Wire gauge sizes work like that because in the beginning, a number 1 wire was a wire that had been drawn once, a number 2 wire had been drawn a second time (making it slightly narrower), and so on.

Thanks, I didn't know what gauges actually were. That brings me to the question: Why are gauges a thing when you could just refer to a thing's thickness directly?
