idk, to me it sounds like Combofiend is saying "We need beef in our hamburgers" and Capcom is all like "We could just use soy and beef flavoring.." So yeah, we're not getting 100% beef hamburgers, or anything close to it.

If MvCI was a burger patty, what percent beef do you think it would be?

"characters as functions" was something that sounded good to me a decade ago when i was first getting into game design poo poo and it hadn't occurred to me that people aren't loving rational robots. i want to be Gotenks in the dbz game because his character makes me laugh and his moves are really cool. will i play him if his style completely contradicts what i like to do? probably not, but i'm definitely gonna give him a shot just beacuse I think Gotenks is sick.

ya the other thing is you use this sort of stuff as language for gameplay. magneto doesnt really serve this functionality from say, a marvel comics -> mvc situation, but now we expect trijump magento. you pick magento if you want the trijump fast dude with some long range stuff. magneto is now the shorthand for this gameplay style.

srsly who wants to play this lamer?
I have no idea what the casual onlooker thought about the demo, but having someone like Dante throw his guns to a talking raccoon, as if they had some long-standing buddy-buddy relationship, just made me cringe. Or Dante being slapped like a little bitch by some Marvel robot. Or Dante looking like a meth addict in general.

Looked whack.

that interview is cool because it implies that marvel does in fact dictate the gameplay design of this game (and probably mvc3) beyond "you can use these characters"

we already knew that from mvc3 interviews where they basically had to fight tooth and nail for modok and sentinel

even outside of the context of a crossover fighting game using established characters, 'characters are just functions' is insane. people use characters for a variety of reasons beyond their functions. if i made the exact same character two separate times - same hitboxes, same everything - and one of them was a cute girl and one of them was an ugly demon dude, people would have different impressions of the character and would/would not play them based off those impressions. Not to say there'd be zero crossover but people totally pick characters just because they think they look cool/cute/hot or because they like their voice clips or whatever. When Adon was one of the best characters in SF4 he was still underplayed because he was an ugly dude who had super annoying voice clips.

edit: also this game, much like project x zone, totally misses what makes crossover games fun. the super robot wars games are badass because all the individual anime's plots are occurring at the same time, so there's fun cases of something from show a altering the course of the plot of show b, which alters the course of show c, etc. or like some all-powerful prophetic villain knowing the spoilers for every show. it's cool 'cause it shows actual dedication and knowledge of what makes the shows work. capcom's crossover stuff just uses the characters as props to tell a generic 'we all have to team up and stop the bad guy' story.

Not making a value judgement here on those things being good or not, but I think you take Dante more seriously than you're supposed to, because he would totally throw his guns to a talking raccoon.

People get attached to their "skins" too. Tekken did a ton of moveset "shuffling" but people still wanted to play a certain version of those characters. In the end it's just PR dudes having to work backwards to rationalize Marvel's and Capcom's bad decisions - I've been there, so I can't give them too much poo poo.

This is coming from Capcom, the company that gave us Ryu, American Ryu, Evil Ryu, Eviler Ryu, School Girl Ryu, Joke Ryu, and Slut Demon Ryu, all in the same game.

I picked playing Alisa in Tekken because she has chainsaw arms

Then I learned later that some OG's are salty about her existence because she's a missile limb shooting secret chainsaw waifu in a game series that normally errs towards more standard kickers and punchers but gently caress em I'm sticking with the chainsaw girl.

I mostly play female characters too. I like playing pixies in faster games, I like the leggy pokey characters in grounded ones and I also like pretty dresses. I think Marvel 3 was the one game where I gravitated towards an all-male team - and I suppose the bit of Marvel 1 I played because gently caress it Wolvie/Strider.

I don't think Capcom is "an evil overlord company" but based on these interviews I do think they are a completely full-of-poo poo company. Combofiend in particular is just a loving mouthpiece now who I can't ever trust after SFV.

Erasing Magneto by saying Nova has "the same jumps" is pretty funny though, I guess that's why he was inexplicably kept in the game? It's not like he's in the MCU. They just looked at who was already done and said "Nova flies and has a beam, put Magneto's poo poo on him" and called it a day. You could have given the loving triangle jumps to Cap Marvel and replaced Nova with an interesting character who isn't just "FLYING GUY WITH BIG BEAMS #5" but that would require effort so, SUPER NO

instead of spending all the money they've made on monster hunter on on masssively failed mobile games, perhaps they should have spent 15 years outsourcing beloved franchises to mitteleuropa and investing in real estate like konami

that's actually a really good point. In Injustice 2 even the bit players like Atrocitus or Captain Cold, and dead characters like Joker, all get mixed into the bowl and have some kind of part to play that's relevant to who they are. The bit about "it's just a Cheers reunion and everyone says hi" is the lowest possible rung they could hang to so the story, which they said "hold me to it, fam" is likely going to be funny but not in ways you'd think.

When they put out "this is absolutely not inspired or guided by MCU" that was also tremendous bullshit. I refuse to believe white-man with shades version of Hawkeye got in over someone like Doctor Octopus due to anything other than "BUT, THE MOVIES"
