I'll also say that there was a nonzero chance that Optimus could have died in that movie. I mean, he died in the animated movie, so there's precedent for it.

I mean, that chance then would be like 5%, but if you're a "fan" of the franchise (god help you), I can see something in the back of your mind saying, "Well, I've seen him die before, so maybe...?"

Sure, but I thought he stayed died for quite a while after the animated movie? Like, for the purposes of the movie he was straight up dead. And then for a while after that in the show.

Did he come back in that incarnation of the show? Or not until Beast Wars? (Transformers "canon" is so weird to try to follow.)

Optimus has contempt for humans since the first movie I dunno why he even gives a poo poo about the planet. I know the writers strike happened during the second one but making 2 robots super racist is beyond comprehension. Like nobody watched that for 2 seconds in a screening and raised their hand? What in the gently caress?

Beast Wars actually takes place before Transformers due to time travel shenanigans. So Optimus Prime is there, he's just in stasis lock (robot coma), and even then he almost dies. I don't know much about Transformers outside of Beast Wars but I do recall it basically being that Optimus gets killed off in the movie, then he gets brought back at the end of the season of the TV series following said movie due to fan backlash.

Well that's somewhat better than the animated G.I. Joe movie, that killed Duke when you saw it in the theater, and then on the home video release, freeze framed on his face as he "died" and had a voice over saying something like, "He's gone into a coma!" And then when everyone is cheering at the end that they won, someone over a loud speaker (out of loving nowhere, because I'm pretty sure they were in the enemy's cave base) someone says, "And Duke is gonna be okay!"

At least that's my hazy memory of how that went down.

edit: Hmm, Wikipedia tells me I'm wrong and that the original script did this, but by the time the movie came out, it was always the same version. Just that the film makers filmed it so "[If] you watch the visuals and don't listen to the soundtrack, it's obvious Duke dies." I must have heard this story and added actually seeing it in my head as some weird false memory.

I'm pretty sure the only edits made between the theatrical and home video version of Transformers: The Movie is an "Oh poo poo!" and a "dammit" were removed.

That animated movie was great. They were killing Transformers left and right. Big characters too!

I know it was just to clear the way for new Transformers, to make new toys. But holy poo poo, Ironhide dying in the first 5 minutes blew me away as a kid! Then Optimus Prime, dead. Starscream, dead. Megatron, mostly kinda dead? And others I'm forgetting.

That movie was the poo poo.

The movies could have done with the same tactic. Lady robots are cool. Why don't we get to hang with the lady robots? Get rid of Ratchet, nobody cares about him. The character bloat is ridiculous. The second movie has Sideswipe, the magic rollerskating bot, for like ten minutes. Get him in! You only really need Optimus, Bumblebee, Megatron and Starscream, and swap the cast around them. You get to sell new toys! We get to have focus on these things for more than a few seconds.

I really wish that the Transformers films were directed by anyone other than Bay. Even if they were just disposable popcorn flicks, they'd at least be watchable. I have only seen the first two and its been years but listening to these episodes reminds me how painfully unentertaining these films are. If the TF movies had the quality of something like Pacific Rim I would be completely content.

I never saw the third and only saw bits of the fourth but apparently the fourth one is a little better than the others?

Other people seem to view it as a religious experience and a feminist masterpiece, so perhaps I am missing something though.

The thing they've said is "it's the last one Bay is doing". I think at least one person at the studio is gonna try going on after he leaves unless they end this in apocalyptic ways.

Charlie Day was pretty much the highlight, yeah.

For other people's reactions: there's sort of an inverse bell curve of how much you'll like Pacific Rim based on how much you like mecha anime. If it's not your thing at all, you'll hate Pacific Rim because it's Literally Getter Robo and Getter Robo is pretty much the ur-mecha anime, not only creating almost all of the genre's cliches but turning them up to eleven (Giant Robo/Gigantor and Mazinger Z predate it, and Mazinger is similar in many respects, but PR draws mainly from Getter). If you're into it, but not super knowledgeable about it, it'll basically set your world on fire because holy poo poo they made a live-action super robot movie, this is amazing. If you're a huge mecha nerd, you'll probably hate it because it's Literally Getter Robo and you've already loving seen Getter Robo, multiple times across various incarnations even.

Pacific Rim was fun and good. Giant robots and Charlie Day. Whoever said it was a masterpiece of feminism is an idiot but it's not shoving cameras up women's assholes or violently murdering them so on that basis alone it's infinitley more watchable than Transformers.

I gave points to Pacific Rim for having their combat scenes being infinitely easier to follow. Transformers did have some nice moments, but there was also a lot of "swirling tornado of generic gray robot parts I can barely make heads or tails of".

In this climate of maximum hyperbole I'm willing to believe both sides of that argument are willing to scream it to the heavens that it was either the most feminist thing ever or the total opposite.

I just looked at Mako's place in the movie and actually having some kind of notable character arc as being just a big ball of okay in that regard.

Pacific Rim was mostly just boring. Like, I don't understand how the people who criticize the Transformers movies for focusing too much on the humans and not enough on the robot action are perfectly fine with Pacific Rim having only three big robot fight scenes and instead being mostly training montages, flashbacks, and inter-team drama broken up with the loud comic relief characters running around and yelling a lot.

Also people complain about the fight scenes in Transformers being incomprehensible due to the busy designs of the robots and the constant distracting "Bayhem" going on at all times but the Pacific Rim fight scenes all take place at night and are murky and poorly lit, the first one being a shoving match in waist-deep ocean water in the middle of a storm and the climax being literally underwater with everyone moving in slow motion in the middle of sand they keep kicking up when they move.

It's OK To Like A Movie and all but I feel like half of the goodwill people have towards Pacific Rim is because the creator is a fat hairy manchild and not a "dumb jock" like they imagine Michael Bay is.
