Have you looked at the race three? Pretty flat from what I can see. I think 70% board, but it will be My next board for sure. In terms of speed, it's a wrist rest for me. Gotta be comfortable.

Only ever ordered caps from Massdrop before. Got kind of impatient waiting for some, I ordered the blue & white version of these: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/top-printed-side-printed-dsa-pbt-keycap-caps-for-usb-wried-mechanical-keyboard-104-keys/32813738267.html because the shape is intriguing to me. I think the black/grey looks great, but the blues would suit my white Poker 2 well.

Also I take back my whinge about gaming with Greens. Guess it just took a while to get used to them ... totally fine now. Interestingly I find myself "hovering" around the activation point when I'm anticipating a twitch movement in-game.

I still don't understand why a company would go out of their way to build an ergo-focused split keyboard... but still keep the typical staggered layout.

It sounds good in theory but it just doesn't work on high-res screens, the mouse movement is too slow at normal speed and if you turn up the speed then the resolution just isn't good enough (I think we're talking about the same thing with "uneven sensitivity). It was probably OK for 640x480, it doesn't work for 1080p. Paul MaudDib fucked around with this message at 03:13 on Jul 11, 2017 |

It looks good but a bunch of the keys aren't correctly labeled for my keymap and since these are SA profile, most of the novelties I got aren't the right row type for where I want to put them. Guess I'll either pay too much for a blank ergo set or just sell these all off and either pick up Nautilus (which has a really well thought out ergo kit) or another DSA profile set. What profile keycaps should I get for my ergodox? Kit should arrive in a month or two. I was thinking DSA, but I have no idea.

blugu64 posted:What profile keycaps should I get for my ergodox? Kit should arrive in a month or two. I was thinking DSA, but I have no idea. That should probably be in the OP... The problem with this question is that it depends a lot on personal preference but it's expensive to figure out what your preference is. With my ergos I've tried DSA, SA, and Cherry profile. DSA is great because you can put any key on any row and only have to worry about correct key sizes (1U, 1.5U, 2U), so if you're using a custom keymap it's much easier to move your keycaps around so the legends match your keymap. DSA feels best when I'm using a standing desk and have my forearms parallel to the ground or possibly angled slightly down but also feels fine when I'm seated. SA and Cherry both feel nice when I'm seated and my elbows are maybe slightly below my hands; the "scooped" row profiles (more pronounced on SA, more subtle on Cherry) feel more ergonomic than the flat DSA profile. BUT you have to worry about if that sick AYYY LMAO novelty cap is the right row profile for where you want to put it -- go look at the e.g. GodSpeed or Nautilus drops on Massdrop and note which keys are R1/R2/R3/R4, the legends on those keys will be your only options for the corresponding rows. If you're going for blanks, this doesn't matter at all but if you're anal about having the legends correct for your weird custom keymap, it can be frustrating. I also prefer the Signature Plastics (most SA/DSA sets) plastic feel and fonts to the GMK Cherry feel and fonts but lots of people are the exact opposite, so that's another expensive thing to figure out on your own. On the plus side, most cap sets are retaining their value pretty well, so if you can handle the hassle of some buying and selling you can try several options until you settle on something and sell the rest and probably break even-ish. tldr: DSA if you want a flat profile and the ability to put any keycap on any keyswitch. SA or Cherry if you want maximum ergonomics but don't mind having possibly mislabelled keys. Lawen fucked around with this message at 16:53 on Jul 11, 2017 |

Has anyone got any experience with flashing the firmware for keyboards that use firmware from input club? I have a whitefox and am pretty content with it, except whenever it's power cycled the LEDs default to 100% brightness. Why anyone would put LEDs on a keyboard with completely opaque keycaps (with non-standard sizing, so it's not as if you can easily swap them out) is beyond me and I think it looks gently caress-ugly, hence I've bound a key combo to turn the lights off, but I have to do this every time they come on. The only information I have on defaulting them to off comes from this post, which points to a file to edit and mentions 'compiling your own firmware'. I can't find any mention of how to do this on google - does anyone know how I'd go about doing this?

I have a Matias Mini Tactile Pro and I love it, but the keycaps are ABS, and now they're getting shiny and holding dirt. Getting PBT Alps caps is bad enough, but the Tactiles have nice dye-subbed Apple-specific legends, and besides they just look right on the keyboard. No point to this post, other than to vent. Really surprised they haven't made PBT an option or sold a set separately, it seems like an easy way to soak keyboard nerds for an extra $50-100

PBT keycaps need to be sold at volume due to massively higher costs for molding. Even wholesale retailers like SP only can get very limited runs going — the demand is just exponentially less (and thus come with astronomical prices). Your best bet are to harvest old keyboards that have PBT keycaps for ALPS stems. The Dell AT101 is one example that you can frequently find on eBay.

Yeah, they cost quite a bit more at the scales of folks like Matias. But Matias is already selling to enthusiasts, it seems to me like they could offer dye-subbed PBT keycaps as a side offering/upgrade, at a markup consistent with their expense. (I'm figuring $75-125 USD, depending on 87/101-keys and what, if any, economy of scale they could work out.) and enough people would understand the pricing and want it enough to justify continuing it. I suppose I could scavenge for AEKB2 caps on eBay instead of Dells...and looking on eBay, they're cheaper than a new run of PBT keycaps would be. Hmm. Hmmmmm....

Looking for a keyboard recommendation on newegg since I have some credit that will expire in a month or two. So far I've used cherry blues and browns but find them a bit too clacky so something with a little more resistance would be nice -- maybe reds? I also typed a bit on a matias mini quiet pro which I liked. I don't see myself getting into the custom key cap scene or anything so having those be replaceable isn't important. 10 key less preferred but not necessary. Usage will be 75% typing/coding, 25% gaming.

I got my partner an iKBC fullsize with browns, and then added some PBT keycaps (and o-rings) from Pheilcia. Same bad apt lighting/instagrammed photos: The set didn't come with media keys, so I got two WASD novelties that look like our cats (one's quiet, one's loud) instead: I'd been sticking with the default WASD keycaps but now I think I'm going to have to get a set for myself too... foutre fucked around with this message at 20:02 on Jul 15, 2017 |

It may have been rash to presume that they weren't working on PBT sets for anything else, though really I only care about the keyboard I have. Hey keyboard thread, I need some pointers on how to repair my keyboard. It's a das keyboard tenkeyless with mx blues. Some keys on the left side of the keyboard appear to only respond to long keypresses. Also sometimes it appears to "buffer" a keypress. So the first keypress yields no output on screen but the second gives me the "buffered" keypress and the actual second keypress. I've had this happen on multiple USB ports, different machines, MacOS and Windows, so I am confident that it's problem with keyboard itself. Also the problem seems to get worse the longer I use the keyboard. I have opened the thing, pulled all keycaps and cleaned it thoroughly (including internal connectors) but nothing changed. What else can I do fix the thing or is it dead? I am already out of the warranty period.

There's not a lot to do to fix that but you could try the PS/2 adapter if you've been using it with USB to see if it speeds things up. I wouldn't expect the behavior to change much but USB can be weird sometimes so there's a slim chance of it helping. If not then I'm not sure there's any fix beyond replacing the controller which isn't trivial.

I've been musing over the idea of building a ruggedized ultra-low-power PC for amateur radio using a small pelican case for a couple years now. Put an e-ink display into the lid, build a keyboard into the base, and throw a bunch of batteries underneath. Basically there would probably be some kind of a frame that sits inside the case, would it be viable to use one of those DIY keyboard PCBs and bolt it to the frame? I'm not opposed to using an off-the-shelf keyboard but inside a case I don't think I really need the keyboard shell, and I also wouldn't need a particularly long cable. I'd personally prefer something with a compact-standard layout but you could also do some interesting designs with 60% or smaller.
