I really want that NZXT CPU cooler - I love how it looks in person. I may get one this weekend for shits and giggles. Was also thinking of moving my PC from my Corsair 400C to the NZXT H400 since it has better cable management but at the time I was on a Corsair kick.  to

Yeah I have mine on a 10cm high stand under the desk but if I didn't have that I'd be putting it on the desk as well, mainly because of dust and cat hair and stuff like that.

None of the nicer/hardwood ones from ikea are in stock within hours of my location. Basically looking for any kind of decent(I don't have any issues refinishing/painting/etc it myself), 70-80" long, 24-30" wide and most importantly reasonably priced. Some of the local places where I live are waaaayyyy too fancy, charging upwards of $30 per square foot. If I can't find one of the butcherblock/hardwood style ones, would I really regret getting one of the laminate/particleboard ones from Ikea(example: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70335655/#/00335654 ). They are even cheaper and I don't plan on putting a ton of weight on it or using it as a workbench or anything where it's going to really get banged up.

I'm picking up two 24x70 butcher block countertops from home depot today. They were on sale last week. Grand total is 130 I think. Will report back how they are. Also planning on starting the desk build but I still have a fair amount to plan out so that might not progress much today.

I have a bay window that's west facing, so it makes glare from the light in the evening a pain in the rear end. Same problem for my living room, but I might just get blackout curtains for that

Once I realized that none of my local Ikea's have those solid wood countertops in stock and might never have them again, I went back to looking at the complete workbench idea. Just happened to notice that the 6 FT Gladiator Workbench is on sale currently at home depot for about $245( http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gladiator-6-ft-Hardwood-Top-Adjustable-Height-Workbench-in-Hammered-Granite-GAWB06HWEG/206390573 ). Think that might be the lowest I've ever seen it at and even building my own I doubt I can beat that price by much, should I just score one of these and have them ship it to the store, pick it up and call it a day? Everything I've read about the Gladiator workbenches, in this thread and otherwise, has been nothing but praise. What do you guys think about the deal?

There is the option of sitting parallel to a window  The reasoning in ergonomics is that reflections or sunlight from behind the monitor cause massive eye strain. Obviously if you have (proper) blackout devices it becomes a basement situation and does not matter. But if you have a window that you'd consider 'lit', you should position yourself in parallel if at all possible.

Wouldn't sitting with your monitor parallel to the window mean you're looking towards it? Or do you mean set your desk further down in the room so your window is next to the desk instead of behind it?

When I was getting my table, I originally went with the Gladiator workbench. However I just didn't like any of the colors / stains available. That being said it was a solid desk. Though when it arrived it was pretty banged up with chunks of the desk missing from where it was damaged. It was then an absolute pain in the rear end to get it returned. Ended up going the IKEA route and I'm completely satisfied with that decision.

My eyes can't handle sunlight at all, so I always have the blinds down. I also use f.lux and weak light bulbs. I never have trouble with eye strain as long as I stay out of the sun. I remembered I actually have a (lovely and messy) photo of my setup. It looks brighter than it actually is though, must be my phone camera.  Gotta get a better desk without the dumb corner, but this one was free so eh.

'Have the window to your side' so it doesn't glare on your monitor and you're not staring directly into the sun, then you won't need blackout curtains and nullify the point of having a window

I discovered Burly Benches in my local area while craigslisting last week: http://buyworkbench.com/desks/ Those look like really great desks for the price, butcher-block style with 2x4s, plus the option of doing things like dry-erase whiteboard tops.

I guess if you don't have tools and/or a place to do some minor woodwork it will get you a pretty much indestructible (and cheap to repair if you do manage to damage it) desk, but it's also basically one of the easiest DIY projects you could do to just build something similar from scratch.

I'm mid move and getting last minute poo poo for my wedding done so it is a jumbled mess) has a heater on it, so a TV setup cant go there easily. Pittsburgh has this great scrap/office furniture/building supplies place called Construction Junction. We built out our entire office with Dorsks from that place, just a non-inlaid door on top of two filing cabinets. Run all the cable through the doorknob hole and you're done. Someone figures out how to trash one? Meh, $50 maybe. Need a quick conference table? Just put two of them together. Boss wants a fancy monitor kit that rises up? Cut a hole. I want one in my house but there isn't quite enough room. Only drawback, they're bulky though you can cut them to size and sand the rough edge if you want. Not fully cleaned up but the only loose wires visible here are the air purifier, the lamp and the webcam. Need a new set of headphones with a mic so I can get rid of the webcam since that's all I use it for.  For those really hot days.  Office is pretty bare so far, have a few things to put on the walls once I'm done constantly shuffling all the furniture to try out various setups. Plan on getting some sort of table/desk/thing to put on the left hand side of the desk to form an L of sorts.
