I think that was more of a Hail Mary play. Ruth knew that Debbie would be in the audience at least, and was setting it up in the hope that Debbie would finally go all in and embrace being Liberty Belle.

Fair enough. I only wish there was more time devoted to her to give more hints of it. Or maybe they did set it up really well, because when THAT happened, I was left as confused as Sam :v:

She was wearing a Liberty Belle costume under her coat.

I said FIRST champion. She pins Jenny and then butler-guy brings out the crown, so Zoya at that point is the champ. Then Ruth and Debbie do their angle with the challenge from the crowd and Debbie wins the crown until Tammé steps in and executes Sam's audible.

One of my favorite parts was in episode 3 where Bash was talking about how much everybody would love Machu Pichu. I think he's the only regular on the show that really was portrayed at understanding wrestling.

Britney Young just radiates likeable and sweet. I'm actually a little sad for her, because I can't imagine her ever getting a role where she's an rear end in a top hat.

I also like how her match with Welfare Queen ended. I guarantee Kia Stevens helped choreograph that and suggested the turnbuckle power bomb, because it's literally the easiest possible way for a non-wrestler to do that move.

To be fair, those are usually very common impulses for kids in that kind of situation.

Plus Justine hero-worships Sam. He's not just her deadbeat dad, she's clearly got this whole narrative in her head that he wasn't there for her because he was an Artist, making Important Films. And then she discovers he's a coked-up, alcoholic scumbag who uses his movies to nail wannabe actress bimbos in exchange for featured parts.

But during the live match she walked away before ending the match, and earlier that day she told Ruth that she was hoping to get back with her husband and her old life. They did set it up that way, but it wasn't until that moment with Debbie taking off the coat and revealing her costume that both Ruth and us know that she's now committed to her new life, not caring that her husband thinks it's silly, just like her soap opera days.

Man, this show is really good if we are debating a wrestling storyline inside a comedy show with hot women in revealing costumes and what that means for their character motivations. :psyduck:

They literally have Jenny, Dawn and Stacey confused as to what's going on and saying they were tricked, and then when Debbie and Ruth are arguing with Sam about the finish, they lay out their whole plan in such a way that it couldn't not be on purpose- as noted, Debbie has her wrestling gear on under her dress and also has her make-up and hair done a la Liberty Belle. (They also do a slightly altered version of their match from the first time if you pay attention.) I have NO idea why they thought that working the girls was needed to sell the story, but they apparently did it.

I do have to wonder if the showrunners realise that if this gets renewed, they not only have write storylines and jokes for another 10-12 episodes, but they also basically have to book a wrestling show that has stuff that can compliment those stories and still mostly make sense.

This, and also, when he's doing his announcing both before and during the match Bash is reading plot points off of the cards Ruth made for him. He's still reading off of them during their match. The only bit he doesn't have cards for is when it's Sam's addition at the end.

They have apparently seasons more of content in mind and have idea's about angles and content they want for the show within a show going forward, and intend to blend in those narratives with that of the wrestlers lives and how they influence each other. I think from that last episode Beirut is going to have an interesting second season both in ring and out.

I'm not debating the set-up. Just that I think it's more powerful if you take into account that Debbie was considering the option to just keep the coat on and go home. And that Ruth wasn't sure if she would go along with the surprise match.

Like, Debbie's entire motivation up to that point was that she had lost her marriage and housewife life, and was doing the wrestling thing as just a way to keep busy until she had a better plan. In the last episode she has that old life almost back, and she's still angry at Ruth, so she has no motive to go on with the plan.

So that's why I like it more that way, because then Debbie going along with the plan means not only that she's starting to get along with Ruth again, but also that she's doing the wrestling thing out of her own desire, to be in the spotlight and feel powerful, no matter what anyone else thinks, and not because she has no better option.

I think this should be somewhere in here too. It is the pilot episode of the real show.

If anything, the Netflix version isn't outrageous enough. It was SO over the top with the stereotypes for the characters. First match is at about 14min - Spanish Red vs. Americana.

"Spanish Red shes a hot one, and what do you expect from girl who loves bullfights? She loves hot sauce, baby, anything that is hot... hot peppers."

Weirdly Bash seems a lot more like the Wrestlicious guy than David McClane. McClane had worked in wrestling before (and still does today. She's this show's Crazy Eyes, for sure. I mean, purely in the sense that she'd be a write-off caricature in almost any other story, but here she's imbued with real pathos and humanity. Her character is gay, right? Based on the leg-shaving scene. Her friendship with Bash is probably about that...I don't know that he's explicitly gay, but it's a definite subtext and maybe they see similar tensions in each other.

It's pretty clear how much this show inherited from Orange is the New Black. Ruth and Debbie are definitely the white, middle-class Piper and Alex analogs that soft-sell you into the setting, before it branches out into the experiences of Cherry or Carmen or Sheila, etc. Only I'm interested in Ruth and Debbie. Show is great.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because to me this is a bad show that completely squanders the potential of its premise by taking a campy fun and nostalgic thing like GLOW and transfers it into a dank melodramatic world where every character is literally one-note. Not to mention in the writers attempts to shine light on racial stereotyping they created at least two characters who are more tone deafly racist than any real character that was ever on the actual show. Combine that with character arcs to nowhere, uninspired cinematography and direction, flat wrestling action (when it actually happens, for a show about wrestling....) and it feels like every episode is a Netflix series filler episode.

idk... I watched the actual pilot of the 80's show after binging the season and it has more entertainment and personality in the first ten minutes than this had over the entire season. I honestly am baffled because I have only heard and read good things about this show.

Don't worry. Once the shine wears off I'm sure a lot more people will agree with you.

The show touches on a lot of nostalgic notes from the 80's that people identify with. The opening credits were well done, and incorporating the right era music for each moments was great.

It was shot well, and I think a lot of the actors did a good job with what they had.

Other than that, it was mostly boring and some of the characters didn't seem real.

I don't know how much the show deviates from the real thing, and I don't really care. Hell, I was always under the impression that the G in GLOW stood for Glamorous, not Gorgeous. But, based on this: Bash gushing about costumes and that wolf lady poo poo kills any suspension of disbelief.

Every time the show built up enough goodwill with some scenes about other characters and their lives, it gets squandered by wasting time with another 10 minute scene of Ruth and her manic over eagerness.
