HUNDU THE BEAST GOD posted:

That's very astute because there is a ton of subtext between Yukinojo and Nakamura anyway. It could have been as simple and obvious as an unconsummated relationship between a master and page but it comes across far more that Nakamura worships Yukinojo. The Yukinojo performance is spiritual; a demigod, almost.

Yeah, even not knowing Japanese at all, it's another one of those cases where the international title is a tad too literal, and the multiplicity of meaning and innuendo is lost in translation. From my wiki-research, apparently the original title Yukinojo Henge translates literally to Yukinojo Ghost, but henge also alludes to a change in costume or guise, so it can be interpreted as both a reference to stage craft as well as Yukinojo's illusory identity. The vengeance itself, not even referred to in the Japanese title, is just the superficial content of a narrative which is more about Yukinojo's intangibility, a spirit fluctuating between spheres of masculine-feminine, social-domestic, actual and formal. Obviously, Hasegawa is also playing another apparition, in the form of Yamitaro, who seems to represent the opposite social extreme of Yukinojo, a specter who is simultaneously fully independent and persistent within 'the real world,' but is nonetheless consumed within the same patterns of formalism and illusion. It nearly broke my brain at the end when he just climbs up the wall by breathing into the palm of his hand.

I'd have posted that on my FB instead of here if I thought that I could get a dialogue going, but my FB is divided between regime-sympathetic Marxists crying racism and blindness to third world struggles and characterizing the demonstrators as bourgeois-mobilized reactionaries (which sounds like a load of authoritarian bullshit until you've read a fair bit about Venezuela's political climate since the Bolivarian revolution) and anarchists making the expected argument about people's autonomous mobilizations being cracked down on by authoritarian cop forces (which also seems true). And both sides are backing their claims up with semi-bogus politicized press outlets.

As someone still struggling to puzzle out where on the spectrum they fall between Marxism and anarchism, and trying to avoid falling in with a bad crowd in the process, this is a pretty pertinent issue for examination.

I know Under The Skin was a popular film in CineD, is Michael Faber's book a good read, though? It's on sale for $3 on kindle.

I'm a funny person. I have a mental disorder and feel little empathy for other people. This has motivated me to study ethics and politics very carefully in order to develop a moral person, and to dedicate myself to pursuing justice for others.

I work with local politics and direct action in a hands on way, and I need to study events like this to determine my own political compass and observe the characters of my comrades. I am usually not quite so free with my peculiar perspective.

I know that I'm anarcho-communist, it's just a question of how that looks in implementation, how much of a state is necessary, if we can manage total prison abolition, how to deal with reactionary forces, etc.

There's also not necessarily anything wrong from maintaining emotional detachment while trying to get the facts straight in your head. Especially when it's something that's happening far away from you and doesn't directly impact you. Getting emotionally involved before having an solid grasp on the relevant information is just asking to introduce bias early on.

Well, if it helps, I don't think you will hang with the "wrong crowd" if you keep such an analytical perspective because a lot of it involves not second guessing.

The American left has a big problem with the narcissism of small differences, which is both a product of and a contributor to its political defeats. Best to stick to principles, focus on being productive when you engage with people politically, and not get caught up in all the bullshit surrounding events outside your own movement's ability to influence. (I say this as someone who has been a socialist in the broadest sense for almost a decade and has been consistently dismayed with the way these things are handled in those circles.)
