I got home from work around 9:15pm and saw a raid was happening at a gym near me. I was prepping to go, until I realized it's at a kids playground, and I felt a bit weird going to a kids playground at 915pm at night.

Welp I can't really do raids because I can't really handle sunlight.

But at least they substantially upped the coins so I'm back at what I was pre-patch, so... patch is now an improvement, if a modest one. It'd be a big improvement if this place had a decent amount of gyms.

54½ hours and still going strong. It's not a great picture, but you can tell it's not some obscure bumfuck nowhere gym. It's literally in the middle of town.

I soloed a two Bowser raid. It suggested 13 people which got me nervous, but nope. It was a 12k Exeggutor that I took down to half health with a Scizor, then a sliver of health with Charizard, Arcanine ate poo poo immediately and Houndoor plinked him with no effort. I could've done it with just two pokemon if I played better / was not so laggy.

A three Bowser raid with a 21k Flareon however was impossible. We get water pokemon all over here so I went in with a team of six beefy river bros and I couldn't get it down past a third health.

Did a third raid this time with another person. River Bros rinsed an 11k Magmar and the little DPS chart showed I did like 3x the damage of the other person who only used a Blissey.

I don't like the 50 coins a day limit. Maybe if it was 50 coins per day per pokemon.

I learned the hard way that you do not take on level 4 raids with only two people. We tried to fight a Snorlax, and completely failed, just ran out of time and got our raid passes eaten.

Snorlax is the only gen 1 mon that I'm missing but man is beating one in a raid never going to happen.

I wouldn't do this. Droves of people are complaining about raid passes right now, so I wouldn't be surprised if they somehow changed them next week. I'd expect at least one of these to happen:

  • Cheaper premium passes
  • More free passes
  • Sub-level 3 raids not requiring a pass
  • Returning the pass if the raid fails or you cancel
  • Having to use a pass only to get the reward items and/or to catch the raid mon

The current system is pretty broken since, if you're not coordinating outside the game, and play alone, you risk losing your pass(es) by stumbling upon raids you can't solo. As a result you're discouraged from raiding, which contributes to a vicious cycle of players avoiding raids and players who do want to raid not having enough teammates to do so.

At the very least, I'd expect the number of raids to be hugely toned down, or the tiers to be level-gated, once the feature rollout is complete. That'd help solve the numbers problem.

This just sounds like wishful thinking. They'll probably increase the payout limit to 100 before they lower the price of raid passes.
Also think of it this way: winning a raid battle gets you a level 20 pokemon with good IVs, similar to what you'd get from an egg, only fully evolved. Incubators cost 150, take a lot of time to get your pokemon, and you don't know what you'll end up getting.
A raid pass is 100, you get your pokemon faster and you know what pokemon it is ahead of time.

You get three mons from an incubator vs. just one from a raid pass, though. And those three are guaranteed to hatch, while you may lose your 100-coin pass investment to an unwinnable battle.

They don't necessarily need to drop the price, they just need to make passes a safer investment and/or more appealing. Make them last a whole day or something.

There's a huge step up between 3 faces and 4 faces. I got a 3 face Machamp which 4-5 of us nailed, and honestly I think could have just about solo'd by someone with good psychic types, while 4 face was a ridiculously strong Lapras whose ice beam just never let up. Still cool to meet new people and put names to faces, though

The new Gym system means my Pokemon actually stick around in gyms. Including one I freed up myself and thought wouldn't last too long. Guess other people propped it up, I'm still going strong 2 days later.

Though it definitely makes sense to space your Pokemon out timewise with the 50 coin limit.

You can hold one free raid pass and unlimited premium passes. You can get one free raid pass per day, so if you have one already from the day before you can use it and still get a free one, limiting the amount of free raids you can do in a day to two.

Up ta somethin'

The more I think about it the more well put together this update is and how targeted it is at ruining the game for spoofers (who manage to avoid detection via whatever Niantic is using to put the slash on their pokemon)

Coins are easier to get now for your average player, but more difficult for a spoofer because you only get 50 per day and you don't have control over when you get them. At the same time they added a new sink for coins in the raid pass system, which also keeps spoofers from just hopping from raid to raid to gather up tons of desirable pokemon. Additionally the new system gives people a way to gently caress with spoofers by feeding their pokemon to keep them from returning.

The only thing that really needs tweaking as far as I can tell is to have the raid pass only get burned when you enter the battle instead of just entering the lobby. Oh and the glitchly health bars in battle.

For the people who error out just as you get to the raid boss:

Apparently the countdown clock has to be properly synced to everyone else and not having this throws you out of the battle. I fixed it ( for my Samsung Galaxy S4 ) by going into time and date settings and turning on automatic time and date. Had no more errors after that and could kill a 1000cp Magicarp.

Machamp, Exeggutor (solar beam) and Alakazam are really useful now.

edit: Machamp against Lapras, Snorlax, Tyranitar
Exeggutor against Blastoise, Rhydon, Vaporeon
Alakazam against Venusaur and Machamp (which is L3 raid but really good tho)
