Speaking of race documentaries, I watched this one on Emmett Till the other day and it was very good. Worth watching if you hadn't heard his story before. It all happened in 1955. He was a 14 year old black boy from Chicago who was visiting family in the South when he whistled at a white woman. That night, a group of white men showed up at his house and lynched him in an extremely gruesome way. It ended up being a very significant event in the history of the civil rights movement thanks to the dedication of his family, who refused to let his death be in vain.

It should also be noted that the white woman in the case, Carolyn Bryant Donham, just recently admitted that she lied about pretty much everything leading up to the lynching, and only now confessed because she's trying to get paid off a book and everyone else involved is long dead, including Emmett's mother, who never saw a shred of justice in her son's case.

It's hard to believe that it's been almost 16 years and there has still been no definitive documentary about September 11th. At this point I almost feel like Ken Burns is the only documentarian that would capture the scope and magnitude of that day. Maybe I'm wrong.

look at this guy that hasn't heard of Loose Change.

In all seriousness it took a lot longer for Ruby Ridge and the Oklahoma City bombing to get good documentaries made (2017!) so I would imagine we just need some more time to pass before something good gets made.

If you never saw it the film from the two French guys that were profiling a fire department as it happened is _amazing_. It's called 9/11 and is well worth a watch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/11_(film) It's more of a first person as it happens account and less of a comprehensive Ken Burns style doc.

Mommie Dead and Dearest. Holy crap what an amazing doc. On HBO? soon?

TLDR:
- Crazy mom makes her kid (ever since infancy) pretend to be sick with MS, Cancer, kid gets feeding tube surgery, lots of other surgeries.
- Kid has had enough, convinces her freaky BF to kill her mom
- Kid and BF goes to prison.

That's a surprisingly great longform Buzzfeed article about that case too. Had no idea there's a doc about it, I'll have to check it out.

Yeah it's really good and harrowing and a surprisingly coherent account of how things were on the ground that day. I've seen two versions of it though, one that was just flat-out the footage with interviews with the main people involved and another where some actor (can't remember who) kept appearing to state the obvious (in between commercials probably). I much preferred the first version.

I could be completely mis-remembering but I think the actor version might have been the original CBS airing? And then maybe later they removed that?

Either way, while not comprehensive of the years to follow, naturally given how quickly it was done, it is easily the best documentary about the event. That's some extremely harrowing poo poo and I remember my entire family watching it when it aired, just dead silent for like 2 hours.

The craziest thing about Mommy Dead and Dearest is that it's extremely similar to a case from 10 or 15 years ago, to the point where I legitimately wonder if that was intentional. So messed up.

Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape is really good. The sequel is decent too, and I think both are on Shudder at the moment.

I've got 'Best Worst Film' in the queue to watch at some point, and if you have any interest in Nightmare on Elm Street then Never Sleep Again is a super fun watch.

E: "Rewind This" about VHS is decent too.

Will definitely check out Video Nasties. Best Worst Movie is great. I've heard Never Sleep Again is good, I've been meaning to watch it for forever.

And Rewind This is awesome. They should call it "Rewound This." Because when I first rented it I watched it like three times. It was a digital copy though, so I didn't need to, like, rewind it.

Troll 2 is like all of the Leprechaun movies distilled into pcp and then smoked by a crazy italian 5 year-old who made a movie on the same budget you might make to buy a used chevy van. It's the dumbest storyline ever, but it's not really all that necessary to watch because the documentary is more about the people who made it, what they went through, and then how they react to the nationwide movie tour they did. The dentist is such an unremittingly positive and good guy that it really makes a large part of the doc, otherwise it might end up crushingly dark.
