Watching this episode. Ms Sanders makes the best response to Bill's "let's talk about me again" attempts to be absolved on air. Ice Cube is mostly ridiculous because you can see him going through the mental gymnastics of rationalizing what he's saying with the amount of money he's made using slurs.

drat is Maher leaning hard into this new gimmick with now reaching for Nugent after the breitbart idiot. Nance's amusement in OT was countered pretty grimly by his seemingly palpable excitement for getting SWAT in on folks instead of examining deep underlying societal problems on the panel... I mean, you'd think he'd start to clue himself in when he was mounting his rickety cross in the opening interview about Not Even Democrats wanting to come on his show lately.

They dumped $11 million into it a few years back, which is chump change to a family worth over $30 billion. They'll be fine, and it's hilarious watching them imply otherwise. gently caress Breitbart, but I am concerned about corporations - who have enough power and influence already - in general controlling speech and content through advertisers. This really is an extension of the immense problem of corporate media altogether; specifically in their refusal to (accurately) cover the dispossession and material interests of the poor. I like how Bill brought it up.

Not to mention the amount of public discussion (such as it is) occurs so much on corporate-owned and controlled content platforms that are tooled for constant "engagement" with the goal of funneling constant user activity into whatever can make a buck or tickle a shareholder's balls. (Unless that's also/exactly what you're talking about.)

It's interesting how liberal shows continuously demonize wealthy Rs and conservative shows continuously demonize wealthy Ds. Ian Bremmer is always insightful. It was the New Rules rant for the first episode after the election. It seems like the change in theme song and set correlates with the show's slide into unwatchable absurdity. The convention shows at least provided some very good panel material.

Larry Wilmore's latest podcast episode has Maher. I haven't listened yet. I don't usually link to iTunes but soundcloud and the other hosting sites haven't gotten the episode up yet. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/larry-wilmore-black-on-the-air/id1234429850?mt=2 (one of my pet peeves are podcasts which don't even bother to throw together a website with their own audio archives updated immediately.) edit: skip to 15 minutes or so for the interview. I kind of feel like it's all stuff I've heard before though double edit: "the real problem with america is that people are too tribalistic," says man who spends first half of his interview talking about how he is dicriminated against for being irish, catholic, and the son of a radio celebrity. "Well the problem are the liberal snowflakes twho go around comedy clubs hunting for comedians to be offended by." "[On being banned from speaking on a campus) Well the issue is the snowflakes who don't want to get offended.. But it was probably the Muslims first.""I invented the term 'politically incorrect' in 1993" quote:In the early-to-mid 20th century, the phrase "politically correct" was associated with the dogmatic application of Stalinist doctrine, debated between Communist Party members and American Socialists. This usage referred to the Communist party line, which provided "correct" positions on many political matters. Bill made the good point last week that Trump is accustomed to firing people until he gets his way. But this won't work under the current system. It's one of those Republican/conservative ideological flaws where many think that the US Government is one giant business. Yea, in certain simple respects it is but the US Gov't isn't congruent with a typical giant US corporation. Especially in 2017 where an autocratic CEO and other levels of management can fire a lot of people for all kinds of reasons with great ease. And even when those people are burrowed in more they can just offer them golden parachutes and severance packages. Trump can't do this with all the other dirtbag politicians though. Right now Trump is wishing he could fire some of the SCOTUS justices and also fire a TON of R and D senators and congressmen. It remains to be seen if Trump's continual ineffectiveness (and his pragmatic proclamations) will lead to a 2020 downfall. If not much continues to happen I expect some military action soon.

Holmes isn't quite on the level of a bottomless bucket, but drat if she doesn't carry a needless and vast amount of water for the worst sorts of institutions. Think this season is setting the record for smaller panels---which is not great given the mix. Tail end of New Rules was just embarrassing especially given how poorly he did framing his domestic pivot from the start of the show before he immediately lost the thread on it.
