Goddammit. That's a huge disappointment.

I guess I can't fault them too much since they're just a few guys making their first game and all. And I certainly got my money's worth out of the game.

I do have complaints though. The weapon system is kind of bad. There is none of that great progression from the armor system and sometimes upgrades feel too slight (with the exception of the big meaty two-handers). The differences between the weapons are a bit lopsided and lead to clear favorites but its not terrible. Sometimes I feel like I need a long break as it can feel like just samey battle after samey battle, particularly in the early mid-game when I seem to depopulate a few generations of bandits.

On a warmer note, what are you guys favorite weapons? I gotta say heavy crossbow and 2H hammer, gives most enemies a run for their money :black101:

The first time I saw a Greatsword in action was during a big bandit fight in which some local lord joined in. The first attack he made was the Smash guys in a line attack. Took the head clean off the first bandit and sent the other one into fleeing immediately. I was hooked on those from then on.

Greataxes look great and have a nice meaty hit.

Flails are awesome.

Crossbows in general are pretty cool. Firing off a Crossbow and headshoting a bandit marksmen on the first turn of a battle, with the achievement popping up, really sold me on the game.

This game has tons of cool moments.

Edit: While I'm thinking and posting about this game, I really do want to give a big shoutout to Hieronymous Alloy for that wonderful Beginners Guide. Absolutely fantastic at easing me into the game.

They seemed disappointed with sales after release. Pretty dumb to judge performance before the finished game appears in the big summer sale, imo. People are trained to wait for sales, and $30 is on the high end of the price range for indie games. The game has (had?) great word of mouth and would probably do well in the sale.

I'm really disappointed with their decision. Not adding Steam workshop support is understandable since that is hard to add if the game is not designed for it from the ground up. DLC should be a no-brainer, and I think people would be willing to shell out for more enemy factions, crises etc.

They should put the fucker on sale for $10 or less in the summer steam sale and see how it does. I bet they'd at least double their revenue.

Calling it quits right before the summer sale does not seem smart to be honest. Like why not discount it and see how well it does and then gauge interest.

They've got 2,600 reviews on steam and from what I've heard that's usually somewhere between 0.5-5% of your players :v: I dunno how long Battle Bros was in development but that is a lot of sales for a first game with no big publisher backing it. It's probably a combination of a long dev cycle, team fatigue, and them being based out of a high living-expense country (Germany). A 2.5 year dev cycle and equal shares in the team would mean, if they sold 52000 copies, that their programmer is making a below market rate salary.

Steamspy (which, admittedly, is not a very accurate source) had them at ~40k when they left early access and ~80-95k total this month. I guess they were aiming for something north of 100k?

yeah gamers are giant embarassing babies. they'll simultaneously wax lyrical about how back in the day games were released complete and maaaaybe with an expansion pack or two but also expect present games to be continuously patched forever with new content being developed and given away for free or cheap until who knows when

there's certainly more room for stuff to be added into battle brothers but it's a pretty complete game with a hefty amount of replayability as it is, if you start adding more stuff then it begs the question of why you don't add this, or that, or creates hooks for new additions, and at some point with a game like this you just have to declare the game "done" and move on

Yeah honestly I'd love for BB to get a few more features, like different battle maps etc, but feature creep is a thing and the game is baller as it is. The devs have always come across as very competent and reasonable folk, so if they judge that it wouldn't be feasible to expand the game much further then I'll defer to their judgement.

Maybe now that they've sharpened their claws with Battle Brothers, they can make their next game a bit bigger? At any rate, I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing what they've come up with next.

vyelkin
Jan 2, 2011
Battle Brothers seems like a game that would work well with an actual expansion pack (rather than free patch stuff) or even DLC--new classes, larger maps, more endgame crises, more mission variety, etc. But if the devs would rather just call it finished and move on, that's cool. Hopefully they'll pick up enough extra money from Steam sales that they can put more time into their next game and make it bigger and better.

I'm veering off-topic here, but with the summer sale coming up, all you German-Pixelgame lovers should take a look at The Curious Expedition. Aside from being a turn-based party-management thingie, it's not very similar to Battle Bros, but it's super charming, and there's a lot of (interactive!) event variety and a solid amount of replay value for the price. Should be under 10bux in the sale.

Depends on when the first one started and ended. I haven't figured out how it works exactly, but I've had two long-running saves that I retired after going through all three crises and both stopped a few weeks short of day 300.
