My Lovely Horse posted:There's a Bill Hicks poster in Fiore's dressing room. So it is! Nice catch. EDIT: I couldn't find a tour poster or anything, but the man in the image is definitely Bill. Any Hicks fans know whether the poster is a vintage design, or something the producers of the show whipped up? Dave Syndrome fucked around with this message at 21:34 on Jun 27, 2017 |

I loved that last episode. Hit all the right buttons for me, with pitch black dark humor.

I love how fast this show moves. I'm sure a lot of other shows would have waited an episode or two to have the Saint show up, spend another 2-3 on "who is this mysterious cowboy" and the same again on tracking down Fiore to help. Not Preacher, because Preacher gets poo poo done. One thing that's starting to bug me a little bit was how a few days were apparently enough time for Fiore to become so popular that he not only attracts visitors from outside the region but also has make-a-wish kids carted to him on a regular enough basis that he's getting annoyed by it.

I think I kinda missed why Fiore was killing himself when he started on his casino hedonism binge. Was he hanging himself out of existential despair at first and only then realized he could Groundhog Day himself into stardom? Or was it his plan all along? It looked like he went and cashed out a bunch of winnings, then went smartly for the suicide option then headed right back out on the floor. But how does that help him gamble? Was he resetting his identity to back out of losses or something?

You are putting too much thought into it. He was depressed, so he 'killed' himself. He knows it won't take, but he hopes that it will. When it inevitably fails, he tries to distract himself with something else before eventually trying again. Fiore's suicides are no different than someone depressed eating a whole tub of ice cream.

precision posted:I loved season 1 a lot and was baffled when I found out the general opinion around here was that it was bad. The general opinion was overwhelmingly positive. What you're seeing is how TVIV works. After a show ends, the people who praised it fan out and then everyone just begins tearing it a new rear end in a top hat. There's a few exceptions but hell, look at the Better Call Saul thread right now. That show is great, everyone was really into it and now it's mostly people bitching about it. Again there's exceptions. The Walking Dead thread bitches about the show while it's on because it sucks, for example.

I'm only 3 episodes into the first season, but I was well and truly onboard by the time Cassidy and Tulip were introduced. I'm only tangentally aware of the source material so I'm going in pretty blind, but everything is ticking the right boxes, from the cast, characters, dialogue, visuals and pacing.

They weren't explicit about it until this episode, but DeBlanc was actually his lover/husband, or whatever the divine equivalent of true love was, and the two of them were probably Genesis' parents -- though that's still only there through implication. He was committing suicide out of grief, and then realised that he could use the repeated deaths (and then the generally nihilistic abandon that Cassidy encourages) as a way to avoid having to suffer. Hence the crush he develops on Cassidy.

I remember being slightly annoyed at how confused I was for the first few episodes, and how not a ton of stuff seemed to happen, but every scene was so good and weird that it was worth continuing to watch, even if I could figure out how they were related at first. The show does a good job of putting it all together later though.

The only thing I really hate about any of the changes to the 3 major characters from the comic is Jessie not having his "gently caress COMMUNISM" zippo.

You don't have to be exposed to the source material - they're keeping with the general gist, but striking out in their own direction (especially with regards to Tulip), which is perfectly fine - some of Ennis' writing made manifest would probably cause FCC to hire an exorcist.

I love arseface's backstory, I remember being a little confused throughout the first season because it seemed as though arseface had shot the girl and himself and as angry as everyone seemed at him, it still seemed weird that he was just out and about, creeping out the townsfolk and bugging the preacher, and not locked up. I figured maybe he was institutionalized for a time or something. But finding out what actually happened was so much better (and worse 😢) than anything I had expected.

The wide shot of Starr in his office being so similar to Odin's can't be a coincidence. Also, that Eugene scene was brutal. He just got rejected worse than any man in history and he's still trying to scoop her brains back into her skull.

That reveal of the Grail agents and Herr Starr was basically exactly what I wanted so I'm totally jazzed. We'll see how Starr goes from here, but they absolutley nailed the look of him, they didn't pull any punches. And the Grail also just already has the perfect aesthetic and attitude translated from the comic. As much as they changed other elements of the comic and it was good to adapt them, this needed to stay the same and I'm made it through the translation completely intact.

Eugene At least he's got his buddy Hitler for company now! With all the doors opening, I'm wondering if Hell has been abandoned or this is something that just happens regularly where everybody is let out and given the briefest of breaks from their eternal torment just to make it all the worse when they realize they have to go back to it?

Jerusalem posted:Eugene That's *exactly* what I was thinking when I saw the lady say that part of Hell was shutting down. On the one hand, its Preacher, God is missing, Heaven is confused and clueless; its entirely possible that Hell is incompetent. That would match the tone. On the other hand, its HELL. It doesn't make sense that they'd rely on technology and it would fail? It seems more likely to me that this is part of hell, its happening on purpose to gently caress with them and give them hope that maybe they'll escape hell, only to find themselves being lead to the next level of hell which is somehow even worse than the first phase (re-living the worst part of your life/death over and over) Eugene and Hitler: Adventures in Hell is the buddy comedy I never knew I wanted but god drat its so good. Can't wait to see who else is in there. And did everybody notice the sorta-subtle "Hitler!" audio when he appeared? That was pretty great, I think. Just in case there was any doubt as to who it was.
