Steven? Steven?!
STEEEEEEVEEEEEEEN!
[April 17th, 2020. 8:20 AM]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tHAF3gZ7TY

The first day of school hits you like a truck. Having to wake up earlier than usual to prepare to leave for the train station, having to ride a crowded train, now further crowded again by students all attempting to accomplish the same goal, it's like the first year just looped back on itself. Still, you manage to find your way to a station and onto the train. While approaching the station, you get to hear chatter from students awaiting the train from your same class.

"So this year's going to have a home ec class, right? Who's the teacher for that?"

"Some guy in his thirties, Yukimura-san I think? Really girly-looking."

"I heard he's still a virgin. Makes sense, who'd want to date someone like that at their age?"

"Oh well, at least we get free food out of the deal, hopefully."

Listening in on or ignoring the banter, you find your way onto the train, off the train, and into your homeroom class of 2-C. Your homeroom teacher from last year, a Hakari Aizawa, shuffles her way inside and begins checking her desk and materials for the scant few minutes she has before the clock hits 8:30 and class begins.

From what you recall, Aizawa-san only had one year of high-school level teaching experience prior to becoming your homeroom teacher during your first year at Torabisu High. Her lectures were often interrupted with her papers accidentally getting knocked off the podium, or dropping the chalk mid-sentence. Still, she tries to put on her best smile as she addresses the class this morning, holding a clipboard and a pen.

"G-good morning, class! Welcome back to school, I'm sure you've been looking forward to continuing your education just like I've been looking forward to teaching you all again! Before we start today's lecture, however, I'd like to start with the roll call, as well as passing around this sign-in sheet. If you could pass it amongst yourselves, that would be wonderful."

Lifting up the clip on the clipboard, Aizawa-san removes a stapled two-page document featuring the names of each student and passes it to whomever is closest to her desk/podium. It takes her a bit of effort to get the rest of the documents back under the clip, but once she has it in place, she begins calling for each student's name. You still have a few minutes of free time to talk amongst your fellow classmates or perform other tasks, until class formally begins, assuming you can do them and still answer when your name is called and sign the paper when it heads your way.

Aspect: Exhausted!

Compelling the Night Owl aspect, instantly. Yumiko now has the Exhausted Aspect!

First days of school are such a drag, and the classes are usually just an unimportant introduction. That was the justification Yumiko told herself every time she decided to watch one... more... episode...

She remembered seeing the clock at 03:13 and thinking it looked like a happy mustache-bearing king if she tilted my head to the side on her pillow.

Today was going to be so... Not fun. Yumiko could feel it in my bones.

Oh, great, the homeroom teacher this year was Aizawa-san again! She was too polite to make any remarks about Yumiko's napping in class.

Yumiko put her arms on her desk and rested her head on it, lazily inspecting the other classmates. A lot of people she knew from last year, but some new faces as well. Yumiko was glad to see Seka was in her class again! She was pretty cool to hang out with, and Yumiko was afraid her antics last year would have gotten her suspended, or worse, during the holidays.

And, who else... Urgh, no. Soichi. Soichi. That guy always gave some crazy tryhard vibes, and the way he had a perpetual glare gave Yumiko the creeps. She was glad he mostly kept to himself, but would have been gladder had he been put in another class.

Hah, that nerd was still here as well. What was his name again? Kobamoto? Kobamushi? No, wait, that last one was just his nickname amongst Yumiko's friends outside of class 2-C. Ah, she'd know soon enough with the roll call. Wait, did he sneak a cat into class? Yumiko was definitely certain she saw a cat tail peek out from his bag. Hahaha, that was amazing! She'd have to thank him for making her day when nobody was looking.

Oh, there was a transfer student girl as well! She seemed nice enough, if a bit simple. Yumiko thought it'd be a good idea to give her a warm welcome. You know how people can be in the Big City.

Yumiko leaned towards Seka and whispered: "Good morning! Did you meet the transfer student yet? She seems nice!"

Rumiko was as tense as a bowstring. The holidays mainly consisted of the moving to the city, and getting used to the new life. The small apartment with the thin walls to the neighbors, the ever present noise of the city, even at night, and the smell in the air, all of them were still vaguely alien to her. And of course, her two little brothers being all excited about everything didn't really make her feel better. Felt like she needed a vacation to recover from the vacation.

And now, the first day of school. Of big city high school. She'd been awake near dawn, but that wasn't really unusual. Shower, get dressed, help make breakfast. Mother had to get to work too, so she had to bring Takeda (11) and Hatsuo (9) to their school, having to both navigate the underground system and prevent the two kids from running off to investigate the Big City on their own. Then, after getting them safe to the school gates, she had to travel some more time, in those densely packed, claustrophobic boxes to take her to the station near her school. At least there were none of the gropers she had read so much about. She considered whether to maybe go to school on a bike in the future, but then again, big city traffic looked lethal.

At least some good news she would have heard on the way. Home Economics. That sounded like something she could look forward to. Maybe she could make some stuff from back home, let people taste it. And she'd make a ton of friends and everything would be a lot better and she'd finally feel at home in the city. That would be nice.

Of course, once she was in the school, well on time, it took her some time to find it. The school was much larger than the one back home. She asked for some help here and there from students, and while they had pointed her the right way, she'd heard the giggles and snorts, and the girl that had pointed her the way had been mimicking her accent. Just the sense of humor of the city. It'd be alright. They'd get used to it right? She took one of the free desks in the class, hoping she wasn't doing anything wrong. The teacher at least, seemed kind. The fact that she looked as nervous as Rumiko was... oddly helpful in a way.

She sat at the desk, her uniform neatly pressed, some long stockings worn underneath the skirts for modesty. (gotta be careful with city boys. She hoped the nervousness wasn't too clear on her face. She peered around a bit. She didn't really know anyone here. A lot of the girls looked like, well, they looked like exactly what her parents were worried she'd turn into. Immodest and frivolous girls. Well, she wasn't planning in... acting like that, but she sure hoped to get along with them at least. Or at the very least not getting picked on. She briefly looked over the boys too. They seemed, alright, she guessed? She noticed that one of them, a tall one with blue hair seemed to be given ample space as he walked to his desk. Was he one of the notorious city delinquents? Well, who knew, maybe in the city this was just a sign he was really respected? Some other boy though didn't look intimidating at all. Looked more like a cute lil' fella.

The paper came to her, she nervously signed her name and stood. "I'm Rumiko Tsubasa. Nice to meet all y''all."

Aspect:

Getting up early hadn’t been a problem for Shin, rounding up his brothers and sisters for their first day of school had taken up most of the morning though. Thankfully Mrs Soichi had prepared their lunches the previous evening, so one job less for Shin.

The couple hours of overtime he had had to pull the previous night had left him sore, but in a good mood. Many of his classmates had taken their last day of freedom as permission to horde the fast food joint he was working at that evening, and that always meant some great tips. That was important, now that school was starting up again. There was no way he would be able to juggle school, work and basketball so a few of his jobs would have to lapse. Things would be difficult the next few months, but the Soichi’s would deal.

But still, the team would be meeting up again soon! That would make the entire day worth it. He couldn’t wait to get back into it and start whipping the team back into shape. There were a few mates he could think of that wouldn’t have been serious in their holiday training, and they were going to get a rude awakening at the next week! After all, it would only be a few weeks before their first game. Everyone had to be ready.

Ahhh, but first, school. Aizawa-san was in charge of homeroom this year, that would be fun. Like a little lost puppy, both incredibly curious and incredibly nervous. Speaking of small animals, was that a cat in that guys bag? Who was he, You? Yu? Something like that? Taking a quick look around class, Shin could vaguely recognise most of his classmates except for one girl; built like a brickhouse. Whatever team she joined would be lucky to have her. Looking around to see the rest of his classmates was interesting. Seeing how most of the glares had turned into panicked glances, Shin guessed there were probably a few rumors going around. Only most of them changed though; one girl close to the front seemed as if she was personally offended by Shin's presence. And... oh poo poo was that Mr Kuroda's daughter next to her?

Shin could not afford to piss off the daughter of the boss of the best job he currently had. Looking away quickly, he noticed the signing sheet had conspicuously passed him by as he was looking at the girl. As he was tracked it down, Shin accidentally made eye contact with the guy on the row behind him. Shin gave him he best winning smile, but it probably didn’t help. Oh he got the sheet alright, but the guy didn’t look very happy. Oh well. Signing it and handing it back, he turned back to the front and let conversation start back up around him. Home Ec? Hah, Shin lived Home Ec. What could that class teach him about rounding up 6 squalling infants, getting them fed and ready for bed? He breathed Home Ec. With that in mind, Shin settled back into waiting for class to start, mostly ignoring the whispers and chat going on around him.

Daily Horoscope - April 17th - Taurus
At the moment, you have an awful lot to share. Even if you don't, the look on your face says it all. So why hold it back? Let everyone know what's on your mind. You're not good at holding your tongue anyway, especially when you feel a good air-clearing session is the best solution. Just don't intentionally try to hurt anyone's feelings -- be generous with the kindness and skimp on the sarcasm.

'Time is a cycle'. Yo had ruminated on this phase sometimes in the dark hours of the night when he hadn't been getting much sleep and his thoughts drift in strange direction to cope. Everything repeats, everything comes around again at some point, things happen and later they happen again and then they happen again later. Heading back to school for his first year of being a second year of being in the later year of a high school-year felt oddly familiar, with the same muttered conversations on the train ride, the same people one the way to school, and the same people in the class (With one or two exceptions) and the same homeroom teacher - Yo actually quite liked Ms.Aizawa, she didn't look at him like he was a strange and exotic species for one thing - and everything felt sort of, odd.

Come to think of it every day of Yo Kobayashi's life ever since that thing happened had felt strange and otherworldly, so technically if every day was odd then that was the norm and so it was normal again?

He really needed some coffee.

He watched absentmindedly as the role call made it's way up to him, points of reference that was it, Yo needed points of reference so his slightly fuzzy thoughts could be put back on the track. Questing hands found a pencil which he spun on the desk a few times, following the point. The first spin pointed towards, oh dear, Seka Kuroda, Trouble On Two Legs. Yo for obvious reasons didn't particularly fall into the delinquent crowd, and this one was the delinquent's delinquent, he had heard that the moment she came into the school she ran afoul of the hulk who used to lead those clowns and knocked him out cold. Only a rumour of course, I mean she wasn't expelled for it so probably it was just a made up story and the guy merely face-planted into a wall by accident, but still. She was pretty intense.

Another spin, this one yeah, Shin Soichi, The Point Guard Beast. Torabisu's High School was rumoured to have some pretty good basketball players, and that the team was probably going to the sleeper hit next season. The truth of the matter is that it had a good basketball player, and a bunch of numpties who lived in a constant state of subdued terror and thus tried their hardest to look like good basketball players, because the team captain would drop on them like a sack of bricks if they didn't. Yo never particularly had much interest in sports when it came right down to it, he used to play Baseball when he was younger - before that thing happened - and still kept the bat in his room somewhere, but most of the time he endeavored to be far away from the ball when any mandatory sports were happening.

Around it goes again, Yumiko Harada, Vanilla Princess. Eh she's alright, seems to be at the head of that clique of popular girls that seemed to exist in every single high school campus in the entire world (Maybe they were all created out of a vat? That would explain why they all seemed completely similar to one another.) She never bothered Yo and that was good enough for him, people not bothering him was one of his greatest aspirations in life.

One more spin as the register was on his row and approaching him, it pointed to the person next to him and this one was... Oh. This was a new face. The girl introduced herself as Rumiko Tsubasa and the twang in her voice made something go click in his head. He looked away hurriedly before he was caught staring, it's not polite to stare after all. Afterwards the register came his way, answered the role call, sat back down and relaxed, one hand resting on Tomo.

Oh yeah, that. Technically you weren't supposed to take pets to school but... Well it had started as an accident; he had woken up late one day, stuffed toast into his mouth, grabbed his bag, paid no attention to it's strange heaviness until he'd reached in for a textbook and found a kitten instead, because Tomo could - and would - sleep anywhere she could get to - or into - and got very cantankerous when people tried to move her. It then became a habit, because he never felt wholly comfortable leaving her alone in his room all day whilst he was at work and Mum worked nights so he didn't want to burden her with looking after his pet. No one seems to have noticed anyway, or they did notice and they didn't care. Or they did care but didn't care to say anything because it's not polite.

After a while, with the register reaching the back of the room, he leaned over to their new arrival, now that the attention wasn't on their section. Now how do you start this conversation, 'Hey I'm Yo nice to meet you' perhaps, or 'Hello I'm Kobayashi but most people call me Yo. Or they tell me to 'Sod off', or perhaps 'Sup Transfer Student?' All these were good options that had much to recommend them. What he said instead was.

"So hey, where did you blow in from?"

Ugh. Uuuugh. Uuuuuugghllblblbl. School. Worst.

That had been Seka's thought process for most of the trip to school. She'd shared some perfunctory conversation with her dad over breakfast. The usual stuff. Get good grades. Behave. Don't get into trouble. All of that useless crap that didn't matter. She was probably just going to go into running the business after she left, like Dad wanted, as if good grades meant anything when you ran a crappy fast food joint that only high school kids ate at.

The feelings of frustration had followed her throughout her transit, and she'd not really interacted with anyone as she'd headed to her seat. She was in too much of a bad mood to even do her classic ronin swagger into the room, preferring to just slump down in her seat and hate life. There were a few whispers, of course, but she never cared. Let people think whatever. That rear end in a top hat deserved what he got, anyway.

She spent the time waiting doodling some kaiju in the back of her notebook, and tried to recall who was in her class. Shin, that dude who worked at the fast food joint and was apparently the scariest basketball player in Japan. Eh. She could probably take him in a fight, but she didn't have any reason to and everyone else on the team seemed to like him, so whatever. Working for dad was probably hell enough. There was also Yo, the kid who'd snuck a cat into class as if nobody could hear it meowing. Weirdo. He'd went solidly in the "ignore" pile in the last year, but maybe he might do something this year. Maybe he'd let the cat poop in the teacher's desk. Top pranksssss.

Oh, and of course, her gal pal Yumiko! Seka turned around at her words and was confronted with bloodshot eyes.

"Yumiko? Jeez, you look like you're gonna die. You been on a Netflix binge again? Here." She rummaged in her bag and handed Yumi an energy drink. "Chug that before afternoon classes or you're gonna keel over."

In response to Yumiko's question, she looked over at the country girl. Rumiko? Man, that was confusing. "Her? Dunno. She's from the sticks, isn't she? I'm surprised she didn't get lost on the subway. Guess we'll see what she's like soon."

Her lips curled into a smile. "Names are a little close, huh? How many times d'you reckon Aizawa's gonna get you and her mixed up?"

Class 2-C

Aizawa-san looks on at Rumiko for a moment before visibly flinching with realization. "O-oh! Right! Before we begin, a short announcement! As she just stated, Rumiko-san here is a new transfer student who will be joining class 2-C and will, hopefully, be here for next year as well. Please try to make her feel welcome. Now where is that sign-in sheet..." After having it passed to her by someone at the front desk, she begins looking it over. "Eighteen, nineteen...Okay! We've got everyone here and accounted for! Good. After today, roll call and keeping track of those in or not in attendance will be your responsibilities. Moving on to today's lecture..."

The lecture proper begins. It mostly describes what courses will be the focus of this semester. As expected, History is continuing, as are English and Algebra, nothing especially interesting until she mentions Home Economics, special if only because for once you'll have to go to Yukimura-san yourselves instead of him giving the lecture from this classroom. The classroom chatter is on point as always with remarks.

"Did you see her face bleach when she forgot the new transfer student? Wish I'd snapped a pic of it."

"What are they feeding folks in the countryside to build them like that?"

"Speaking of food, how much you wanna bet the school's gonna catch fire from someone bombing cooking class?"

"I got 2000 yen on the fire alarm going off this first week."

"You're on."

The "first day of the school year" spiel continues with Aizawa-san writing, erasing, and more legibly rewriting the curriculum for your courses this year, the date of your first exam week, and a reminder about academic honesty and how you will absolutely be flunked if you are caught cheating, "so please don't cheat, especially not during my portions of class." After all of that is said and done, with how little there is to do today, time flies by and before you know it, you've survived your first day of class as the clock hits 3 PM. Some folks stick around to chat with their classmates, some leave to try to find if any clubs are opened up or are recruiting, and some, like Aizawa-san, leave rather quickly with the intent of rushing straight home (or the teacher's lounge, in her case). What you lot do, on the other hand, is up in the air.

This app. This drat app. It came on last night and wouldn't uninstall itself. But it kinda just appeared to be a game. A creepy, weird game. Hopefully it wasn't a virus that was trying to take her money. Then again, most mobile games were just trying to take your money anyway.

Ugh. Maybe she should just head to the mall instead. Do some retail therapy. Better than risking booting up this thing...

At the gates, she saw Seka staring at her phone. "Oh, hi Seka! Do you want to walk home tog-"

OMG! She had the thing! The weird app thingymabob!

"Oh! Seka, you play that game too?" Yumiko reached for her own phone to demonstrate, excitedly, that she was the proud and somewhat confused owner of the exact same software. "Look at how cute my character is!"
Unfortunately, as always, there was not much to see or do on the screen. Yumiko tapped a few icons at random and said: "No idea how you actually play this, though. I tried to uninstall it but my phone gives me an error. Is this, like, a virus or something?"

After fumbling around with it enough, Yumiko finally found the gesture that opened more options: swiping up from the bottom of the screen pulls up a menu, listing options such as "Party", "Equipment", "Items", and "Enter Otherworld". Party, when interacted with, displays Yumiko and a pending party invite sent to Seka respectively with a fancy side profile of their character's faces and two bars for "HP" and "SP". Equipment shows that you have...apparently nothing but your current costumes equipped, for the moment. Item brings up an error message stating "your Otherworld inventory is empty." With the day done with, Shin now had a few blessed hours of freedom before the start of his shift. Limitless possibilities are awaited him. Maybe he could go for a run. Or meet up with the guys? Or meet up with the guys and cajole them into a run!

Shin thought about it, but decided against it. This was a chance for them to prove themselves. Tomorrow, when the team met back up, would be running day. He would see then who had been serious with their training. That still left him the whole afternoon though. Unused to such free time, he really hadn't thought ahead to what to do with it. There was that weird game on his phone. But there was also another possibility...

Catching up with the new girl wasn't hard, what with how easily she stood out of the crowd. Marching up to her, Shin gave her a quick wave. It would probably be a waste, but it didn't hurt to try.

"Oh, I'm from Shikoku, born and bred." She'd have answered to Yuu, but she didn't want to get in trouble with the teacher, so she'd keep herself from engaging in a lot more conversation. She paid close attention to the first class, not wanting to miss any information and have to look more out of place than she wanted to be. The mentioning of Home Economics made her smile though. She definitely looked forward to that one. Of course, she did hear the whispers from people, and her cheeks reddened in embarrassment, fists clenching.

At the end of the day, she sighed. Well, there had been some looks. Some chuckling, but all in all, things weren't too bad. Then, the tall guy came up to her, with a wave. It was friendly enough. "Oh, eh, hey Soichi-Kun. Ah yes. My ol' school had an archery club. Mostly just an ol' shed with an old teacher and some bows, but it was good times. Wasn't a bad shot myself. Heard this place got an archery club too, so I was lookin' to give it a look."

I got a response and didn't get outright rejected on my initial greeting? Yes! I have successfully made a normal human interaction. But whilst academic circumstances prevented any immediate follow up conversations, we have a foothold to actually make a new friend here Yo, don't mess it up.

As the itinerary for the following year was rolled out in front of him, Yo made some mental notes. English, algebra are the unassuming subjects that everyone has to do by default, all normal grist to the school mill and stuff Yo didn't pay too much mind to because he was fairly decent at it, and could reliably place high on any grading board without too much exam pressure. Home Economics was one subject that made him raise an eyebrow, a bit out there as far as classes went here's hoping no one sets fire to the school kitchens again like they did last year. Or that they didn't all end up with chronic food poisoning like they did that other time.

All of this was background noise, because he already knew where he was going. He was firmly in the history buff bus, and that was Yo Kobayashi's interests layed out in full, ghosts, photography and history in all it's nitty grittiy details, weird circumstances and he was all over that like white on rice. He could live and breath history, well technically everyone lived and breathed history, if there was no history from then to right now then now wouldn't exist would it?

The day continued without incident.

---

Yo Kobayashi at the end of the school day had very specific plans he had made the day before. He didn't apply to any clubs, because he was already a member of the Photography Club from the day he first arrived at Torabisu and showed the president Toshi Moto his portfolio of more acceptable images and was instantly press-ganged into the club on the spot. So all he really had to do was go to the club room, stick his head inside and go.

"Hey Toshi-san can I reapply for the club this year?"
"Yep."
"Okay cool, see you Monday."

And he didn't hang around to talk to anyone at school because, he didn't have anyone he could talk to a lot of the time for one thing. No he knew what he was going to do, and it was all to do with the mysterious app that had appeared on his phone the day before. It smelled like a good mystery worth investigating to the fullest and no one sniffed out mysteries quite like Yo Kobayashi Ghost Hunter and Urban Exploration Ghost Photographer And Other Similar Things™. And if it turned out to be just a virus and he had completly wasted his time then that was probably the least terrible thing that could happen to him on this excursion and that was fine.

And this is why Yo was standing in front of an abandoned convenience store 30 minutes or so later - which the app had labeled as a deep shade of purple - with the determined look on his face of someone who is about to trespass on private property for the sake of satisfying his rampant curiosity.

He checked the app again to make sure he was in the right spot.

“Cool.” And it was. There weren't many people at school who could stomach a protracted conversation with Shin. Fewer still who had relatively similar interests. "Never was much for archery myself. Found my passion early on. There are a few other teams as well; for the boys we got two types of b-ball; base and basket. But hell, you ever feel like shooting a few hoops, no prob. No one will give you any trouble, or they won’t if the know what’s good for them. We’ve also got a girls tennis and volleyball team, if you’re interested in that sort of thing as well. As for the archery club, want me to show you the way quick so you can have a look in?”

Hah, ain't too proper for a gal to be jumpin' along with a bunch of guys like that eh? But maybe I'll come an' watch, if I've got the time. Got to help out the parents a bit. But I do like archery. Entering The Otherworld

Having accepted Seka into the party, and the "OK" button pressed, an animation begins to overtake the phone's display, as it finally begins having audio. In a female voice, it states "Entering the world of false identities." In a far more warped voice, it exclaims "SHOW ME YOUR TRUE FACE!" Elsewhere, Yo has figured out the menu navigation and began his own descent along the same things.

The world around you, similarly, begins turning black and red and the overlay seems to cover everything for a while, as things begin to shift and warp wildly. The school's stone steps and gate become made of cold steel and lose their coat of paint, as the world itself seems to take on the form of something resembling out of a sci-fi movie. Day becomes night not due to passage of time but through sheer amount of cloud cover, neon advertisements and lights cover every corner, parked cars either become sleeker or rustbuckets, and a light layer of fog keeps the horizon from being too clear.

Those who have entered the game also find that their appearances have changed, taking on the likenesses of their digital avatars. The outfit seems to fit you like a glove, although you distinctly notice that pretty much everything bar the phone you used to enter this location with, and in Yo's case, Tomo, are all that seem to be on your person. A glance at the phone indicates that you seem to be at the same location you were at prior to entering this strange world, at least, relative to the map. There's a new icon on the display of each phone, as well; a series of shadowy silhouettes in the corner, each with a differing number of small footstep icons underneath them. Yo's abandoned convenience store, upon a proper look at it with their eyes rather than the phone, seems to be open for business. The school, meanwhile, seems to be attempting to, albeit very slowly, close its gates.

Seka looks down in surprise at her costume - a weird punk-ish number she'd picked whilst fiddling with the character outfitter. She looks up at the metallic, looming replica of the school, the cloud cover and the swarm of neon lights.

"Yumi?" Shock and fear have entered her voice. "This doesn't look like a party. In fact, I'd guess this isn't a party at all. There's, uh, a distinct lack of red cups."

She watched the school gates slowly grind towards their closed position with wide eyes.

Yumiko stared at the transforming school and street in silence. Then, seeing Seka's bizarre outfit, she looked down.

Her outfit was a cross between a sailor fuku and a vocaloid outfit. A neon cyan skirt contrasted nicely with her black shirt, which had a few more neon finishes. A headset had appeared on her head, as well.

Yumiko cautiously bent the small microphone away from her mouth and said: "Um, you're right. There's a distinct lack of music and atmosphere here."

The two of them made their way to the school, mostly in silence, except for the occasional direction where important rooms were. Rumiko tried to pay close attention to where they were walking, rather than just blabbing more, and it seemed to fit Shin fine. Of course, it did mean that she noticed that half the students they walked past rubbernecked when they walked, and they left a trail of whispering and giggling students in their wake. Her cheeks flushed a bit, but she tried to pretend she didn't notice. She didn't want to embarrass Shin. Finally, they came to a building a bit separated from the rest of the school. The doors were a fair bit sturdier than most. She assumed you didn't want to give students to easy access to the bows and arrows there. When they entered, the conversation inside died as everyone looked at the tall man enter, looking at eachother.

Rumiko herself decided to break the silence. "Eh, howdy everyone. I'm Rumiko Tsubasa, a new transfer student. I was thinkin' of joinin' the archery club? Shin-Kun here was helpin' me find it." The last part was said in an almost challenging tone. She was getting a bit sick of folks acting like she showed up with a yakuza or something. She noticed one bespectacled boy run towards the far end, where a slightly older girl, who seemed to ignore the commotion, was taking deep breaths as she held the arrow ready. The bespectacled boy seemed hurried, but still waited, until finally the archer released and sent the arrow flying, hitting the bullseye.

"What is it, Samato-kun." She said. He just pointed towards the two newcomers. "Ah, I see. It is rare we have the pleasure to see the captain of the basketball team here, Shin-Kun. And I have not made the acquaintance of your fellow?"

Rumiko smiled brightly, finally someone who was polite to him. She made a small bow. "Hi there, Nice to meetcha. Sorry to interrupt you while you're practicin', but I just arrived at school. In my old school I also did kyudo, an' I want to continue doin' it."

There was a moment of silence as some of the other students seemed taken aback at the greeting, but the other student just made a polite bow back. "Very nice to meet you, Tsubasa-san. I am Enomoto Katsuko, captain of the Archery club. I'm always happy to have people with experience from another school. It is an opportunity to further develop our practice."

Rumiko grinned. "Hah, thanks. It was a lot smaller than here, but I'm real glad to be able to continue to do some things like before. So when does the club meet?" There were some whispers again as that didn't seem to be the expected reaction. Katsuko showed her around a bit, and gave her the basic information, then excused herself to return to class activities, giving Shin a polite nod.

Yumiko sucked air through her teeth. Going home... Now?

The street looked far too shady and grim to just stand around. And Yumiko was quite honestly afraid of what lurked around the corner, in that dark, foggy downtown.

"Um, but like, what if it asks us to stand where we came in again? Before it lets us out? We'd have to walk all the way back! Also, can we even catch a train now? It's a thirty minute walk to my home!"

Yumiko shuffled around anxiously, then said: "Standing at the gate here gives me the creeps. But I can see lights at our school. Maybe we can wait there for the end of the cooldown on this stupid 'quit' button?"

When Yo had picked out his outfit for his in-game avatar, he went through a few steps for something he thought would be practical
"Well it might rain in the game, so how about a big raincoat?"
"Can't go wrong with some good hard wearing shoes either."
"Gloves? Why not nothing wrong with a pair of gloves in the cold."
"And, why not these cool glowing eye accessories, that could be something neat."

The resulting practical outfit was done in shades of red and black, colours that were very workman like and had much to recommend them. No part of this outfit was particularly outlandish or spooky looking. It was just that when it all came together in game...

Yeah. When the portal had opened up and sucked Yo into the virtual world, there were quite a few emotions that could be appropriate to the situation at hand of something clearly supernatural going on. Excitement normally wasn't one of them.

"Hah! I knew it was going to be something like this! I was expecting more aliens though." He reached for his camera, which wasn't on his person. There was that pause a man gets when he has done something on muscle memory for years, but then completely blanks out when he suddenly has to think about it. Kind of like learning how to tie your shoe laces, and then one day forgetting.

The pats continued on the rest of his person. It didn't turn up a camera; or his wallet, or his housekeys, or anything other then his phone and his cat. His cat that, should be on his person. The little pitter-patter of paws on pavement drew his attention. Tomo, having be roused from her slumber and curious of the strange new smells emanating from the convenience store opposite, had hopped down from her owner's bag when he wasn't looking and was trotting towards the clearly mysterious and worrying looking convinience store without a care in the world.

"Awww Tomo! Come back here!" Pursuing his wayward kitten, Yo entered the convenience store.

The walk through the halls was pleasant enough, although Shin was struck by an odd sense of disapproval part way through. Almost as if one of his younger siblings was getting themselves into trouble… But it wasn’t his problem. Right now he was busy lending a hand to Rumiko. It was a companionable silence, spoiled by the judging stares and childish giggling from the rest of the school. Assholes. For a moment Shin felt slightly guilty; would trying to be nice by lending a hand inadvertently make things worse for the transfer student? But soon they arrived at the archery club and it stopped mattering for the moment. With a quick “Hey there” and his best attempt at a disarming smile, Shin settled in while Captain Katsuko walked Rumiko about the place. While archery wasn’t quite his bag, Shin could appreciate skill and motivation, both of which Katsuko had in spades. With Rumiko fully introduced to the in’s and out’s of the club, the pair were released back into the hallway. At this point most of the other students had left or entered their clubrooms, leaving Shin and Rumiko most of the hall to themselves.

“Well, that’s that.” Shin started. “I’m probably not the one to ask about other things around here. As you’ve probably guessed I’m a bit single minded.” He laughed it off before continuing. “But if there’s anything else, feel free to ask. Hell, I can give a tour if you like. I ain’t got anything to do until my shift at work starts later on. You won’t be interrupting anything except for a bit of playing on my phone.” Almost without thinking Shin pulls out his phone, a model several years out of date but still in working condition, to show Rumiko the strange app. “I play a lot of these crappy little games inbetween important stuff, or if I’m trying to stay awake at work or whatever. Don’t remember downloading this one, but heh, free’s free.”

Small Conveniences

Yo chases his cat into the konbini, which, at first glance, seems pretty normal, carrying a smaller than usual variety of items. On second glance, however, things seem a bit off. There are items such as "forget-me-nots," "cancer sticks," and "sweet nothings" in place of most of the usual items. A voice calls out to the new arrival. It's a bit distorted and a bit rough, but it seems to be saying "Hey, pets aren't allowed in here. Eh, gently caress it, nobody who cares comes by anyway. Come on in."

A vaguely humanoid shape wearing a full cloak, or was, actually standing up straight looking at Yo, but goes back to slumping over and leaning on their shoulder over the counter. In a very jaded and sarcastic tone, it continues. "So, what are you looking for? Don't think I've seen your face around here. Doesn't matter, though. The world is poo poo as always, and we here at Small Conveniences specialize in all the worthless poo poo you know won't solve your problems, but'll make you forget you have them for a little bit, and really, isn't ignorance bliss?"

It's at this point that this very obvious drug store is connected to the abandoned convenience store he was skulking about. The original manager of this establishment, or at least its equivalent in the real world, seemed to be on something pretty much 24/7, and was rumored to sell certain substances over the counter for anyone who asked for them. When the jig was up and the police came knocking with a search warrant, said owner had, supposedly, tried to down their stash with the intent of ejecting it from their systems once the heat was off. Instead, they ended up ODing and the place was closed down, with no one wanting to buy it. The owner's long since passed, though, so who is this person?

The Educational System

As Seka and Yumiko enter the school itself, it's safe to say this is at least, in some way still something related to education. The lockers are still there, albeit under built-in combination lock, and the structure at least at first looks similar, with the entry hall and the stairs, albeit everything being far more 'secure' in that more things are locked and barred. The front desk is abandoned at the moment, with a sign reading "OUT FOR TODAY, THANK CHRIST." The peg board usually reserved for announcements or club invitations instead seems to hold gossip, most of which folks like Yumiko or Seka would already know about, albeit including a few rumors like the one heard at the train station earlier that day.

Rumiko and Soichi find themselves transported into the same building under the same circumstances as Seka and Yumiko, albeit on the practice building. Their clothing changed, anything not personally held seemingly vanishing into their Inventory, and moreover, there's a great deal more chrome everywhere. The archery club's room sign now reads "Archery Club. Now accepting chumps like you who wanted a gun but couldn't get one." Meanwhile similar derogatory statements are on the other club door rooms, and the general atmosphere seems to take on one of mockery.

The PA system comes on for a moment, blasting out in a garbled voice audible to all four within the region. "Will Hakari Aizawa please report to the teacher's lounge? I repeat, will Hakari Aizawa kindly move to the teacher's lounge for more mockery? Thank you."

Any further exploration, however, is interrupted by the sounds of clomping footsteps on both ends. A quick scan down the hall seems to come up with...things that are distinctly not human. For Seka and Yumiko, this comes in the form of a very tall, very red human-shaped but definitely not human sized individual with a horn on their head. Rumiko and Soichi, on the other hand, spot a pack of green, equine-like creatures. In addition, the phone app seems to have a meter with an ! on it rising now that said creatures are within the range of its map. What this means is yet unknown, though one can easily take a guess given their inhuman nature.

Yo picked up Tomo as his thoughts ran together on this situation. 'Now let's see I know this place has been closed down for years and its last owner is inhabiting his own coffin in the local cemetery, so this is clearly somewhere that resides in this... This Other World let's call it for now. So this person is probably not an NPC but an actual living thing and this is an actual store, in the Other World.' Allowing Tomo to nestle into his roomy coat, he turned to the store owner. 'This is probably not a simulation because unless something amazing happened to technology in the last few years I am pretty sure fully immersive virtual reality from a smartphone app is a long, long way off. Now the question is how do I play this?'

He settled for pretending to be really stupid, with a big stupid grin, and asking big stupid question.

"Afternoon sir, I'm a completely gormless tourist who just got off the bus and I am completely lost without a map."

"Where is this place exactly? Not, like this store you just told me where it is but, here" He said, making sweeping gestures to the 'outside' world. "I don't suppose you accept Yen as a currency do you?"

Briefly, Rumiko was looking too much at the app to really notice the world changing around her. In fact, the first thing she noticed where her own clothes. Leather wrapped tightly around her, the soft indoor shoes replaced by practical heavy boots. The robe she had picked to cover the tight armor hung over her arms. Something pressed on her face, and she could only assume it was the Kabuki mask she'd picked.

"What on earth. Is this... Is this some kind of prank?" She knows it's ridiculous as she says it, but her mind isn't really coming up with any non-ridiculous options. Then, the... horse like... things show up. She backs away. "This... this isn't funny." She said, backing away towards the door of the archery club. "We... gotta get out of here."

Shin whirled around in a panic, gripping and ripping the thing off of his face and throwing it to the side. In slowly reducing terror, he began to notice the extent of the transformation. His uniform had been warped into some unholy amalgamation of of leather and metal that might have been sleek if it hadn’t apparently been in use for over a hundred years. The thing that had suddenly appeared on his face was not some hand come to choke him, but a dusty and dented helmet. In a fit of pique, he brushed a hand through his hair; mostly unmolested.

“Yo, you oka…” He began, whirling around to find Rumiko in a similar situation. ”What the fuuuuck” he whispered softly to himself before realising something important. “Rumiko, when you were messing with the game earlier, that’s what you picked for your avatar, right? I think this is the same thing I chose.” He quickly picked up the discarded helmet and twirled it in his hands. That was when the PA system blasted It’s odd message. All to quickly, the app displayed it’s apparent warning light and the strange, horse like figures emerged at the end of the hall. They only had a few seconds.

“Rumiko. When we start running, I’m going to go for the shortest route to the front entrance. Don’t stop for anything.” He took a deep breath, made sure Rumiko was doing the same, then in a harsh voice grunted out “GO” turning on his heel.

Small Conveniences

The one in the cloak seems to narrow their eyes at you. "What, you don't know what the deal is? What the hell kind of Shadow are you, anyway?" They seem to start scanning you up and down for a moment, their hand slowwwwly reaching towards what one can assume is either a panic button or the local crime deterrent. However, a few seconds later, he seems to have gotten all the information he needs, and shrugs. You have the very distinct feeling that your choice of outfit helped in the matter. "Ah, I get it. You just got made, didn't you? Well, whatever, I guess I'll give you the short version of the rundown. You're on the other side of the mirror, what the fleshies on the other side think they see when they go someplace. There's more but gently caress it, I'm not getting paid enough for this, or at all really. Speaking of which, yen's fine by me."

The Educational System

Seka and Yumiko rush themselves into the nearest open door they can shut themselves behind. While they're certainly fast enough to get there before their potential threat could see them, their momentum resulted in the door slamming shut behind them. In addition, the small room full of cleaning supplies reeks of a recently overturned bucket of mop fluid, leaving an ammonia-like scent and a puddle directly pouring outside of the doorway, as if their presence there wasn't obvious enough. The good news is, they can lock the door from the inside, for however long that helps.

Shin and Rumiko, on the other hand, attempt to blitz past the stampede-in-the-making in the halls, and do so, but not without getting their attention. The good news is, horses are exceedingly bad at climbing up or down stairs, and so they crash down while they attempt to chase, costing them several seconds. Continuing down and across towards the center, the two pass by a large red demon with a horn on it moving over to investigate a janitor's closet. It is facing away from the two of them, however, and freedom is in sight.
