The only part of Sigma that confused me is when the Laevatein is first introduced, it looks like the villains have captured it when it is first revealed before it even gets to Sousuke, but then later Wraith delivers it to Sousuke anyway. I feel like I reread those handful of chapters like 3 times because the timeline of why that happened made no sense to me.

Sigma also has some weird pacing issues, especially towards the end. I really appreciate that they do a nice long comedy flashback arc right when things are getting super hosed up though. Especially since We had just had the third loving 'Chidori is about to be saved, whoops nevermind' sequence. I mean it was the best and most plot relevant one, and paid off well, but goddamn. Also Weber really should have stayed dead. It really undercut a lot of the themes about accepting it and moving on, especially since we let Al and Sousuke get a happy ending. Also there are far too many people who get shot right in the head, on screen, in that series who turn out okay. I feel like someone should have veto'd/revoked that story beat because it happens like five times. Zore fucked around with this message at 22:25 on May 10, 2017 |

I finished Macross 7 today. I know people say its a little too long as is, but dammit I found myself still wanting a little more even after finishing the dope OVA about the whales.

Macross 7 goes on way too long, but all that time you spend with the characters ends up making you really like them and care about them. I love the Macross 7 OVAs because they give you more time with those characters but without making you sit through Planet Dance or "Anima Spiritia! eeeeeeeeeeeee" again. Macross 7 is kinda like the opposite of Macross Delta

Macross Delta was also far too long for the story material they had, though unlike Macross 7 it also failed to make me give a poo poo about any of the characters. Hayate is possibly the most unlikeable lead in the franchise.

For all its issues, Macross 7 actually has a very solid endgame set of episodes. Delta hits a high around halfway and then gradually peters out the rest of the way. And yeah I was never a Basara fan but Hayate makes me appreciate him as a MC so much more. God that show was a bummer.

Delta has a really strong first episode. Maybe the best in the franchise, though I'm a big fan of SDFs as well. The next few episodes are pretty great too, but by episode 6 I think the show had started to flag and while it revived briefly around the midway point, even those episodes were cool but had problems. I still can't fathom why the show had Hayate successfully shoot down Keith only 2 episodes after Messer died. The character hadn't done anything to earn it by that point, nor had the show done anything dramatic to capitalize on the event. It's just a really weird resolution, that doesn't actually resolve anything for anyone involved. The fact he shot him down because of a magic boost just seemed really limp and stood out even when the episode aired. The next few episodes were mostly kind of dull, and by episode 20 I'd completely lost interest in the show despite loving the first episode so much. I still haven't finished it, and doubt I ever will. The premise of tactical idols, break-dancing VFs and combat singing was just so well executed in the first episode and the show really did nothing to capitalize on any of it. The idols barely interact with a battlefield after the first episode, the drones disappear after a few episodes, Hayate does the Immelman dance maybe twice more in the following episodes and then just forgets about it and so on. It really feels like someone higher up saw the episodes negative comments online and in trying to appease the people with a negative perception ditched everything that had garnered the idea positive reception and ended up pleasing no-one.

Does anyone have a screenshot of someone saying, like, "Doctor Hell is a respected scientist" or something? I remember seeing something along those lines and I found it hilarious.

He's such an astonishingly broken individual. Each of the 70's super robot shows have their own set of cackling villains, but none match Dr. Hell in simultaneously being monstrous and completely pitiful.

Sorry for the double post, but the first chapter of recent manga Mazinger Z: Alter Ignition is basically nothing but panels of respected scientist Dr. Hell. Here's a handful:

There's 2 of them, actually. The one pictured is a retelling of the original story changed up a bit and the other is one Shwartzwald's talking about. Interval Peace is written by the screenwriter for the new Mazinger Z movie due out eventually.

I just finished Majestic Prince last night and I really enjoyed it, but I could seriously do without the whole "guess the genitals" plot for Ange. I'm glad it didn't last long, but I'd really hope that by 2110 the students of an elite military school could have some goddamn decorum. I'm just sort of making my way through Crunchyroll's "mecha" category right now. I feel like they haven't updated the genre listings in years, though; there's like thirty shows in it and I know for a fact that like half their Gundam series aren't on the list.

There's also episode 25 (which is mostly introductions for super minor movie characters) and the movie; dunno if either are on CR.

It's a pain to find old stuff in general on Crunchy, you basically have to hear about it from other sources if it's a show that's not very popular and predates simulcasts.

Kids and teens, no matter how prestigious their surroundings aren't known for their decorum in general. I thought their curiosity about Ange was both understandable and relatively well handled. The guys were curious, tried to find out a few times through dumbass plans like seeing how Ange reacted to porn and then dropped it as unimportant. I would still prefer Ange's androgyny not have been a thing personally, but I don't have a problem with the way the show handled it given that it was. I think Majestic Prince had a knack for handling things in a quiet and unassuming but impressive way. The best example to me being the cold open of the coffin of the Team Doberhound guy. No crying, no recriminations or guilt, no real sound at all - just a minute or two of some people looking at his coffin and silently grieving the loss of their teammate. It showed a maturity of direction and trust in the audience's ability to grasp the character's feelings and reactions that's often missing. Majestic Prince wasn't an amazing show by any stretch, but I liked the cast and more than that liked how cliche melodrama was introduced and then just brushed off in a more grounded and straight forward manner through out the show.

I mostly watch stuff on Android TV and if you add a show to your queue it has to reload the entire alphabetical list. Weirdly, if you just back out, it's fine and you can pick up scrolling where you left off. I was going to watch Linebarrels of Iron next but I did an episode of that and I don't think I'll be going back unless someone can convince me it gets way better. I think I'm gonna watch Gasaraki next, because being moderately confused really beats hating everything that's going on.

You can check out the Linebarrels of Iron manga if the anime wasn't to your taste. At least, that's what I was told when I also very quickly dropped the anime. I found the manga more palatable but I kind of lost track after the time skip. As a side note, I was mildly annoyed when I found out that one of the genuinely nice characters in the manga was turned into a villain for the anime.

Stick with it only if you desperately need to finish the show.
