So, back to the Keepers. It ended in the oddest way... just kind of "yeah, so, that's a story without any solid answers but a poo poo ton of "that guy probably had something to do with it". By the end, jesus, it looked like they're trying to pin it on everybody. Or was it just me?

Not just you, but definitely not what I thought at the end. I think the big mistake you (and a lot of other people) made was not reading the title of the series, even though it's there in every episode. The name of the series is The Keepers, not "Who Murdered this Nun?"

The way they treated the possible suspects was grating, yeah. Especially since one of them didn't seem like he was all there. And some really weird poo poo came out of that. Like the newspaper vagina or whatever the gently caress that was. I do feel like the doc kind of prepares you for the non-ending, though, in that it's the most important point--how the investigation was stymied by corruption.

The Keepers wasn't that hard to watch, it just kept flipping back and biting its own tail in the last 3 or so episodes, so that by the end I wasn't really sure how to feel about anyone involved. They did have some great moments with the new FBI dude where they kept dropping bombshells on him and he had no idea and had to follow them up, but I dunno, the ending kind of went flat to me. Also they had a lot of uhh, I dunno, "tragedy porn" shots near the end, where they went way out of their way to stage meet-ups with people who knew the victim and then bust out some personal trinket and film them bawling and reminiscing over it. I watched the Ruby Ridge and Oklahoma City docs last night back to back and I appreciate whoever gave the recommendation, but to anyone else interested, skip Ruby Ridge. The Oklahoma City movie re-hashes the important parts of Ruby Ridge and makes them relevant to a larger story.

The stories are horrific but after a while it starts to really feel like a Chick-tract rather than something that actually happened.. I mean, black masses performed on tween-aged girls in a catholic high school office, involving priests, police, AND the military? I had a really hard time suspending my disbelief for half of this series, because even though I went to a Catholic High School where some hosed-up poo poo WAS very much going on, I can't imagine that the head priest could have possibly have been running a train on a dozen+ girls with local authority figures... While utilizing his boss psychiatric and hypnotic powers to suppress the whole thing AND every instructor at the instituion was totally incapable of noticing that students kept being pulled from class to visit the "principal" for literally no viable reason. I watched Oklahoma City and it was 'good' as in well put together, you know what I mean. All the PBS ones are. Some of the images from it I remember being absolutely terrified of seeing on TV when it happened (I was 9 back then), and it might have gotten a bit more squawk in the news of my hometown longer than other cities because McVeigh was a local boy. There's also a doc up for Newtown but yeah, I'm not sure if I'm down with watching that... ever. It's got strong reviews, and focuses on the Newtown community trying to pick up after the crisis, but it just seems like it's going to be too much of a goddamn gut punch to sit through. One to toss in the 'pass' column is definitely The Blackout. I mean listen to this description: A citywide power outage merged with a heatwave, a serial killer and understaffed police precincts to create a harrowing blackout in 1977 New York. I mean, that's a spicy meatball, right? Nah, it was just really about the 1977 NYC power outage, that part about the serial killer? One sentence 'you gotta remember, this was the time that David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam murders were taking place'. And, really, it just focused too much on the looting. The description seemed much more interesting.

As I mentioned I attended Catholic school and personally observed a LOT of very questionable behavior by instructors and faculty (priests and not-priests), from casual racism, to expelling girls for being sexually promiscuous while covering up the behavior of the boys who knocked them up, to the weirdly fruity priest fro Alaska who taught music and spent a lot of time putting his hand on the shoulder or back or waist of male students, to instructors literally smoking in the hallwas in the 90s, to an instructor berating a kid to the point that the boy began bawling and ran out of the classroom (the instructor was his father, btw, and he got shat on regularly), to the out-of-date principal who tried to flunk me out of a class for listening to lectures with my eyes closed (his daughter became a striptease dancer), or the south american priest who was so out of touch with American ideals that he fired a teacher over allegations that he was homosexual, told all the male students to cut their hair or be expelled in three days (before senior photos) and who was since sent back to south america to preach to pre-schoolers because little kids from a third world country won't notice just how hosed-up your decisions are.. I mean I can't see any way that a bunch of people would remember forty+ years later that this person did all this poo poo in these kinds of details however, the Jane Doe woman's testimonies really go far off the beaten path compared to a lot of the others, and I personally have a really hard time believing that anybody would just drop by the local catholic high school to have a black mass sex orgy every couple weeks. It had tittys and rude words and other cool stuff that a kid who grew up in a strict southern Baptist household never got to see. The doc gives a pretty insightful look at the people and the motivation behind the production of the magazine.

For film buffs, I enjoyed "DePalma" on Amazon Prime. Basically a lengthy interview with Brian DePalma about his whole career, with a whole bunch of clips of his work interspersed to illustrate points. Just an interesting story about a life in film with some successes and a lot of failures.

"All this and world war 2" is technically a documentary in the barest sense as it's Beatles covers set to a mix of 40's/50s films and WW2 archives telling a rough account of the war. "Decasia" is more of a mood piece, but made up out of decaying bits of lost film from the 1900's. "Sam Klemke's time machine" is about a man who documented his life since 1977. "Shut up little man", with found tapes. Kind of like Winnebago Man as it looks at a cult following of the tapes. Finding Vivian Maier sort of fits with found photos. I'm trying to recall one someone made about their parents family secrets using found archival materials .

I'm watching Can't Stop Won't Stop which is the story of Puff Daddy and Bad Boy Records. It was released for free on Apple Music. It's pretty terrible in terms of filmmaking. It almost tries to mimic the the look and feeling of June 17, 1994 with the sort of flipping through the channels thing, but it doesn't make sense because you're seeing like old home videos. Some of the individual home movie clips are really interesting like Notorious BIG rapping on a street corner at age 17 so if you're interested in that era of hip hop you'll probably find some good bits. Otherwise it's too sloppily made to be that watchable. Oh yeah and Puff Daddy is just so insufferable so it just makes it worse. If I didn't know any better I'd say he tried to make it himself.

I watched The Red Pill. Wasn't what I expected at all. Didn't realize there was a schism between reddit red pill people and the ones who live in reality. I'd recommend watching, especially if you are a feminist as the film is made by one.
