One nice thing about 'the sport' around where I am being hockey is that most Penguins games are streamed online for free (legit free, not dodgy free). I don't really follow myself but it's a good excuse to throw a party. Commercial breaks are just dead air for a few minutes but that's a plus to me instead of a drawback.

I couldn't really sympathize with earlier posts about cold calls for sales/scams/pyramid schemes until people mentioned getting them multiple times per day  Yeah, then it makes sense to stop answering all calls because wtfStill think it's weird how regional the phenomenon is though, my phone has a SIM of my own and one from the office. The office one gets filled out to a lot of companies, a lot of people have it and it rotated between several different people before I got it but I get actual Phone Calls so rarely that I usually don't even recognize the ring tone the first few seconds (everyone IMs/VoIPs through various services). I figured maybe do-not-call registries worked really well because of ~~EU regulations~~ or something but the UK has them as well? I'll get 3-5 calls per week I can instantly ignore since they're from the bumfuck Wisconsin area code I haven't lived in for years.

I have had the same cell phone number since 1998 and I get maybe one or two random sales calls a year in english, maybe 5-6 in spanish. I am just not popular?

The military likes to target the gently caress out of high school students to get them to enlist right after graduating. We're all morons at that age and a hell of a lot of people that join up don't do more than a single stint. A lot of them also go in for one stint just for the college money so I imagine they figure there's a lot of marks that just don't know any better and they're guaranteed to have a steady paycheck because they're, you know, enlisted.

They seem to like preying on soldiers (I have not been in the military, btw). Mlm scam, they try to sell you on selling insurance. I've had two run-ins with their rear end. One fellow I drank with (former army, served with Lynndie England if you believe the story) got me to meet him and his "colleague" at Barnes and Noble to talk about life insurance. Two minutes trying to sell insurance, ten more trying to recruit me. Dude started shaking about half way through, apologized after, never saw him again. Another idiot tried to run the whole, "wouldn't you like to work for yourself", spiel while I was servicing an account. Went all hand-dog after I asked if he sold insurance for Lincoln, and mentioned that my customer might not like soliciting in their building (a large supermarket). Guy said this was his part time gig outside of the air force (and going swimmingly, of course). I got the insurance fraud vibe, too.

I got kind of a funny robocall the other day (I work with a lot of freelancers so it's not unusual for me to get calls from numbers I don't recognize). Area code from my home state, which is not in the South, but when I answered, someone with the thickest Southern accent I've ever heard says, "Hello, is Gerald there?" I tell this person he must have the wrong number and he says, "Oh, well maybe you can help me -" and then he launches into a spiel about a police charity or something. I figured out it was a robot relatively quickly, I just thought it was amusing they decided to give him a Foghorn Leghorn-style accent.

When I worked in a psychiatric hospital I became the guy that explained to patients why finance, "deals" and no interest wasn't a good thing, it was always a full scale seminar making them understand that the people trying to sell them things were not doing it to help them out. On the plus side I got a good education on finding the hidden costs and translating the carefully written small print.
