he's still producing at 5v5 like a 2c still and his fancies are as usual real drat good. i hope he does want to ring chase on the cheap, and i hope he signs a two million dollar contract to center the pens third line next year

IDK how I feel about signing a HHOF franchise centre still very capable of playing productive top line minutes for replacement player salary. Is he more valuable than arguably the worst player in the league? Hard to say.

On a similar note I am looking at buying a new car. I am thinking about a 1962 Jaguar E type but I don't know if I want to pay more than $6000 for is. I'm not sure it's much of an upgrade on my 2002 Pontiac Aztec.

The Penguins trade was bad but he didn't really get traded for a first rounder in the normal sense. He got traded for Sundqvist and the Pens had to drop 20 spots in a draft where they were going off the board anyway to make up the difference in value.

This is pretty much where I'm at with it. If they were going to go way off board with their pick anyways, then moving down is fine. As for Sundqvist, I thought he looked like dog poo poo in his call-ups this year, but I did like the way he played when called up last year. I think there's some potential for him to become a good 4c.

And I will enjoy Reaves smashing Dubinsky and Wilson in the face the moment they look at Crosby the wrong way.

The weird thing about Reaves is that he isn't noticeably bad. You'll definitely notice him charging across the ice to lay a hit and to forecheck well sometimes, but his underlying numbers are terrible. You're not gonna say "GODDAMMIT REAVES" as he turns the puck over often, but that's probably because he rarely has the puck to begin with.

You don't trade for punchmen, you sign them to a league minimum deal in the offseason.

You sure as poo poo don't trade assets to get one who is, by all accounts, a horrible hockey player. gently caress, you're trading away a young player (even if he is a middling prospect) and dropping 20 spots in the draft and Ryan Reaves is the best guy you can get in return? The trade was stupid, illogical and indefensible on every level and in every conceivable way.

I'm not defending it as a good move, I'm just saying I'm okay with it. It's not gonna kill the Penguins.

Right up until Reaves tries to elbow someone, they duck and he takes Crosby's head clean off instead.

Note: This is much more likely to happen than Reaves contributing in any meaningful way.

This never ever ever ever works

NHL players aren't scared of someone like Reaves exacting retribution for some poo poo, not with the instigator being a thing. The whole deterrence thing is a myth, but players will say "oh but I feel safer" but there is no difference.

Plus most of the shitheads that will really run a guy would then be more than happy to get into a fight afterwards. Their whole existence in the NHL is to not be afraid of fighting other guys like them

same. depending on what kind of contracts they sign their RFAs to and how much they cheap out on other depth positions the pens might not even need him to take a discount, what with having $19 million in cap space. schultz, dumoulin, and sheary will probably suck up half of that, give or take, and then after that they've basically only need bottom pairing defensemen and bottom six centers

Yeah those all make sense, but I thought they'd be going for it instead of trying to pull off the magic trade all your decent secondary pieces away and continue to get better move like the hawks have only been able to do so far

More realistic than him signing with a non-contender like the Rangers for 2M/year.

I think at this point the go for it stuff already happened the last 4 years of trading away 1sts and 2nds like they're candy in order to get Hank his cup. I think Torton sees the writing on the wall and tbh, if Hank doesn't like it, he can kick rocks.

I don't dispute this. At this point Thornton's in the "sign cheap with a contender to try to win a Cup" phase of his career. If the Rangers can convince him that they're still contenders (doubtful unless there's a lot of moves coming), I'd love to have him short term at that price.

Hey I think it's pretty obvious if our punchmans had fought nashvilles punchmans after Subban cheap shoted Crosby in the jaw, that would have solved everything, and PK would have definitely learned his lesson.

TBH I agree that enforcers are pretty much there for show. I'm more worried about speed than if a 4th line winger that plays 8 minutes is going to have any impact because he hits hard or not, and from what I have read, Reaves is not exactly known for his skating prowess.

I suppose it's possible that he could legitimately be a 4th liner, one that just happens to also fight. Considering his stats from last year, it certainly seems that may possibly. Be what he is shooting for.
