Preach season 2 what uuuuuuuuup Season 1 was good. It wasn't the same as the comic remotely, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Douglas Adams intentionally changed the hitchhiker's guide's plot in dramatic ways when he translated it from book to radio play to movie, because the same things just don't work in different mediums.

I'm binge watching season 1 before I get on season 2. So far, I'm really liking the show. However, is it normal to be really confused with the plot through the first 4 episodes? Or am I just not paying close enough attention? I'm hoping this is like Legion or Carnivale where I don't get it at all, and suddenly everything just fits together.

Watching S2E1, man it was a bit of an issue last season and it keeps going. Cassidy is amazing, Jesse is okay, and Tulip is unfortunately a constant buzz-kill. They've gotta start giving her some other material to work with. Also feel like they're not taking the you-know-who seriously. poo poo just starts blowing up and they shrug it off as "eh, Texas am I right?" that's... I know they're supposed to be devil-may-care badasses, but you'd think you'd be concerned about your own safety a bit more. I love Tupip O'Hare both in the show and the comics, but Tulip was a progressive character for the nineties. See also: Buffy, Vampire Slayer, The. Love 'em both, but they're products of their time that were part of bargaining while advancing. Not an end result.

I liked season 1 too, but I do think it had some major flaws. You already mentioned the slow starting, stop/go plot and action. The way they structured a lot of the season just killed it's pacing, there was just not enough of an overarching, coherent plot or clear narrative to motivate characters and actions for too much of last season. While there were some truly amazing episodes, with hugely iconic sequences featuring innovative and unique styles that also did a great job of building the characters up, there were also episodes that felt like a chore to watch, and an extremely tedious one at that. I'm prettty sure the week's wait between episodes had a ton to do with that, but the creative team that can reach such highs as the hotel fight, the ominously disturbing and effective psychological horror/western short film that was the Saint of Killers' origin story and reveal should be able to avoid this problem and come up with something to create at least a modicum of plot for the dull, "nothing happening" episodes, as well as build some tension in them beyond "please let there be more Cassidy soon so I can at least be entertained and laugh while nothing happens" The other major misstep imo is the complete, utter nihilism of the finale and in the wind down of every subplot leading up to it. Besides some of the elements in the finale feeling rushed af and out of nowhere, having the town blow up and everyone in it die makes what were already some pretty meaningless feeling storylines/character development so much more pointless in hindsight, especially when every character just decides to be the best, most ruthless psychopath they can be after the Angels' God secret is revealed to them. Not to mention the jarring effect of Jessie engaging in some Tarantino style banter with his two partners in crime right after this devastating apocalypse is visited upon the parish he was supposed to be the devoted and loving spiritual shepard of. Are we now supposed to think he never actually cared? It was just something to do after he gave up crime and was trying to figure his life out?

I don't think Jessie knew about the explosion in that finale, which clears up that issue. It happens after he's left town. Apparently we're getting a reaction out of him this season when the characters find out what happened. I've not seen this season yet so I can't really comment. As to your other issues, I understand them as a matter of preference, but the nihilism of the finale was the thematic coup de grâce of a season of television that was essentially about nihilism. The show's deeply sceptical of small town values -- the only thing that seems to have been keeping Anneville from a full blown Hobbesian state of nature was the belief (or pretence of belief) in God. Otherwise that place would have been a complete vipers nest, which is essentially what it descends into at the end. Jessie's quest isn't just an attempt to find God and punch him in the mouth for being a shiftless wonder, but it's essentially also about returning a sense of order and morality to the universe. (Of course, it's a bit more complicated than that -- the absence of God also allows certain freedoms. The mascots finally become a couple, and that mother finally decides to move on from her grief instead of spending the rest of her life caring for her braindead daughter. And Emily, who's revealed to have secretly been an atheist the entire time, just continues to live her life the way she'd always have done. Which includes, yes, occasionally feeding overbearing creeps to vampires, but the rest of the time she's generally a good person.)

In the strip/jazz club, a bunch of guys are watching the TV and it says something about the entire town being lost, and Tulip says "What town?" but is pulled away and doesn't get an answer. I don't think they know about it yet.

As we (well, some of us, heh) found out last night, apparently they weren't aware of the extent of the destruction of Annville until just now. It's only now starting to sink in and have repercussions (Tulip's family, etc). Still, you're right, it all feels a bit post-facto, and the town's sudden descent into nihilism didn't exactly ring sincere to me either—felt like they weren't even sure they were going to get a second season so they decided to end S1 in as audaciously goofy a way as possible. Now they have to kind of justify their way back into it. I should point out wrt the banter—if you know the comics you know this already, but Tarantino style dialogue was one of the hallmarks of the comic. Every time you turned around you'd have Jesse and Cassidy getting into a bar fight after discussing Charlie Chaplin vs the Three Stooges or something. It was pretty much explicitly acknowledged—Pulp Fiction was hanging in the air at the time Preacher came out, after all; it was what every writer thought the future was going to be. And I'm sure the show is trying to make its own nods to that texture, even if it doesn't exactly seem avant-garde anymore in tyool 2017. BTW, I don't know how many of you guys stayed for Talking Preacher, but there were a few pretty interesting bits in there, like Catlin openly talking about Herr Starr/Featherstone/Hoover and how excited they are for their casting (I'm assuming at this point they will all be affecting accents other than their own). "Bumbling psychopaths" is how he described them. (Also I was kind of struck by how freely Catlin and Gilgun et al talked about stuff like NAIRing their balls and being proud of their porn history. I know part of the "thing" of the show is to be shocking and edgy, but it sure is a sign of the times that this is what respectable panel guests talk about in front of studio audiences. I'm trying to picture some guest on, like, Carson even letting slip a hint that he masturbated. It would have been the end of the goddamn world)
