I don't get why open world games are so popular, and I grow increasingly frustrated at myself with each one I buy based on raving reviews and forum buzz. Open world games consist of 99% unfun poo poo games and 1% cool fun games like Saints Row, Dragons Dogma and Shadow of Mordor that are good in spite of being open world. They'd be good regardless of the size of the map or the linearity of the story because they have cool fun mechanics for cool fun people, and there isn't a quest in sight. Quests are the reality TV of video games. They're the lowest possible form of entertainment, or at least tied with achievements for that dubious claim to shame. The poster child for open world games, Skyrim, barely even has a loving combat system. Coming to that thing from Dark Souls felt like a Kings New Clothes hoax. You're all just pretending it's a good game because everyone else does too, right? It's barely even a game. You just pick up tableware and put it somewhere else for 999 hours. Don't even get me started on the other big competing open world franchise, the Witcher. The Witcher 3 is a million quests with weapons grade exposition dumps attached, alternating between boring you to death with endless walks through the woods and endless walks through town to find quests. It has combat mechanics, unlike your other favourite abomination, but combat was more awkward than building a house exclusively with a swiss army knife. Playing the Witcher 3 felt like being strapped into the Clockwork Orange torture chair, forced to watch the Hobbit movies. What the gently caress, people? What. The. gently caress. My confession is that I find the shooting in the new wolfenstein and doom to be pretty lackluster. They're still fun games but the weapons do not feel satisfying at all to me, especially doom's shotgun.

I'll agree on Wolfenstein and even the shotgun in Doom, but the Gauss Cannon and Chaingun from doom are 2 of the most satisfying weapons I've ever used in an FPS, especially with the alternate modes like Chaingun's turret mode. I also think Doom has an advantage over Wolfenstein in terms of the gore level and speed etc., even when using a less meaty weapon like the shotgun or even the basic energy pistol, combat in Doom is constantly intense and awesome.

Plebian Parasite posted:Blizzard is probably the worst game dev on the planet, they don't do anything but turn good ideas from other devs into a sparkly manipulative garbage for the easily fascinated and they're almost singlehandedly responsible for the worst trends in gaming. Blizzard has only a vague idea at best on how to design a competitive game, but infinity money + dedicated fanbase props up their "ESPORTZ" scene well so everyone jumps on the Overwatch bandwagon. Can we stop making everything open world for no reason? Please? Most open world games are comprised of huge, boring worlds with nothing going on in them: IE: GAME OF THE YEAR Breath of the Wild. There's nothing as palpable as the disappointment you feel when travelling up a long staircase in an abandoned citadel only to find MORE Ganon fart juice and a beacon tower and... nothing else. GTA open worlds are cool because the game had a main mission set AND optional side content that you got through exploring the world. Most modern open world games are only comprised mostly the optional side content, and it's boring as a result.

Would people complaining about Breath of the Wild have liked it better if it had Dark Souls world design where every area more or less organically flowed into the next and every little alcove and piece of literal poo poo could be mined for "story" nuggets? Disclaimer: I am not defending BotW because I have not played it in any form.

Two of my favorite games growing up were Civilization 1 and 2...for the SNES and PS1, respectively. I liked Civ2 because I used a GameShark to get infinite money. I never completed a session of either game on PC because I was too used to the console versions to want to try. My favorite Zelda game is Link's Awakening because it's the only one I've played for more than an hour. Ditto for Final Fantasy and FF Tactics.

I don't get the allure of 'hard' games? Do people LIKE failing? I respect Dark Souls mechanically and thematically but I could only try something 20 times before beating it so many times before I was like 'this is somebody else's game' Related: I also don't get slavish devotion to the notion of retro. I mean, I like retro. But I like retro that takes into account the last 30 years of video game evolution. Games that are intentionally counter-intuitive just to evoke a sense of nostalgia are just...nuts. Developers are telling their fans 'remember when this sucked and was awful 30 years ago. Well with your support we can make it suck and be awful again so you can ruminate on your sucky and awful childhood' exquisite tea posted:My shameful confession is that I have a much higher opinion of a game if I can actually finish it, and for these reasons I believe Super Monkey Ball 2 is superior to the Witcher 3. I don't like Witcher 3 I loving hate Dark Souls The new Xcoms are weak, shallow copies of the original greatness I hate Blizzard games, yet own all of them I've never finished a lot of big RPGs, like Divinity 2, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun, Fallout NV or 4, any Elder Scrolls, etc etc Honestly, I think the last game that I truely loved was Jagged Alliance 2.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I really, honestly didnt care for Witcher 3's story. The hunts were the interesting part to me, it was nice to play as Geralt doing CSI: Novograd and tracking down beasties. All the crap about ciri and the Wild Hunt just went in one ear and out the other. The Bloody Baron was a good story, but mostly because it was a monster hunt with the 3 witches stretched out over several quests. Setting and characters are way more important than plot, IMO. Give me more loving around with Geralt and Dandilion in Novograd or Geralt and Yen and that one rear end in a top hat witcher in Caer Mohren instead of bs about the wild hunt any day.

From the ones I've checked out visual novels are just soft core porn, and you'll get like 2-3 choices to make through them at most? It's a shame because I think the format does have potential to tell actual good stories, just none seems to try.
