Trig Discipline posted:It's definitely a bizarre juxtaposition of cultures, but I can understand it. Drag Race is a lot more open about dealing with self-doubt and developing and defending a positive self-image than pretty much anything else in popular culture, and those issues are basically the defining crises of teenagerdom. And adulthood for that matter, but they're more acute when you hit them for the first time. So I guess from the teen fans' point of view it's a very positive thing. As someone who is probably perceived as part of the problem with the audience (I've always self identified as bi but I married a woman and we now have a baby on the way so I'll be forever considered straight by the world I'm sure), I always feel a little conflicted about complaining about the show's mainstreaming, buuuut... We started watching during season 2 and the show has felt so god damned bland for a while now. I fell in love with queens early on like Nina Flores and Ongina, then Sharon gave me loving LIFE, and led to my love affair with Alaska. And along the way there were weird-rear end queens like Tammie Brown who didn't even acknowledge the existence of a box, much less fit in it. Now everything feels so same-y and watered down and I fear we won't ever get another queen on those levels. It's taken the show from a must watch for me to a "oh yeah rpdr aired the other day" level and it makes me loving sad. Even the lip synchs feel boilerplate these days. I dunno that's my fourth of July rpdr ramble.

Shea Coulee HERSELF dismissed this lady two years ago on her own Twitter.

Wasn't it AB who showed up with RZA at a party Russell Crowe was throwing, acted such a goddamn fool and got violent to the point he had to pick her up and physically remove her? Like threatening to cut some girl's face with glass. Then she turns around and claims a bunch of crazy racist poo poo Crowe supposedly called her before 'assaulting' her, then everyone at the party was like 'nah that lying bitch is crazy'? Like drat girl don't embarrass RZA like that. e: maybe she's gotten better recently, probably not. I can't blame Shea for collabing with her, though. A track with Banks (as d list as she's becoming) could really help her push thru the mainstream.

There are a ton of crazy stories with her like that. I think a few months ago it got in the news when she was thrown off a flight for acting similarly crazy. She is also always calling gay men f*****s, claiming she hates gay men. She says she's allowed to say it because she is bisexual. She is awful, and I've lost a ton of respect for Shea for collaborating with her.

Toast Museum posted:Elaborate. I think this might be a reference to Banks making up conspiracies about Bill Cosby's rape charges. She's a piece of racist, rapeapologist, trans and homophobic poo poo. She's bi when it suits her so she can throw around gay slurs. Very proud of her blackness and is anti racist but bleaches the gently caress out of her skin (that is complicated though) and has no problem purepotrating racism when she needs to hurt someone. and I think she said something about only wanting to date white men? She played at a pride event and was supposedly humbled by the experience until she wasn't and started throwing around f words and t words again. There's is something legit wrong with her. It saddens me because I really liked her whole thing. I digged her music (I did not listen closely enough to the lyrics for 212 and missed how utterly homophobic it was, and it makes me feel like an idiot) and was happy to see a dark skinned black woman, with no rear end being all confident and sexy in the rap game. She was about to be a star and hosed it all up.

Nope, queens still do all sorts of work with him but never get called out or w/e for it. Which ... I don't want to go too deep in on this because it's a nuanced subject, for sure, but the RPDR fan base in general tends to let white queens get away with a lot more 'problematic' poo poo than black ones. I mean just look at Sharon Needles. She did and said a lot of horrible poo poo before getting her act together, but even back when she was calling fans the n word/etc people still didn't drag her as hard as they're dragging Shea for simply recording a track with AB. fwiw on the AB thing, I don't get the hate on Shea about this, period. Banks seems to be trying to do better now. Yeah she's been a piece of poo poo, but according to Shea they've spoken and Shea does believe she's trying to do good and be better. In the end that's all that really matters. Shea's called her out for being an idiot douche before, and I'm sure she will again if Banks backslides into her old behaviour in the future. Even if Banks was still being a psycho, I still wouldn't agree with all the attacks Shea has been getting over the collab. Like just don't listen to the song. It's not like Shea shares the same lovely views. If she starts to, then go ahead and be angry.

Trig Discipline posted:Did we already have this Vox article about teenage fans of Drag Race in here? It's pretty good. Honestly, every time I find myself being dismissive of the younger fans, I recall this sketch from Margaret Cho, where she recalls the queer representation on television and film. "We had Waylan Flowers and Madam." Found it: http://eventbeat.org/margaret-cho-on-gay-males-vs-straight-males-english-subtitles/ It's so true. She's talked about having yourself represented in popular media (or any media, for that matter) as an important cultural thing. I agree completely. Seeing someone that you identify with is awesome. There's been people from all walks of life, all economic statuses, every colour in the crayon box (that Ru wishes his dad painted with), and various degrees of self-doubt showing up. Knowing that there's someone out there who /gets/ you on that deep and personal level, and having [relatively] easy access to their inbox to let them know how much their work inspires you is awesome. I would have killed to have the chance to be exposed to drag at an early age, and have my parents be supportive of it. At that age (16~ish?), all the stuff where gay people were shown was decidedly adult, and my parents wouldn't let me watch because of the actual sex on the screen (Queer as Folk). Yes, the queens talk about sex (frequently), but you don't see a lot of them getting down and freaky on the show itself. (Their early porn tapes notwithstanding, but that's not actually on the show.) I stop and think of what a poo poo I was at that age, and remember what a messy bitch I was myself. Let them get their life, I say.

I'm doing supply teaching in inner London and was asking a heap of 13/14yo kids at a Catholic school what their favourite shows were as part of introductions. At the end, a really awkward and sad looking girl said her favourite show was Drag Race. When I praised the show she instantly perked up while the rest of the girls were brats 'Why you even like cars?? It's not like you own a car.' It was a nice moment and really brought that Variety? article a few posts back into focus.

I think people of every age and orientation should be allowed to appreciate drag. I get a little old fashioned about super young kids watching full episodes of RPDR, like show them some LSFYL sure. Pre teens and teens watching the show is great, to me. I mean it's censored depending how you're watching it, anyway. But honestly my friends and I were watching way more inappropriate shows and movies at that age, Drag Race is nbd. In fact I would argue it is a good thing for those lonely teens who feel like outcasts. Provided they don't start writing fanfic or shipping queens obsessively. I would have loved to have a show like this when I was that age. My issue with Drag Race going 'mainstream', or teens/etc watching it isn't the exposure it gets-- this show deserves to be huge amongst a diverse range of people. My issue is the way the show has changed because of it. It's been happening for a while, and some of it is production changes, or the way social media has changed how queens want to be perceived, but the biggest part is how not gay the show feels compared to earlier seasons. This show is gay af, but it used to be much more camp, much more shameless about it. A parody of reality competitions, with weird gay-rear end mini challenges where the Pit Crew is around as sexy man body for all you menses to ogle. Ru wandering round the werk room more often, gaying it up and being shady with the girls. I don't blame this entirely on mainstreaming, or straight or young people watching the show. It could be a more internal problem with WoW's current production staff, for all I know. But! With the show somehow gaining more viewers every year, despite being like ten years old, and with the next season being the first actual season filmed while now on VH1, I'm curious and lowkey worried that it's going to be an even more sanitized version than the already different one we've had for a few years now. fake edit: i'm high and forgot to mention I do take issue with having a super young audience at something like Drag Con. Like little kids wandering around the lube kiosks and porn related poo poo and actors etc, super weird. also weird: taking your kid to a gay bar in the middle of the night and waiting round outside for the show to end so y'all can meet a queen.

Yeah, it's weird. Like I love the idea of kids celebrating LGBT events with their parents, but surely there are more appropriate venues? If there aren't, maybe there should be. The parades are always good, and there are some drag events/etc held during the day a lot of the time. But I can't think of much else I would feel appropriate taking small children to. Like I'm from Canada and we're pretty lax about nudity and sex here. Like my parents never cared about me seeing it in movies, unless it was like a raunchy sex comedy or something, or overly violent. But there's still an appropriate age cutoff imho. If your pre teen sees a naked body, whatever. But kids in the single digits idk maybe wait.
