I've heard that as well, but from the research I've done (google and quickly searching academic databases) it looks like a myth. The only thing I could find that made that claim was a clearly bullshit health guru webpage. I'm not a doctor though. Either way concussions are poo poo.

I remember listening to a lecture from a psychologist who works with athletes who have suffered concussions and he brought up an interesting point about how helmets can sometimes be counter-productive. Being that when an athlete is wearing a helmet they can feel they are more protected than they actually are and often go in harder and more recklessly than they would without wearing it even though they know why they're wearing it. Also that they can be a target for other players who see the helmet and assume they're more protected than they are and the other players will go harder.
