Even with 50% accuracy penalty it'd still be an outlier in the skills because it's the only one that directly increases the amount of stuff you can do in one turn instead of just giving you more flexibility or new actions. Also, forcing a sprint and shoot isn't exactly a penalty - a sprint has no built-in distance requirement. You can just sprint 1 hex and shoot while getting evasive - that's exactly what makes it too good in the first place.

Maybe turn it into a pilot skill that doubles your distance-moved defense passively instead of a 50% dodge on top of everything. That means you actually need to move to be dodgy and naturally gives more of a benfit to mechs that are fast (regardless of weight or size). Bonus is that it makes sprinting evasive mover pilots incredibly survivable (assuming they use their sprinting distance that is) - but they still don't get to shoot doing it.

On another note, I wonder how Battltech would play if it took the speed-based always-on defense bonus from Alpha Strike instead or on top of the distance moved one.

It might be an outlier but thats not necessarily a bad thing. It would directly nerf its usefulness on heavier mechs since it would cut their damage output significantly seeing as they typically carry more guns. Lights would remain less affected seeing as they rarely have much more than a brace of medium lasers anyway. It also offers tactical versatility which is more fun and engaging as a player. Do you play more defensively and provide intel for your other mechs or do you take the risk of having half your mech blown apart but cause more damage?

There was a Q&A yesterday and HBS confirmed a patch (not multiplayer) would be coming in the next week or so. So back up whatever mods you've created. Specifically changes in the manifest file.

So I tuned the "Knockdown, Headshot" team down to a 15mil drop that can still salvage 3/4 of the standard Heavy Assault Lance. The COM-2D and TBT-9N provide unsteady and knockdowns, then the UM-R60 and HBK-4G followup with called shots to the head. If they miss the head, hey it's still a ton of damage to the enemy team that really out guns you. I was going in just trying to live and shoot for CT kills, but it really is faster and safer to just shoot for the head and see if you get lucky. Compared to the 25mil team, the enemy and I took far more damage and thus less expected salvage, but I could have outright bought new Hunchbacks and Trebuchets with the money saved.

HBS did say that in the full release piloting skill will influence how fast a Mechs becomes unsteady so even if they don't tweak the numbers it will change.

Alchenar

It seems to me that 'unsteady' should be less of a 'warning - you can be knocked over!' state and more of a debuff in itself that reduces accuracy and has the additional risk of terrible critical falling over.

I mean, technically it makes you unable to sprint as well, so there's that I guess

Also means you lose and can't get evasion, even with the pilot ability.

Which is super relevant, since sprinting to gain both distance and evasion is the best way to get a mech out of trouble. Getting knocked unsteady in a bad spot can turn sour real quick.'it forces to to brace instead, which leaves you open to both getting shot and to melee.

Which is lowkey fantastic. It just sheds stab damage when you reserve which gives you multiple opportunities per turn to drop stab damage compared to other Pilots' one.

The fact that the Kintaro is a Good Mech (maybe even a Great Mech) in this game is really messing up the part of me that remembers playing MWO.

I expect this setup to not work on release. However, if the basics of the knockdown mechanic and called shots to the head don't change significantly, the method can work with Mech1: Melee to unsteady, Mech 2: Melee to knockdown, Mech 3: Melee to Knockdown if needed/called shots 1, Mech 4: Awesome 3x PPC Called shots to Head. That or whatever becomes the cheese-knocker meta. I don't think the strategy will be as lethal and safe as it is now (killing a fresh mech from the front in 1 focused round) but it some form it will be the way to salvage stuff in the campaign. In the 25mil kit, my Trebs are only firing 1/2 the LRMs at a time so if knockdowns are toned down and piloting factored in, I can easily double the knockdown power by firing both LRMs. On protracted single player missions, this might have to be saved for big enemies, but in skirmish/multiplayer it would be worth it to immediately kill 1/2 the team and then use the Trebs as distraction punchers.

I setup the enemy with a 2x HBK-4G and 2x AWS-8Q and gave my single assault, the Atlas, the Master Tactician. This is just unfair to the Awesomes. You rarely get to have one Assault used called shots on another without reserving your lighter units in some way. The Atlas moving in the heavy phase let me cripple/kill the Awesomes before they could get back on their feet. I love how the Kintaro/Hunchies become light hunters and Orion to medium hunting with Master Tac.

I was more concerned with knockdown strats aimed at the player, honestly. The AI is pretty good at milking their trebuchet indirect fire for all it's worth even when it's not causing knockdowns "Okay, I brought a catapult-oh I got hit three times by an out of sight Treb, there goes one of my launchers"

It's a hotly requested feature on the official forums and one of the devs gave a really long explanation as to why not on this post here on this page. (warning, official forums)

Basically, if they give you that power, they have to explain it, explain what situations you should use it in, animate it, balance around it.

Pretty much 'no'.

All the other games just abstracted it with "mech destroyed, show punch out animation unless it's a headshot kill." Whether it shows an eject or not the game play won't be that different.

I'm hopeless, I only just figured out how to hit and run with light's using the reserve button. :cripes: They really need to show you how to do it in a future tutorial in the single player campaign, for the dumbs like me. Also, is there a height difference penalty for mechs shooting other mechs that are on hills? I felt that moving my light up onto a hill was suicide, but that was before I figured out how to use phases properly. :downs:

Yep. The game wants to take alternating turns and you can screw with it to your advantage as long as you have a unit that isn't taking its Turn in Phase 1.

The Kickstarter update also confirms that:
a) Multiplayer is really hard you guys (netcode is the devil)
and
b) because it's taking so long, they've got time to add in some balance changes and a massive AI update (it'll reserve, call shots, etc.).

And they make it clear again that it's not an early access title, there's not going to be any ongoing balance updates or anything for the beta.
