Awesome dude. I'm almost entirely sail these days but in the summer of 2013 and 2014 I was taking cabin cruisers (mostly a Maxum 24 and 25) out on Lake Union & Washington a bunch, so if'n you're wanting to bring someone out... I'll take you and yours out sailing on Puget Sound quid pro quo.

Quick sand of the bottom, made sure to bring down all the trimmed fiberglass, so that I don't cut my hand. Fiberglassed the interior seams, and painted the rest of the bare wood with epoxy resin. Going to go buy paint tonight, do a little sanding, then paint the bottom and inside tomorrow and Friday. Hope to have it on the water this weekend.

An enlistment as a small boat crewmen in the Coastguard means I am overly cautious to things I consider safety gear. There's a lot of things already on the boat, but I want to be sure I have exactly what I want in new condition. I've seen what happens to the under prepared. On the other hand, I'm running my poor wife and daughter through a fairly intensive boat training, and that's really fun/funny. For me. Today I cleaned out the bilge, changed the oil and coolant, pumped out the old gas and replaced it with fresh and water treatment. Then I ran the motors up to temp to bleed the coolant and check for leaks. Now I'm chasing wiring issues. The horn doesn't work, the lower console fuel level doesn't read, the upper console compass is sunk and I can't figure out what console is the master so I can replace the stretched shift cable. Also I have no idea what my fuel capacity is amd I have 6 batteries on this bad boy. Yay. Still on track to float it next week. Are you planning on just doing the one or are you going to go bigger next? I would love to do a resin infusion or an out of autoclave carbon pre-preg hull for a fast tender some day. Much like a BMW (aluminum head, iron block) you get to overheat it ONCE. Then it's headgaskt time at a minimum. I wonder if there are aftermarket big block Ford aluminum heads....

Nice boat Cooch. Have you looked over your fire extinguishers and any smoke detectors? It wasn't on your list, and you would know as an ex-coastguardman how much a fire on board sucks.

I kinda want to build another one of these, with all that I've learned building this one, but this will probably be it for a while unless friends/family rope me into helping build them one of their own. Don't really have much of a need to build a bigger boat, this is for my lab and I to paddle around on, and I've got a 1995 Scout 172 that fills the rest of my boating needs, for the most part.

Fire is the most scary thing I can think of on a boat.

Turns out that the gallon of white paint I thought I had was off-white. Oh well, it'll hide the tannins from my usual river spot a bit better than plain white. Still, got two coats on tonight.

This weekend my daughter and I rebuilt a lower unit, changed out the ruined transmission cable, cleaned up some wiring, replaced lightbulbs with LEDs, bought new rain gear, cleaned the bilge, cleaned the freshwater tank ECT. I still have to repair a small damaged section of fiberglass on the starboard side, replace the rub rail and on an on. Still hoping to get it in the water this week. I also retrofitted my pre alpha-1 mercruiser out drives to take a1 parts, so that's pretty cool. bird cooch fucked around with this message at 17:55 on Jun 13, 2017 |

This just gives me flashbacks to helping my dad work on his boat(100ft steel workboat) when I was a kid. "Your small, crawl down under the main engine and catch the connecting rod as I drop the new cylinders/liners into the block." Bernese are awesome, we had one when I grew up and she was the best dog. They seem to be the new "in" dog in Seattle, especially ballard.

That's why she's in there. "Crawl behind the motor and grab this cable I'm feeding through" As far as berners being "in" dogs, that's a terrible idea. Mags will hit 130+ lbs full grown, there's not near enough room in Ballard for that much dog. I'm going to have to keep my eyes out for dogs that have outgrown the apartment next year. We got her as a dent and ding special because she had a hernia so nobody wanted to buy her. Poor sweet thing. I'm way up yonder way by mount loop, so my finger is far from the pulse of what's cool these days.

Bernese are the best boat dogs. They love to swim but are happy to mostly curl up under a table and act as a space heater.

My wife used to babysit for this lesbian couple who had two young kids and a Bernese, and she was the best guard dog. She didn't recognize my scent (or the scent of any man, to be honest), and while she was never violent, she was very wary about me. Lots of barking and watching.
