You think that transaction ids should be able to uniquely identify transactions? That sounds like statist talk to me

For those who don't know, the transaction id is made of a couple numbers that are concatenated, something like the sender id, receiver id, and a timestamp.

The fun part is that the protocol didn't specify what order the numbers go to form the id, so someone could search for sender.receiver.time but not find it because it was published as receiver.time.sender

You could satisfy your ethics by directing bitcoiner money to something more useful that whatever the next 'legitimate blockchain entrepreneur' to come along does with it. Use what you've learned to get that money sent to some charity instead of some Randian. On the other hand, having something coming out of it that isn't a really sordid scam might serve to legitimatize it. Maybe have the money sent to whatever charity the bitcoiners would hate the most.

I <3 Alton Brown.
If you recalled my post from a month or so ago, you would know that I bought a $2000 mining rig (actually more like 1800 as I refunded 1 bad GPU immediately). Today I read a bunch of ill news about the future of polaris GPU architecture struggling against a growing DAG and decided to post my GPUs for sale on ebay. I bought them at 269.99, I posted them for $400 used buy it now, and they all sold nearly instantly. Obviously should have posted at a higher price, but whatever. What blows me away is that at $400, it will take ~6 months to achieve payback assuming 27Mhash (which according to things will be more like 22Mhash in ~10 epoch cycles or so). If the price stays constant without any big jumps/dips, and the DAG growth impact happens as I predict it will, and difficulty continues to climb, yeah it would be more like 60 month payback period.

Am I crazy? I mined 2.2eth in that month, and so have accomplished the dream of buying a bunch of GPUs, mining with them, and selling at a profit. A year from now, I'll break down crying when the hashrates never went down and the difficulty dropped and prices skyrocketed somehow. Still keeping my 2.2 as ether.

Good day.

An anonymous cyrpto millionaire is just a theory, if you actually turned it into hard cash the hammer's about to drop on your taxable property:

quote:

Instead of asking Coinbase for a long list of details about its customers who bought or sold bitcoin between 2013 and 2015, the IRS told a federal court it is now seeking information only for those accounts that engaged in transactions worth $20,000 or more.

The news will come as a relief to thousands of people who dabbled in bitcoin but faced the prospect of a tax investigation for failing to disclose they sold a small amount of the currency, or used it to purchase goods and services. The IRS launched the investigation in part because the price of bitcoin soared from $13 to over $1,100 during the years in question, and because only 802 people reported their bitcoin gains or losses in 2015 to the agency.

The main drug market got busted again after a 2+ year run, founder was living in thailand with 3 mansions and 4 lambos and has since hanged himself in a thai jail

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/07/report-alphabay-notorious-dark-web-drug-website-shuttered-by-feds/

quote:

AlphaBay, one of the largest Tor-hidden drug websites that sprang up in the wake of Silk Road, has been shuttered for good after a series of law enforcement raids and arrests.

The site mysteriously went dark earlier this month. Some users on Reddit suspected an "exit scam," in which AlphaBay's founders had shuttered the site and absconded with piles of bitcoins.

According to The Wall Street Journal, which reported the news on Thursday, police in the United States, Canada, and Thailand collaborated to arrest Alexandre Cazes, who allegedly was the head of the online operation. The Canadian citizen was arrested on July 5 in Thailand, the same day that two raids on residences in Quebec, Canada, were executed. On Wednesday, Cazes was found dead, hanged in his Thai jail cell.

The Bangkok Post, citing Thai police sources, reported that Cazes had been living in Thailand for about eight years. Thai authorities also impounded "four Lamborghini cars and three houses worth about 400 million baht ($11.7 million) in total."

Cazes' name does not appear in a search of federal court records, but if any charges do exist, they may still be sealed.

Ross Ulbricht, the young Texan who was convicted of creating and operating Silk Road, was given a double life sentence—which was upheld earlier this year on appeal. Ulbricht was also known as "Dread Pirate Roberts."

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to Ars' request for comment.

Gonna play devil's advocate and say that if we're basing Bitcoins performance as a long term investment (like most serious minded investors do) then even with these dips it's still well ahead. I wouldn't buy them even with someone else's money, mind you, but over a few years time they have increased in value....if not liquidity.
