Season 5 of Orange is the New Black has just hit Netflix and if you're all caught up to the latest season, 4 ended with a Breaking Bad style cliffhanger. Just to jog your memory (Season 4 spoilers)
After the death of beloved inmate Poussey, a riot is incited by Tasystee after witnessing the press conference making no mention of her best friend's name and shifting the blame off the officer who accidentally suffocated her. At the very last scene we're met with an officer who had smuggled a gun into the prison lose his weapon in the cross section of a hallway, as Dia picks up the gun and aims it at the two officers trying to quell the riot. The following season takes place in the hours/days immediately following this incident and again, will focus on various people's grief over Poussey, the treatment they're getting at the prison, and reveal yet more interesting backstories to side characters you never thought you wanted to know.

quote:

f you haven't watched the first two seasons, a woman named Piper Chapman is sent to prison wherein she has wacky prison adventures. Most episodes are formatted where interspersed with the main plot we get backstory flashbacks for one of the inmates, usually showing how they ended up in prison. While the show is technically about Piper, it's really held together by the strong ensemble cast of the other prisoners.

Summary of Season 1: Piper, an early-30s upper class WASPy woman goes to prison for 15 months for smuggling drug money 10 years ago. Shortly after arriving she reunites with her old girlfriend, Alex, who is also in prison for the same drug related crimes. Alex and Piper rekindle their relationship, causing Piper's engagement with her fiance Larry to be called off. During her time, Piper's attitude makes her several enemies, including a meth-addict named Pennsatucky. During the Christmas pageant Pennsatucky attacks Piper, causing her to nearly beat Pennsatucky to death. Some other plots include a mentally unstable woman known as Crazy Eyes becoming obsessed with Piper, a Russian woman, Red, who smuggles goods in via the kitchen being ousted from her position of power, and an inmate Daya and one of the prison guards, Bennett falling in love, and Daya becoming pregnant. In order to conceal their relationship, Daya has sex with another guard, Mendez (aka Pornstache), who is fired when caught.

Summary of Season 2: Piper, while still technically the protagonist, has little to do in this season. Her breakup with Larry becomes permanent as Larry and Piper's best friend Polly begin a relationship. Alex is released because she testifies against the drug Kingpin she used to work for, but he goes free anyway. She was last seen caught violating her parole by carrying a gun. The main plot of the season surrounds the animosity between Red and a new inmate Vee, who had a history from when Red was newly imprisoned. Vee gathers all the black inmates around her to create a gang, and they begin smuggling cigarettes and drugs into the prison. Red joins with the old ladies and uses a tunnel in the greenhouse to smuggle various prohibited but otherwise harmless items into the prison. The confrontation comes to a head when Vee nearly beats Red to death and then escapes through the tunnel, but is immediately killed when hit by the van of another escaping convict. Daya and Bennett's relationship is rocky as her pregnancy continues, as Pornstache is believed to be the father of the baby, but in the finale Bennett confesses to the new Assistant Warden that it is his child.

(I am directly copy and pasting from the last thread, there will be updates on Season 3 & 4 maybe. Eventually.

Since this is a binge-watch show released all at once, people might not be caught up to where you're at yet and so the spoiler's policy from the last thread seems like a great idea.

quote:

OK, here's what we're going to try as a test. Some people are not happy with the go-wild aspect of the Netflix threads so we're going to try a different approach. If you have general thoughts on the show that's fine. If you are doing specific reactions to episodes they will go into labeled spoiler tags with the episode you are on or have completed for the first 72 hours. If you haven't gotten to that episode then don't click on the spoiler. This is just a trial for Daredevil and if it doesn't work we'll just go back to the old way from now on. And now an example post:

So far the show is good. I enjoy this show so far through episode 10. It is a fine television program.

1x10
The thing that happens in this episode certainly happened. And how it tied back into what they were saying in episode 3 was definitely a cool thing. I think the villain that appeared in this episode and did the villainy thing was bad. He should be punched by the Daredevil and have to go to jail.

The 1x10 is just the episode you're up to. You can write all about episode four if you want, but if you let something slip that came out later and you forget and it maybe happened in episode six that's why you still put episode 10 and not episode 4. Get it? Hope it works. And if not sorry!

I just made this thread because I noticed an error in the last episode, basically.

S5x13
They mention they did count twice and were still coming up 10 short. Counting the 10 in the basement, Chang & Pensyltucky who escaped through the cage, and the addition of Linda, there should have been 11 missing inmates. Nobody noticing of course that at least one inmate was missing. I can see the plot hole *almost* being covered up because the meth girls burned all the records which is of course going to lead to Linda being an inmate by not being able to prove her innocence but it seems like Chang just got away as a gag without them have even remembering she had left.

I suspect they might be including Lolly in their count. She was transferred out the night before the riot, and they make a point about how sloppy the paperwork is, and how slow they are to update even basic information on their guard's files. I mean, it could easily be a mistake on the part of the writers, but if they're now looking for a solution, that's the one I'd pick. Alternately, they're counting Poussey.

Also, that was a contract renewal cliffhanger if ever I saw one.

Ahuh. You're missing my point.

The narrative puts the show in such a position that it can fire whomever it wants to going into next season. Literally every character's fates are up for grabs. They'll all in such a position where they could either be shot, sent to a different prison and never seen again, escape forever or never leave Schu. The guards and staff are in such a position that any or all of them could be fired and never heard from again.

The standard television contract contracts an actor for five seasons of work, after which they're allowed to renegotiate the amount they're paid per season. However, putting an actor's character in a precarious positions removes some of their bargaining power from that negotiation. They're less able to argue that they're essential to a show, and therefore have less leverage for a pay rise.

Given the hiring practises the show follows -- they add a few new regulars each season, and have cut maybe four from the cast total, not including a credited regular who appears not once the entire season and was presumably being paid a lot to do that -- I suspect they won't actually go through with any of this. I was being wry. But this is the kind of practise I was referring to.

I think 6 and 7 are already confirmed. Netflix is secretive about viewer counts, but I remember reading that this was their most watched original program. They're going to milk it as long as possible.

I'm at 4 episodes now and I like this season a lot so far.

I think the idea of having (what I assume is going to be) the entire season taking place during or immediately after the riot seemed like a stupid idea at first, but it's working great so far. What really confuses me though, is how publicly known or not known this is. Both Piscatella and the dude who killed P got push notifications for the video, but the general public and law enforcement don't really seem to give a gently caress about this prison riot / hostage situation? I don't get it.

The timeline of the season is very compressed. The first five episodes happen in the first 24 hours after the riot starts. 5x5 The prison riot is on the news the morning after riot started.

Yeah they've been renewed through season 7.
Just finished the season and I have to say I really enjoyed it, moreso than season 4. I thought the premise for the season, having it take place over the course of a couple days dealing with the fallout from Poussey's death was a nice change of pace. I felt like giving the inmates the freedom to move around and do whatever without worrying about the guards was also a welcome relief. Finally, despite still dealing with some heavy themes, it felt much more lighthearted than last season which was definitely welcome.

One thing that always impresses me with OitnB is that there's always a character that you start to think "There's no way this character is redeemable. They're just plain evil" and then after awhile they end up being likable again, or at least trying to attend for their sins/mistakes.

This is really highlighting how few on-screen staff the prison actually has. 5x01-5 I know they mentioned a few medical staff left before things got heated but they took hostage basically every employee that was in the prison when the riot started. Which was six.

Really? I thought last season had a ton of depressing plots: Alex & Piper not being together (minor but I think the show is more fun when they are), Sophia being in solitary & the fallout from that, Healy locking that crazy woman up/going to a psych facility himself after thinking about killing himself, the aftermath of Pennsyltucky getting raped, Piper creating a nazi group and then getting branded, the rise of Piscatella, Maritza getting forced to eat that mouse, Poussey dying, Nicki being back on drugs, Suzanne being forced to fight and nearly beating that other inmate to death, and there may be other stuff I'm forgetting too. I enjoyed last season but I thought it was heavy compared to others, including this one.

They wanted the poor guy to perform surgery on that one meth-head's finger, so they locked him up until they were ready for him. They're dumb, but they're not so dumb as to believe that he wouldn't run the gently caress away the first chance he got. It's easier for them to hold onto one prisoner at a time than two, and they don't want him being held hostage by some other group of prisoners.

Linda is in charge of purchasing for the company that owns the prison. She used to date Caputo, and was leaving the prison just as the riot started. She's loving horrible.

And his flashback only really establishes "Okay, he's a sociopath who doesn't like criminals, because...other criminals attacked and raped his criminal boyfriend?"

Just finished it and I really enjoyed the season as a whole. It was uneven in places, the tone was all over the place, and it would've worked much better as maybe nine episodes (three per day, evenly spaced out) but overall they went for something pretty ambitious and it mostly paid off. I do tend to enjoy stories set in single locations in a tight timescale though. The sort of thing where you know where all the major players are and what they're doing throughout the entire story unless you're not supposed to know. It's intimate.

I agree that they left it so frustratingly precarious that who does and doesn't return next season will just be arbitrary. They could've given the last episode an extra 30 minutes (like they usually do) and made it the finale of the whole series, for sure.

e: I was also glad to see Piper's mum and Jason Biggs back, if only briefly. It always bothers me when supporting characters drop off the face of the earth in later seasons of a show (although Biggs has no real reason to appear in the main story again). We need her brother to come back too.
