Also because they're almost all below BR 5, with a number around or below 2. You can play through most of the tree without ever getting into the crappy tiers. It's like Japanese tanks, but for planes. Now we just need tanks to go with these and things will be perfect.

I'd love to play this game again, but I literally have no idea what the hell is going on when I load up my old account now. Last time I played this, gaijin had decided that credits or whatever they are called was flowing too freely. So income was nerfed into such a giant hole, people were left playing their starter planes in the hopes of making money. I think even premium planes stopped giving out after time because there was some kind of drop off on returns after so many battles. This was several years ago. Also, there was just a simple move down the tree like World of *. This left hilarious things like bad matchmaking giving t6s and 7s the chance to fight the t9/10 jet aircraft. American 50cal was horrible to put it kindly as well.

I hear bomber rushing is still a thing in arcade though. I remember participating in that as the meta was just getting started (their first fix was upping the armoring on the pillboxes iirc). TU-4s just level bombing everything since they got the bonus of spawning super high up already.

The tiering system you describe was killed off about 5 years ago. There's only 5 tiers now and matchmaking is based on Battle Rating of aircraft which is completely disconnected from the tier system. The old WoT model was scrapped and you can still earn plenty of silvers playing low tiers. No vehicle ever stops paying out lions or research points, instead vehicles have optimal tiers for researching new ones now.

e: I actually find bomber spam to be worse in RB these days as bombers actively gimp your team, whereas bombers in AB are big RP pinatas now and they can always come back in a fighter after they get shot down.

Here you go Azran.
There are a load of different ammo types in Tanks, and it can be pretty confusing for a new player. There’s loads of different shells, and they aren’t really explained super well. The most common question is “Which one is the best?” and the answer is “It depends”. However, if you are just getting started, the guns reload quickly enough that you basically can’t go wrong. If you have any doubts, just ask the thread. For a new player, I recommend the german tanks. The Panzer 4 F2 is a 3.3 battle rating tank that is a very good all-rounder with a crazy good gun, and is excellent for learning the game. I heavily recommend researching it ASAP

Shell types are split into 3 different categories by the community: Solid shot, APHE, and HE. I’ll start with what is generally considered the best, APHE.

APHE stands for Armour Piercing High Explosive. Generally, the icon for these types of shells will be a grey bullet with an orange explosion. The names a little misused by players, and typically refers to any AP shell that contains explosive filler. Basically, these shells will penetrate tanks armour; continue flying through, and explode inside. It’s always incredibly important to always shoot where crew members are, but APHE will give you a lot of leeway. It’s extremely common for an APHE shell detonating in a turret to kill the driver, up the front of the tank. You’ll use these shells the most as Russians, Germans and the Japanese. The Panzer 4 I mentioned before gets access to these shells.

Solid Shot: It’s in the name, refers to any shot that is just a solid lump of metal. There are 3 types of solid shot:
AP, APC, APCBC. These are the most common types of solid shot. They are just OK, they typically have a bit more penetration than their APHE counterparts, but they don’t explode. This means you need to be extra careful when aiming.
AP stands for Armour Piercing, C for Capped, and BC for Ballistic Cap. The capped versions of the shells have softer tips, which let them penetrate angled (relative to you) armour much more efficiently. If your tank has these shells (IE Brit tanks), use the one with the most penetration.
Some German tanks have APC shells with explosive filler. These shells are more like APHE shells in that they’ll explode inside the tank. You can tell by the orange explosion in the shell icon.

APDS: You won’t be seeing this shell type as a new player, it’s only on later tanks. It is far and away the best solid shot shell you’ll see until the very end of the tree. Not only does it have massive penetration, it also creates a huge amount of shrapnel flying around the tank. It’s very good. APDS stands for Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot. Basically, the shell is a tiny little dart with a surrounding that stops gasses just rushing past it as its shot up the barrel. These fall away when the round exits. These things are fast as gently caress.

APCR: :siren:APCR is crap.:siren: Don’t be fooled by its high penetration values. You almost never want APCR loaded, and it’s pretty much always best to avoid the tanks that force you to use it. These rounds generate almost no shrapnel inside a tank, so it’s extremely easy to miss important crew members by an inch, and then die while you reload. The only time you want to use this shell is against really thick flat armour, and only if the tank isn’t angled relative to you. If you find yourself struggling to penetrate, look for HEAT ammo, and if your tank doesn’t have it, take a 3-4 APCR as a backup. APCR stands for Armour Piercing Composite Rigid, and is like firing a rifle bullet with cannon sized cartridges. Fast, but it does no damage.

HE. HE stands for High Explosive. There are 2 main types you will run into. These shells will have yellow icons, or a big red arrow for HEAT
Pure HE: You want to take a few of these shells. Literally lobs a big ball of explosives at your enemy. It’s incredibly effective against trucks and open topped vehicles, because they have no armour to protect their crew. You will generally always 1 hit them. Generally, HE struggles to kill anything with armour

There are a few tanks in the game with monstrous cannons, capable of shooting humungous HE shells that will kill anything and everything. These are the most fun tanks in the game. The best known one is the KV2:

It might look like a clown tank, but it might as well be shooting nukes. Definitely try this tank out. Another pro choice is the Ho-Ro tank destroyer on the Japanese tree. At battle rating 1.7 you’ll have an absolute blast.

HEAT: These shells function kinda like HE. They explode, which shoots a stream of molten metal straight through armour. Because they use chemical energy, they don’t lose penetration at range. These shells work exactly like HE against lightly armoured vehicles like trucks, and are still able to penetrate tanks. You will want to aim your shots well, as the stream is pretty thin. Early vehicles like the German Stug and the Panzer 4’s before the F2 make good use of this ammo. HEAT stands for High Explosive Anti Tank

As for which one you should pick, for early tanks, try to stick to shells with explosive filler (APHE type shells, heat), and always be practicing your aim. Bind the rangefinder in the settings, and remember to use it when you can, to guarantee a first hit. Getting a good first shot is far more important than your ammo choice.

HESH (High-Explosive Squash Head) acts, to my knowledge, as an HE shell that is actually useful versus armoured targets. As the name suggests, there's plastic explosive in it that gets squashed on the target at the point of impact, then detonates it. I don't have extensive experience with it to know exactly how well it works, but from what I hear it devastates anything if it hits a plate thinner than its pen value, and does nothing otherwise, meaning the heavier tanks are immune to it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

HESH just pancakes against the outside armor and doesn't give a gently caress about armor angles or slopes, it's designed to murder squishy crew with spall fragments from the high surface area explosion against the exterior armor. You can shoot King Tigers or Panther 2's right in the center front hull and the spalling will murder everyone inside.

There's a good chance APCR for guns like the 90mm got a fragmentation buff with the AP changes, I 2 shot the KT in the test grounds with it through the turret face, something the regular M82 can't do and before the last patch used to kill like 1 module or crewmen at a time.

It's not a viable alternative to M82 or any of the better rounds wholesale, but you should probably start carrying some on the tanks that have good versions, like most of the US late war tanks, especially for maps like Sinai and poo poo where you get standoff fights. Carry smoke too, for the same reason.

This is only true if the armor value is actually below the penetration value, otherwise there is no internal result, like most regular HE shots at heavy tanks. All HESH is late war right now though, and has a pen value of like 150mm last I looked, which is enough for most tanks you'll see since it's 150mm at any slope, like HEATFS. Won't work on the turrets of many late war tanks. Skirts and mesh armor will gently caress you up though, just like HEAT.

If I ever go back to playing with Pz. III's I might try out the APCR because apparently it's been buffed a few times since then. It was always "damned if you do, damned if if you don't" with Pz. III ammo choices against the T-34: Your APHE has like a 50/50 chance of penetrating, and your APCR is almost guaranteed to penetrate provide it doesn't skip off but then does little to nothing.

Oddly enough, APCR was surprisingly good at killing early KV-1's since those things have such big, flat, boxy armor. I actually got a few rage tells from KV-1's who were utterly shocked to run across a Pz. III that actually carried APCR and knew how to use it. In hindsight, that experience is probably why I'm not actually all that upset when I'm forced to deal with British Slugs, I've worked with worse...

I only did lower tier ammo, theres no apfsds or heatfs either. Arguably apds is a pretty advanced shell though, I'll add something about hesh tonight.

As for apcr on the kth, are you sure it didnt set off the ammo in the back of the turret?

I mightve but thats an ammo rack at the back end of the turret, so even then that means APCR travelled through the gunner and/or commander and had enough damage left to turn the ammo black.... so either way that's a big improvement. Before you'd be lucky to turn the gunner yellow with a clean pen.

APCR never had pen problems, it had module damage problems in that you wouldn't even kill the poo poo you hit. If it's killing people/gun breeches reliably, then the added pen is a big boost for guns like the 90mm where M82 is 160mm and the APCR is like 265mm against tanks with flat surfaces like the KT(H) or Ferdinand. Like I said you don't carry APCR as a primary ammo because that itself will make you play tanks like the M36 and M26 incorrectly (don't be in front of Tigers), but if it can pull out a decent APCR round in a pinch it's still very useful. This might be doubly true for the M46/M47 before they get their proper ammo.

I'm not sure the 50mm APCR will feel much better, as they said they boosted shell performance based on weight and size, and the 90mm APCR is like 7kg, which isn't that light.

I just took a Pz. III out in the test field. And yeah, the shrapnel effect isn't *great* but it's a whole lot better than before. Before the PzGr 40 and PzGr 40/1 APCR basically were a "laser of severe inconvenience" where it would cut through the armor and you'd get a nice railgun effect that had a 75% chance of killing crew that intersected its path, with maybe 4-5 little fragments of armor spalling.

Now though from what I see in the penetration camera it looks like you get a proper "shotgun" of spalling in addition to the railgun through the components that likely vastly increases the damage you inflict. It's not *great*, if you can pen a target with the PzGr 39 APC-HE round you'll do far better relying on the grenade in it to tear through the tank than the spalling a single kilogram of tungsten generates. However it is a marked improvement compared to before.

I agree with Mazz that you're still playing very, very wrong if you bring APCR as your primary ammo type, but it actually seems to do work now and I'd suggest carrying a few APCR backups on all vehicles that can carry them.
