I've asked on the PS4 thread too, but I'd love to hear some feedback from people who are playing this on console. It's a game I've always wanted to get into, particularly after how disappointing No Man's Sky was. Also, which version should I buy?

The versions available are:

Base game: $30. When PS store updates later, you'll be able to buy the Horizons season pass for an as yet unknown amount of dollars. Horizons is pretty much essential if you want to have the "full game" but they at least give you the option to buy in stages and see how it feels.

Commander edition: $60. This is the base game + Horizons + a pack of spaceship skins from the Frontier store. I went for this as I know I was already all-in on this game.

There's also a Legendary Edition on disc, if you're one of those people who still want physical copies of games. Same as the Commander edition, but instead of the skin pack you get 1000 Frontier Points to buy some pretty princess dress-up options from the Frontier store.

As for the game... well I was hugely disappointed with No Man's Sky, where by the third planet I was done. Meanwhile in the last 3 years waiting for Elite I've watched hundreds of hours of videos while pawing at the screen and whimpering. I've just spent the last 2 hours finding out that the flying is actually really difficult, getting my rear end handed to me by the Eagle in the training mission again and again... and I am *DELIGHTED* by this. It feels amazing to fly, the combat is really deep, and it's an actual skill that needs to be learned. A skill that right now I absolutely do not have.

Edit:

The default controls felt horrible to me on console, I spent rebinding everything (and you can rebind EVERYTHING), and it feels really great now. I think the controller is going to be just fine for this game, but considering how bad I am at flying, I'm going to hold off on my plans to learn flight assist off.

Also if you jump in, add PSN: parkingtigersx and illsense set us up a PS4 community called SpaaaaceGoooons so we can all wing up and piss about in spaceships together.

I was curious about the PS4 physical edition, so today at lunch I wandered into the electronic shop next door to see if they had it. Now I have what I swore I would never have: A second account.

Then I learned that I can only use Solo-mode on PS4, thanks to me not having a subscription. Welp, it's not like my deep space explorer main on PC ever sees other people, anway. At least with my PS4 account I can play around in the bubble and explore the other side of the galaxy.

Is it something like once you have one you have roughly 30 minutes until your ship melts completely? Or do you have a few hours to check things out before you're too hosed up to do anything?

 Wow, I didn't expect my adventure into Elite PS4 to go wrong that fast.

For some reason I was totally surprised to learn that you can't give your PS4-commander a custom name, like on PC. So I, stupid idiot, of course linked my Frontier-account to my old dumb PSN-account. Instead of the new one I made when No Man's Sky confronted me with the same problem. This means the 1000 Frontier-points that where part of my package are now deposited on an account with a name so dumb I would rather die than use it to play games where Sony forces me to use that name as an in-game name.

Essentially, to use those points to buy paint jobs and other crap, I now have to beg Frontier to somehow move them to my second PSN-account. (And no, you can't change the names of your PSN-accounts. Believe me, I've tried many times. If you want a new name, you have to make a new account.)

Welp, now laugh at my stupid rear end. I have to waste Frontier support's time just because I put in the wrong email address first.

The default controls aren't great but the input options are incredibly flexible and once you get things set up to your liking the game feels just wonderful. I haven't played a lot of space or flight sims but this sure does feel like the best flying a spaceship in my life.

Apparently the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 4 (the blue one, not the red one) is confirmed to work with Elite on PS4. But only that one, nothing else.

If it's anything like the older T.Flight Hotas X it's a solid entry-level stick and throttle if you really wanna sperg out and fly your internet spaceships on a console. It's like 50 bucks or something.

I want to play that game it looks pretty sweet!

Overall the flying controls and feel of flying and the sounds and graphics are pretty fantastic but the underlying reasons in the game to actually go out and fly are pretty limited so its very much a make your own fun kind of game. There is a lot of repetitive gameplay. There is a goon group and being a part of a big player organization (there are zero community tools in game, no guilds, etc) can give you some direction if you're bored and provide resources in the form of help since a lot of poo poo is not well documented.

That said, console and pc players can't interact with each other cross-platform but all still affect the same "galaxy background simulation". The diamond frogs are mostly PC with a few xbox players and would be a good spot to organize some ps4 folks as well. even if we can't fly together, we have a loving amazing help channel and you can ask any of our new pilots how invaluable it is.

Stop by the PGS thread for the discord link and instructions if you do decide to hop in. Diamond Frogs are the chillest goon space guild. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3773251

I think the base game at $30 is a bit on the high side for what you get since there is tons of content and ship customization unlocked by having the expansion, but $50 feels like a lot to ask someone to jump in on this somewhat shallow, very immersive game.

I'm hovering over the buy button.

There are no cutscenes in the game. There's also no story, no overarching plot. Most everything is procedurally generated, to a fairly acceptable level of reality. The gameplay is pretty basic at its core: fly to here or there, shoot/scan/scoop/haul/steal thing, bring back to starting point. With some permutations along that theme. Sometimes you do it in a space buggy. There's an over-arching story, but I don't really care for or pay attention to it, and it has literally no effect on you whatsoever. There's a lot of grinding and a lot of RNG at the top end of things, but you can ignore most of it if you want to.

The game is really quite beautiful. There's lots of cool stuff to look at and discover. But it *is* procedurally generated so it can get a bit samey after a while. The flight model for the game is excellent, with a lot of depth and nuance. Each ship has its own unique character and there's no objectively "best ship" in the game. They all excel at different things. A lot of players gravitate towards the biggest fattest most expensive ships but they're not my cup of tea. I like small, fast, and cheap. The sound design is also loving amazing in this game.

I suppose what it boils down to at its core is this: Do you enjoy flying spaceships? Does the idea of flying a spaceship around a lot appeal to you? Then you'll like this game. I like flying spaceships. That's why I play this game, the go here shoot this honk at that thing is just secondary to the core experience of flying a goddamned space ship in space.

I'd say those are probably 50/50 gameplay that you'll actually see on a regular basis; and very creative use of the in-game camera controls that you would not normally see. But they're there if you want to put the effort into coordinating the perfect shot. Standard video game cut scenes are not part of Elite gameplay.
