I warned you guys spoilers would be everywhere!

WOW/VH1 are kind of ridiculous for filming a finale with a major format change and thus two super big spoilers ... two weeks before even airing. Should have done reunion this week and finale next, or something. Try to mitigate it at least a bit.

I think it may have been scheduling issues tho, with the Werq the World tour and other things going on/Prides, etc there's a lot of Drag Race alumni who couldn't even make it this weekend.

It's funny how the format change seems to be in retaliation, almost, for all of season 9 getting spoiled right away. Yet they still do this big change in front of a live audience and expect Nancy Drews to not run to the internet immediately after.

Season 9 has been a clusterfuck in general. I'll be almost relieved when it's over.

Seriously, it's felt like there's been a witch's curse over the whole season, even moreso than season 7. (Even though s9 was less actively off-putting than 7 at its worst, it just felt like the air was being constantly let out of its tires with every new "well that's not great for TV, how did this all get hosed up that badly?") I can't imagine the producers are happy with how it went given the talented crop of queens (once again reminiscent of 7 where you have a terrific batch of talent and episode after episode that just...seems to bring the worst or blandest out of them for various reasons), but maybe it won't matter if ratings continue to ratchet up as they have for the past few years. At least s8 and All-Stars 2 were prime-cut Drag Race. This was not.

Right, I definitely think production failed our girls this year, and it is no fault of their own.

Something I thought at the time, but didn't at the time have the time to point out: did anybody but me notice lip syncing as part of the maxi challenge the week after Valentina poo poo the bed? I really loved it, actually, and I thought it was a decent love letter to the art of the lip sync after the disaster of the prior week. And this might be confirmation bias (I've seen every episode, but that includes a 5-season binge four years ago), but it really feels like Valentina's bullshit led production to go balls to the wall with showcasing the lip syncing for the rest of the season.

I just thought that was nifty.

The difference between seasons 7 and 9, what makes 7 leagues ahead imho: the former at least brought the drama.

Strong personalities and a hefty dose of shade can save even the blandest season. It's like production this year refused to show any shade, in fun or otherwise. Charlie has said they easily could have given him the bitch edit, and some of the queens have mentioned Sasha being shady af and reading people and we get like none of that, either.

It's like, they were banking on Eureka and Trinity being a new Alyssa/Coco, then when Eureka popped her knee and had to go home they went with ... Nothing.

gently caress I miss when this show was just a bunch of hungry drag queens scrambling for the crown and that cash.

We would all do well to listen closely to Jasmine Masters, tbh.

Drag Race has been neutered for a while, but even season 8 had drama. It's weird how sterile it is just one year later.

I agree. This season has been boring since eliminating the "villains", and even they were only villains for a day. I don't tune in to watch RuPaul's Best Friend Race. If this is how future seasons is going to be, I'm clocking out, because none of these queens are going to be nearly as memorable as someone like Mimi Imfurst, Shangela, Tyra, et al.

the villains we ended up with in this season - nina and alexis - were really only villains to themselves, which i kind of liked.

s9 has had a huge number of great queens and really good characters - but the editing has been all over the place and the story arcs haven't really led anywhere. the back half of the season has remedied this (ru finally visits the workroom! we actually see judge's critiques on the runway!) but the entire first half was forgettable as heck. but i guess that's the nature of the beast with reality television

(while i am feeling nostalgic - god drat how fantastic is season 6; bianca, adore, laganja, gia gunn, ben dlc. and we got some really memorable early boots too: magnolia crawford, vivacious, milk. goddamn what a season.)

Meanwhile my Spotify discover weekly decided to let me know that Miss Fame released an album with a song called Rubber Doll and.... Whoo boy. It's umm. Probably what you'd expect from a song by Miss Fame, a queen I constantly forget exists.

No, I'm with you on this. I love drama, but I prefer it to be 100% fictional. There's just something about knowing that these are real people who might have trouble getting work if they're not the right shade of awful to each other that makes watching them tantrum and melt down painful to watch.

I just finished up watching AS2 and as soon as Alaska started melting down and offering people $10k to keep her on there, I had to skip through the rest of the elimination for that episode because the secondhand embarrassment made it impossible to watch. It's nice that apparently that meltdown resulted in $10k being donated to a trans youth organization, but I'm happy if I never see another queen lose their poo poo that hard ever again.

I'm currently doing my best to avoid spoilers--I really want Sasha to win, and if I find out beforehand that she didn't, getting through the finale is going to be a disappointing slog.

the alaska meltdown was really ugly - some queens succeed even more when they show exasperation and vulnerability but alaska's character (to me) only works when she's an unstoppable slay machine with no achilles heel.

laganja's untucked freakout could have gone that way but instead bianca decided to get involved and it was amazing.

While Phi Phi really is a horrid bitch, it makes me sad that she got death threats and wound up having to leave drag…Like, there's some obvious mental issues there that girl needs help with, but throwing her out of the community isn't going to get her that help.

The Alaska thing…ugh. I wound up blocking it out because it was just so weird and gross and completely out of character. I'm honestly surprised she didn't get booted for that.

I'm literally avoiding any drag-race-related media until the finale, and treating it like the old Harry Potter releases. You just find out when it debuts, and stay away from people on the internet until then.

The important thing to remember about Alaska's little meltdown: it was her first time being in the bottom. Ever. She went through all of season 5 and most of AS2 without ever lip syncing for her life. To be in the bottom 2 for the first time, on the only season where your fate is in someone else's hands, and you can't even lip sync your way out of it?

I never understood the hate for that. Yeah she got ugly for a moment, but it's a high stress competition and they were a challenge or two away from the end. Besides, the 10k thing always seemed like Alaska joking around in a bad situation. Detox was laughing and Roxxxy looked equally amused.

I'm really not an Alaska fan honestly, I get the appeal but the wow factor has never really been there for me, and the untucked meltdown really took her from "one trick pony that knows exactly how this game is played" to "sordid spoiled brat" in an instant.

Wait, you think Alaska was leaking stuff during? Even if she had a phone with her, the show was filmed a year before it aired. The leaks came well after filming had ended, iirc. I doubt she wanted those leaks to happen anyway, blame the boyfriend for being an idiot. Alaska isn't the first queen to tell her loved ones what happened during filming, and she won't be the last.

The backlash to Alaska from AS2 boggles my mind almost as much as the Pandora backlash in AS1, when everyone else was way nastier to Mimi than she was.

I love Katya as much as the next person, but I love Alaska, too. She auditioned every year from season one to season five, had an amazing track record and never hit the bottom once. Then AS2 rolls around and again, an excellent track record with only one BTM2. She loving earned it.

Getting pissy over Ru asking the fan opinion before the finale is silly. He's been asking for #team hashtags since they started filming the finales in front of an audience, back in season four. It was never meant to be a fan vote to choose the winner, just seems like with more viewers and more people tweeting every year, people start taking it more seriously than they should.

fwiw I'm not trying to attack anybody in this thread specifically, just been dealing with a lot of salty gays lately and it's given me ~feelings~. Venting about this is helping having to wait two weeks to vent about the S9 finale ...

^^^ I kind of love the idea of the twist itself for nostalgic reasons, just not the way it's executed.

The salt online once it airs will be fun, though. And I'm 100% going to catch the finale in a bar.

Something from Survivor press is that production tells the cast, this is your season. You've played, and you've got the info, and it's up to you not to be a shitheel with it, because spoiling your own drat season will lessen its impact, not only for us, but especially for you.

Any reality competition show has tea and shade and drama, and I suppose drag race has more than most. The stuff about Alaska is kind of a bummer, to be sure, but I guess at this point it's almost to be expected. Spoilers are only in specific corners of the internet, so it's in our (your) power to avoid and keep everything fun.

If it was the Biggest Deal Ever, Logo would pay a few more bucks for a better legal team to make the NDAs a straight up dryfuck.

Exactly. I mean, look at this season. Everything up to and including nobody being eliminated in the top 4 episode was spoiled from the get go. lovely people will leak stuff, no matter who the source is.

RPDR has a strong history of being a leaky-rear end boat, anyway. Perez Hilton leaking Raja's win is why they stopped doing top 2 lip syncs, and started filming multiple crownings so even the winner doesn't know if they got it.

e: this show is also kind of a special case, with Nancy Drews getting super extra every year and digging up everything. I'm sure if you looked into other reality show communities, you would find poo poo leaking left and right there, too. These shows are typically filmed so far before airing, it's kind of inevitable in a world where everyone has the internet in their pocket

World of Wonder has always been complete amateurs. Drag Race is a success despite them, not because of them. You can't find it online anymore, but comedian Julie Goldman was on an episode of Drag U, and she spilled all the tea on an episode of what was then still known as Gay Pimpin'. Just basically things how she was forced to sit in a locked room with just a chair and no food or water for like 8 hours straight. Not to increase drama, but just because they didn't know what else the gently caress to do with the "contestants" when they weren't needed. Add to that, all the gossip about the petty squabbles the production staff gets into with contestants, and failing to provide adequate food for contestants, particularly vegetarian contestants. Sharon has said how during season 4, she survived on mayonnaise sandwiches because craft services wouldn't even give them any loving vegetables.

That they still haven't figured out a way to lock down spoilers after 11 seasons is of no surprise.
