Everyone has had at least one day where they really wanted to quit their job, abandon their home and family, push their car off a bridge, strip nude, douse the clothes in gasoline and toss a match over their shoulder as they walk confidently out of their own life. It's perfectly natural to want to run away and join the circus... except that, at least in the United States, there aren't really circusses anymore.

Times are changing, but that spark of panicky escape-fear still smolders in the reptile brains of men and women, with no sign of extinguishing soon. We might not be able to run away and join the circus, but what other jobs/lives exist to run away to? Realistic bug-out plan or total fantasy, what occupations do y'all envision escaping to when your boring regular jobs are just too boring/regular? Bonus points for unskilled/learn-as-you-work jobs, they're rarer than a pot o' gold!

Terrible starting example: blackjack dealer. Everyone I've ever talked to about working at a casino says it stinks, and every gambling town I've ever been to seemed to be in competition for "most depressing/worst rents on earth". But stinky depression wasn't enough to keep the circus from being the old cliche, so who knows? Perhaps the fast-paced life of bilking old people between meals of cold buffet leftovers is the freedom you've been dreaming of!

I can't say it's something I fantasize about specifically, but I have a relative who manages to get by in Japan by officiating western-style weddings (among other things, but this is sort of his main gig). He happens to be tall, good-looking, charismatic, and blonde, all of which are advantages (esp. in Japan where all that is exotic), and of course he's picked up fluent Japanese and enjoys living in Japan. But I get the sense it's quite good pay for not a lot of time spent actually working.

If living in Asia is your thing, I also get the sense that being an English teacher there (say, in China, or maybe Korea) is going to require an absolute minimum in terms of qualifications and allow you to get by quite well. Apparently you don't even need to know the local language particularly well.

For me, I'd love to be in some beautiful area, near vineyards say (e.g. Australia/NZ, or South America, or . . . well there are plenty of beautiful spots like that) and have some sort of job that allows me to take money from rich tourists. Maybe running wine tours or something. Harvesting grapes is honest work but probably backbreaking and doesn't give you much time to travel around (and doesn't pay super well). Running a tasting room for a vineyard may be OK but it sort of anchors you to one spot all day, again less than ideal imo.

I imagine that you'd have to pay for the privilege, and there's no way of knowing that modern methods are actually doing it right so that it would be cost effective to reverse the process.

I put myself as a donor on my drivers license so if I'm lucky, they'll freeze me as an experiment

but I'm secretly hoping to be someone's first cadaver for medical school

I was going to do this for a while but my uncle + other people I talked to who have been there say it's the most heartbreaking thing on earth because it's such a beautiful pristine and peaceful place but it's almost impossible to get a second contract to work there, so after your contract you live the rest of your life missing it and wanting to go back. There's a good documentary about it and some lifers on netflix, or it used to be there anyway, and I forget the name of it.

You can go do fish canning in Alaska. You make $10-15 an hour for cutting up fish guts 16 hours a day but room and board is 100% paid for and you get to save every dime of it

We're in an era where you can make a living by bumming it around the US and writing a blog about it and then just shopping all your posts around to different publications + throwing up some ads + sending it to open contributor platforms. If you're doing something with your life that most people wish they had the guts to do, like quit your job and hike across the US with 1 pair of clothes and a laptop or something, you'll get readership especially if you SEO well and etc.

Are the oil fields in North Dakota still a thing?

About 6 years ago you could get a luxury apartment in a gated, english-speaking community with a built in grocery store and etc. in Thailand for around $100 USD/month. I don't know about now but that's where all of my brother's online poker buddies ended up

I can get anyone a $29k/year call center tech support job in Tempe, Arizona even though I don't work there anymore

You can go do the temporary summer positions at state parks like Glacier National Park and you get to live in a cabin there while you do it

Cruise Ship jobs let you travel the world, they don't pay much but it's 16hour days with zero room and board just like fish canneries

Having been there a bunch, and love Alaska in the summer, I seriously considered this to escape the heat not long ago. My parents did this when I was super young when there was no work here, and yeah, its a pretty bad job, but if you want to see some of the best country in the world with great weather, they will take you if you have a pulse and show up, but after salmon season ends, thats it. To be fair, at least in Kenai, "room and board" can sometimes be "you can pitch a tent down by the windy coast and we will let you eat the bad salmon".
