Turn up the heat: National Zoo’s giant panda Mei Xiang ready to breed

quote:

WASHINGTON — The National Zoo’s giant panda Mei Xiang appears to be in heat, and zookeepers are making preparations for the small window of opportunity they have to get her pregnant.

Female giant pandas are able to conceive for barely 36 hours each year in the spring, usually some time between the months of March through May, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Once the pandas are ready, zoo staff want to give Mei Xiang and the zoo’s resident male panda, Tian Tian, a chance to breed naturally.

“The pandas haven’t successfully bred in the past, but we still give them the opportunity,” Laurie Thompson, assistant curator of giant pandas, said in a news release.

Scientists also plan to artificially inseminate Mei Xiang with Tian Tian’s semen, she said.

If you live in and around D.C., the National Zoo pandas having sex and making babies is more important than elections, protests, impeachment, or the (horrible) Redskins.

Pandas are almost shockingly bad at reproducing, which I think is a big part of why they are endangered. That there's a chance in hell that the World's Biggest, Cuddliest Endangered Species might actually gently caress for goddamn once is arguably important, and at the very least potentially adorable. It's probably a rare bright spot in what I imagine is the neverending hell of living in DC.

I thought the problem with pandas in captivity was that the conditions don't match their natural habitat or something, not that pandas are inherently poo poo at not dying out.

AFAIK, that 36 hours once a year thing is true even in the wild. Captivity just makes the pandas lose interest in mating generally.

I remember reading something like pandas only get horny if a bunch of males chase a female up a tree and trap her until she's tired or something which is hard to reproduce naturally in a captive setting

Can't they just "milk" the male panda and then artificially inseminate the female?

Sunflower seed shells have made their way into the construction trade in the form of Dakota Burl, a natural-fiber wood paneling made from discarded sunflower shells. The wood panels feature a swirled mixture of light and dark colors -- the same colors commonly found in a sunflower shell.

Sunflower seed shells are allelopathic, which means that they produce a chemical that inhibits the growth of other plants. This property makes sunflower seed shells well-suited for use as mulch in gardens and flower beds because of their ability to suppress weeds.

With a heat value of 19.2 megajoules per kilogram, sunflower seed shells are commonly used as a fuel source. Burn the hulls by themselves or pressed into fuel logs with other wood waste products.

The problem with Pandas, in general, is that the microbes in their gut haven't changed or adapted to eating plants, it's still optimized to eat meat. So they're eating bamboo for 14 hours a day just to have enough energy to carry out basic functions..like eating bamboo for 14 hours a day, and very little energy is left for mating.

Is there any research into why it is that pandas exclusively eat bamboo? Like, there's gotta be a good variety of food to go at where they are, but instead they just eat a shitload of plants every day.

It's probably because it's really crap food and nothing else evolved to eat it. Pandas only barely evolved to do it. Basically Pandas are the only animal crap enough to consider fully grown bamboo to be food. The shoots are good and we humans eat those, but the rest is kind of useless as an edible.

Man Wins Desperate Struggle to Free Penis From Toilet Python

It was less than a good morning for Atthaporn Boonmakchuay today. Not after a python slithered out of his squat toilet, bit his penis and refused to let go.

Atthaporn, who just regained consciousness, spoke from his hospital bed Wednesday afternoon to recount the ordeal he experienced in the bathroom of his home east of Bangkok in Chachoengsao province, which he’d entered for his morning routine of a shower and protracted bowel movement.

Atthaporn said he had just squatted over his toilet for his usual 30 minutes of morning business, according to Khon Khao Bang Pakong, when the python rose from the depths to fasten its jaws around the end of his penis.
