Ink Master returns for season 9 of the hit tattoo competition, Tuesdays at 10pm EST on Spike. We've seen rivals battle, apprentices challenge masters, even judges collide. This season, it's all about the shops. Two artists from the same shop compete as a team through Flash Challenges that provide the advantage of choosing who tattoos what, and the Elimination Tattoo where they will face the judges and be eliminated based on their ability to tattoo a live human canvas. The winner will receive $200,000, a feature in Inked magazine, and the title of "Master Shop." BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! Every time one of these shops is eliminated, a new shop will take its place, featuring a returning artist who has competed for the title of Ink Master before, and failed. While they carry the experience of the competition, their partner is coming in fresh, and every other shop will have full knowledge of what brought them down. The elimination tattoos will be based on what got them eliminated, and every shop will form a new jury of peers in order to put one up for elimination. THE SHOPS: Allegory Arts of Florence, AL -Ulyss Blair Co-Owner/Artist, 12 years' experience - his favorite styles include traditional and realism, he joins the competition alongside his wife Eva. -Eva Huber Co-Owner/Artist, 13 years' experience - a gypsy spirit great at reading pepole, her illustrative flair balances Ulyss' bold style, hoping to put Alabama tattoos on the map. Artistic Skin Designs of Indianapolis, IN -April Nicole Artist, 8 years' experience - a headstrong artist with loud opinions, specializing in feminine and colorful styles, ready to bite back if someone calls her out on something she doesn't believe in. -Dane Smith Artist, 6 years' experience - claims he thrives in competitive settings, and enjoys creating tattoos that flow and fit well on clients' bodies, including designing the 2012 Olympic synchronized swim team uniforms. Black Anchor Collective of Hesperia, CA -Carlos Rojas Artist, 15 years' experience - prides himself on attention to detail and considers himself one of the best realism artists in the country, which pairs with his "tell it likes I see it" attitude. -Aric Taylor Artist, 25 years' experience - admittedly humble and his own worst critic, he enjoys realism with a twist, and plans to let his many years of art knowledge speak for themselves. Classic Trilogy Tattoo of Cortland, NY -Thom Bulman Owner/Artist, 10 years' experience - despite his tough looks, he describes himself as a big softy, enjoying new school and cartoony tattoos, and priding himself on his social following he hopes will help him win the competition. -Derek Zielinski Artist, 12 years' experience - sure he'll get under people's skin, he practices a holistic and vegan lifestyle, as well as traditional, portrait, new school, and realism styles. He promises his clean lifestyle won't prevent him from fighting dirty. Pinz and Needles of Baltimore, MD -Jessy Knuckles Artist, 5 years' experience - known for her wildlife and animal portraits, she actually enjoys doing cover ups and her favorite styles include black and grey and color realism. As a mother of one, she's motivated to fight to the bitter end to take home the title. -Allisin Riot Artist, 4 years' experience - confident her best friend Jessy will make them "the" team to beat this season, as she excels in the styles of new school, geometric, realism, and watercolor. The Marked Society Tattoo of McDonough, GA -Wes Hogan Artist, 17 years' experience - a kind, wise, and knowledgeable artist with a big beard you can spot a mile away, he describes his style as diverse and plans to let the others self-destruct before showing his stuff to eliminate the others one by one. -Mike P Co-Owner/Artist, 5 years' experience - laid back and funny, his charm is lost when someone crosses him, and he describes himself as well rounded with super clean lines. Thicker Than Blood of White Plains, NY -Jhon Campuzano Artist, 8 years' experience - feels the rough times he faced growing up helped mold him into a strong person and better tattoo artist, well-versed in all styles but with black and grey as his go-to. He plans to use patience and his ability to work well under pressure to bring the win home to his wife and daughter. -Babiery Hernandez Artist, 6 years' experience - very passionate about drawing and feels his artistry will put him above the rest, hoping to represent his family and make them proud as his inspiration for art. Tri-Cities Tattoo of Atlanta, GA -Bang Artist, 4 years' experience - began tattooing out of her dorm room before commissioning as an Army Officer, her styles include photorealism, portraits, sci-fi and surrealism, and she's on a mission to prove that artist of color are a force to be reckoned with. -Danger Dave Artist, 9 years' experience - the son of a preacher, he rebelled and became a tattoo artist with a laid back demeanor but a loud personality when needed. His signature style is sculpture and draws inspiration from African themes, wanting to prove people of color are known for more than just "urban" tattoos. Unkindness Art of Richmond, VA -Erin Chance Owner/Artist, 10 years' experience - someone who literally moved across the world to broaden her art and career, her skills in New Zealand trasfer to the States with her color illustrative work, and her passion is unrivaled in the competition. -Doom Kitten Artist, 6 years' experience - despite not tattooing very long, he feels confident in his neo-traditional style, and plans to use his skills as a gamer to pick apart the strong artists one by one with careful strategy. THE JUDGES Oliver Peck - Owner of Elm St. Tattoo and Original True Tattoo with 20+ years experience and world records in tattooing. He won Peck vs. Nunez and Nunez didn't. Chris Nunez - Partner in Ridgeline Empire, former cast member of Miami Ink. He has his own wikipedia page and Oliver doesn't. Dave Navarro - Founding member of Jane's Addiction. He likes to hang out. As always, a new season of Ink Master: Redemption premieres right after Ink Master at 11pm EST. Over a hundred artists competing means as many angry human canvases wanting redemption for the poor tattoo they got on the show. Plus, remember the Girls' Alliance from last season, consisting of Kelly Doty, Gia Rose, Nikki Simpson, and eventual winner Ryan Ashley? Well, Spike sure does, and that means everybody's favorite contestants are back! Coming this Fall, following this season of Ink Master, it's Ink Master: Angels featuring the top female competitors traveling the country to go head to head with some of America's most talented tattoo artists in a series of challenges. Whoever does the best will earn a spot on Ink Master season 10, coming in 2018. OmegaBR fucked around with this message at 03:25 on Jun 14, 2017 |

Episode Results: *Episode One Skill: Artistic Ability Flash Challenge: Carve a sculpture out of ice that represents your shop. Winner gets immunity from elimination. Winner: Ulyss and Eva Flash Challenge #2: Create a shop sign with custom lettering, by carving plaster and pouring molten metal into it. Winner also gets immunity. Winner: Erin & Doom Kitten Elimination Tattoo: Tag team a tattoo in any style using only a live reference of a hawk, snake, or gator. Best Tattoo: April & Dane Eliminated: Thicker Than Blood, Jhon and Babiery, due to the snake having a new school style that didn't meet the challenge, and a bad application that made its neck look broken. *Episode Two Skill: Fundamentals New Shop: Old Town Ink, Bubba Irwin & DJ Tambe Flash Challenge: Create art on a 10x10 canvas using only Post-It notes. Winner: Bubba & DJ Elimination Tattoo: Illustrative Black Work Best Tattoo: April & Dane Eliminated: The Marked Society, Wes and Mike, for poor anatomy on their tiger that was missing a tooth. The reinstated jury of peers picked Old Town Ink for their use of a magnum, feeling it was against the rules, but the judges disagreed. *Episode Three Skill: Detail New Shop: Think Before You Ink, Made Rich & DTatStar Flash Challenge: Paint a folded wall, one artist painting left panels and one painting right, so that two images are visible as you look left and right. Winner: Erin & Doom Elimination Tattoo: Tag Teaming Natural Disasters Best Tattoo: Jessy & Allisin Eliminated: Black Anchor Collective, Carlos and Aric, after two judges voted their volcano tattoo the worst due to the lack of detail on detail day. The jury of peers voted Think Before You Ink as the worst. *Episode Four Skill: Technical Application New Shop: House of Monkey Tattoo, Lalo & Picasso Flash Challenge: Create matching tattoos on the ear of seperate people Winner: Bubba & DJ Elimination Tattoo: Black & Grey Cherubs, on the same person, tattooed at the same time. Best Tattoo: Erin & Doom Eliminated: Tri Cities Tattoo, Bang and Danger Dave, due to both of their tattoos having several blowouts, and for being at the bottom for the fourth straight time. The jury of peers voted Think Before You Ink as the worst. *Episode Five Skill: Composition New Shop: Black Spade Tattoo, King Ruck & E.S. Flash Challenge: Translate scenes that remind the canvas to live their best life into ink. Winner: April & Dane Elimination Tattoo: Color Realistic Battles Best Tattoo: Bubba & DJ Eliminated: Think Before You Ink, Made Rich & DTatStar, due to their battle having numerous technical problems, rubbery swords, and a poor background. The jury of peers also voted them as the worst. *Episode Six Skill: Artistry New Shop: Boneface Ink, Boneface & Hobo Ink Flash Challenge: Create a piece of art by flocking, using colored velvet powder Winner: Bubba & DJ Elimination Tattoo: Freehand Tattoos, with one artist drawing, then the other tattooing. Best Tattoo: Jessy & Allisin Eliminated: House of Monkey, Lalo & Picasso, due to their poor color palette despite an interesting design. The jury of peers voted Black Spade as the worst. *Episode Seven Skill: Ingenuity New Shop: Basilica Tattoo, Christian Buckingham & Noelin Wheeler Flash Challenge: Inject a sheet of bubble wrap with colored water to create a design Winner: King Ruck & E.S. Elimination Tattoo: New School Tattoos, one artist tattoos three hours, the other does the final three. Best Tattoo: Bubba & DJ Eliminated: Boneface Ink, Boneface & Hobo Ink, due to two of their cats having a poor color palette, a result of Hobo's inability to do color. The jury of peers, including the team themselves, also voted them as the worst. *Episode Eight Skill: Consistency New Shop: Black Cobra Tattoo, Matt O'Baugh & Katie McGowan Flash Challenge: Tattoo replicas of loved ones' medical conditions. Winner: Erin & Doom Elimination Tattoo: Famous Works of Art Best Tattoo: April & Dane Eliminated: Black Spade Tattoo, King Ruck & E.S., due to their painting being the most inconsistent after they spent hours on tapestry rather than faces. The judges were deadlocked until Chris changed his vote realizing the tapestry didn't look like the painting. The jury of peers voted Allegory Arts the worst. *Episode Nine Skill: Proportion New Shop: Empire State Tattoo, Tommy Helm & Marvin Silva Flash Challenge: Mix your own plaster and apply it to a canvas to create a relief sculpture. Winner: Matt & Katie Elimination Tattoo: Full Body Pinups, switching artists ever 30 minutes Best Tattoo: Christian & Noelin Eliminated: Pinz & Needles, Jessy & Allisin, due to their pinup's face being unattractive, her skirt looking like meat, and both legs being out of proportion. The jury of peers voted Empire State as the worst. *Episode Ten Skill: Precision New Shop: Golden Skull Tattoo, Cleen Rock One & Aaron Is Flash Challenge: Using different drill bits, create a backlit piece of art made out of drilled holes. Winner: Matt & Katie Elimination Tattoo: Matching Portraits on Different Canvases Best Tattoo: Cleen & Aaron Eliminated: Classic Trilogy Tattoo, Thom & Derek, due to several technical issues, their portraits not matching the photo, and their portraits looking different from each other, compared to other poor teams doing weak, but similar tattoos. The jury of peers voted Allegory Arts as the worst. *Episode Eleven Skill: Adaptability Elimination Tattoo: Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with teams of four, one chosen artist from each shop, tattooing at the same time. Best Tattoo: The team of Tommy, Ulyss, Matt, & Erin defeated the team of April, Cleen, Noelin, & DJ Face Off: Freehand Tattoos, tattooed by the artists who did not tattoo from the losing shops. Best Tattoo: Bubba Eliminated: Artistic Skin Design, Dane & April, due to Dane's freehand wolf needing more anatomical help compared to Christian and Aaron's. *Episode Twelve Skill: Placement Elimination Tattoo: Armpit Tattoos, with one artist doing the left, and an artist from another shop doing the right, chosen by random order. Results: Katie defeated Aaron, Matt defeated DJ, Noelin defeated Bubba, Christian defeated Eva, Ulyss defeated Doom, Marvin defeated Erin, and Cleen defeated Tommy. Best Tattoos: Cleen & Aaron Eliminated: Allegory Arts, Ulyss & Eva, due to Eva's weak compass tatttoo and the feeling that their middle of the road performances had finally caught up to them. The jury of peers also voted them the worst. *Episode Thirteen Skill: Self-Promotion Immunity Challenge #1: Whatever the Canvas Wants, as shops get five minute interviews with each canvas, who then pick by random order what shop they want. Best tattoo gets immunity from elimination. Winner: Christian & Noelin Immunity Challenge #2: Whatever the Canvas Wants, with canvases doing a random draw, and then choosing shops based solely on the previous challenge tattoos. With only four canvases, the shop that is not chosen is automatically up for elimination. Best Tattoo: Erin & Doom. Black Cobra was not selected by a canvas and advance to the elimination. Elimination Tattoo: American Traditional Snakes. The style was chosen by the first winning team, and the subject was chosen by the second. Eliminated: Empire State Studio, Tommy & Marvin, due to their snake having odd belly scales that went different directions, and for Old Town outedging them in the week's tattoos overall. *Episode Fourteen Skill: Cohesion Flash Challenge: Blend a nude 3D model seamlessly with a flat 2D background. Winner: Cleen & Aaron Elimination Tattoo: Asian Deities Best Tattoo: Bubba & DJ Eliminated: Golden Skull Tattoo, Cleen & Aaron, due to having anatomically incorrect hands that stood out above their otherwise solid Buddha piece. The jury of peers also voted them as the worst. *Episode Fifteen Skill: All Tattoo Marathon: Each shop will design a tattoo based on a random draw theme, that every shop will then tattoo. Basilica drew Geometric, Old Town drew Black & Grey, Black Cobra drew American Traditional, and Unkindness drew Shop's Choice, choosing Illustrative Fantasy. Results: Katie won Geometric, Christian won Black & Grey, Matt won Fantasy, and Christian won American Traditional. As a result of the tie, the judges agreed that both Basilica and Black Cobra should advance to the live finale. Face Off: Tag Team Tattoos on Two Canvases. The first canvas is the shop's choice, the second is up to the opponent. Old Town gave Unkindness an American Traditional Hot Rod, and Unkindness gave Old Town a color realism full body raven. Eliminated: Unkindness Art, Erin & Doom, for their hot rod falling short as a six hour tattoo compared to the two excellent tattoos that Old Town produced. Old Town Ink advances to the live finale. *Episode Sixteen - The Live Finale Six Hour Live Tattoo: America chose one artist from each shop to complete a six hour tattoo live. America then votes on the best, the winning shop advancing to the final two. Result: Katie's tattoo was voted the best by America over DJ and Christian, Black Cobra Tattoo advances. Master Canvas #1: A thirty five hour back piece done in black and grey, with alternating artists between each seven hour session. The two shops that didn't win the live tattoo are judged, with only one advancing. Result: Old Town advances over Basilica Master Canvas #2: The final two shops are judged on their thirty five hour back piece done in color, also alternating, with the winner becoming Master Shop. Winner and Master Shop: Old Town Ink, Bubba & DJ OmegaBR fucked around with this message at 04:56 on Sep 27, 2017 |

First impression is that Classic Trilogy won't go very far due to big ideas they can't execute (and probably being in the nerd bubble.) Tri-Cities are already fighting, which means they'll make it until halfway at least, but it'll become a matter of when and not if they get eliminated. Allegory Arts strike me as top three.

ROCK THE HOUSE M.D. posted:Tri-Cities is terrible and should go home first. Oh I don't disagree, but this competition finds a way to keep the drama queens around and so far they're the biggest. It's funny, but with Bang and the others like her, with respect to her race and gender and ambition, those who make a big deal about having something to prove because they're always underestimated, tend to be the ones who end up being loud and obnoxious and (unsurprisingly) at the bottom of the pack. That Marked Society gator is awful though. Looks like a snake's body with a gator's face. Should have lost. So there are new shops coming in every week. Guess that's how they stretch it beyond nine episodes. Also nice to see the Redemption tradition of getting the craziest people to come back remains strong. This guy with the Bill tattoo is nuts. Have to disagree. That gator last week looked like a snake, and this tiger was just as bad with the missing tooth. Lines aside, if they can't draw an animal, they deserve to go. I'm tellin' ya though, Tri Cities will continue to squeak by with the second-to-worst tattoo for at least another few weeks as long as Bang keeps her mouth open.

Agree that the right time went home. Missing parts of an animal is bad: be the same if they missed a finger on a person that tattooed. Plus, Tri-Cities will only be around for so long due to their drama, and I love seeing more bad tattoos. Can someone explain what Old Town Ink did that caused the other teams to pick them? They used a mag? I don't know what that means.

A mag has like 4 parallel needles so you can draw 4 parallel lines at once instead of doing each line one at a time. Everyone else thought it was cheating, but it was just really smart.

Think the right people went home this time, that scene reminded me of a coloring book rather than a photo. And look who's on Redemption. You could put virtually every tat of theirs on the show and they went with the simplest (not that it was good either.)

That flocking challenge really showed some good artistry for the most part but looked really challenging. I liked how DJ Tambe told Bubba to stop thinking about tattoos and just do art but his whiny freak out made him look silly. As far as the elimination I thought for sure Bubba and Dj would go home for not doing the cover up. I'm glad Boneface is back and I like Hobo Ink too. They both seem like cool guys.

New school is one thing, but you bring a guy who doesn't do color, you're pretty much screwed. Unless you get extremely lucky, which they didn't. I really want to keep liking Classic Trilogy, but they keep becoming that shop that really just doesn't belong in the competition.

Returning artist Christian is right about Chris Nunes having no sense of humor. Nunes is such a bore. I'm going to miss Hobo "I have no clue what the gently caress I'm doing" Ink.

I laughed at Hobo being a tattoo artist saying he has no artistic ability. What a loving trip it would be to go onto the show and get such a bad tattoo. I wonder if they get real pissed about it even though they signed up for it.

Redemption was pretty good at first, but it's pretty obvious at this point they tell the canvas to go in as mad and insulting and swearing as they can to create drama for the commercial, and then Dave steps in to quell it. Although almost every new tattoo is actually pretty nice, and a lot of these artists do seem to work a lot better at their own pace compared to the competition.

Does anybody know if there's a place to see the flash challenge tattoos after air? The website has the elimination ones but I wanted to look at everything (because to my eye at least the one Matt and Katie did was terrible and I'm baffled by the universally good reviews when they could have at least talked poo poo in the judges' sidebar out of earshot).
