So my local GW manager did a fairly wicked thing on the weekend.

All the regulars who were hanging about were challenged to paint one of the 'Learn2Paint' Bigmars in a unique chapter. The chapter itself was decided by way of ONLINE RANDOM CHAPTER GENERATOR (seriously, click, it's a hoot)

8 people were handed the Bigmar, and given a couple weeks to create their abomination. Many brave people pressed the 'Generate Chapter' button and accepted their fate:
  • Desolation Tigers
  • Blood Avengers
  • Dancing Sharks
  • Grail Justicars
  • Sapphire Angels
  • War Brothers
  • Doom Falcons
  • Regal Consuls
...SOME rules were placed on known guys, such as the Desolation Tigers guy was not allowed to use a palette of Red and Black, as he does that all the time, and the War Brothers dude was mandated to have an exposed head. the Dancing Sharks guy very nearly veto'd his name but after some careful though decided to roll with it. One other dude joined in, but he rolled Thunder Wyverns and decided he didn't like it (Which is a travesty) as such he will create something on his own. The Desolation Tigers guy is currently agonising over 'how much tiger print is too much' for example.

Funnily enough, I am the guy who rolled Doom Falcons, and my submission has already been accepted and is now displayed in store alongside the 'pro painted' demo model for Dark Imperium.

So it isn't strictly a competition, but damned if it isn't super fun and exciting to watch in progress. If people are interested, I will keep people posted on the progress in this thread?

I'm going to run THE GREAT GOON CHAPTER CHALLENGE. Here's how this works:

1. You post in this thread declaring your intent to participate.

2. In response I provide a chapter generated from Space Marine Chapter Generator.

3. You either accept the challenge, or demand another name.

4. If you demand another name, I provide one and two randomly generated colors from the Games Workshop color list. The first color (or a similar color from another range) you MUST use. The second color you MAY NOT use.

4a. Anyone who wishes to try HARD MODE can also request to have a required and banned color without losing their epic name.

4b. The required color is a base from the GW Citadel line. You are encouraged to find a way to incorporate it into your model in a prominent manner.

5. You then post your progress by painting a Primaris Space Marine under the banner of your new legion. It must be a Primaris Space Marine. Seriously they're like 3 for $15 now. Any kind of Primaris is fine.

5a. Conversions encouraged.

6. Those who complete the challenge will be added to the POST OF HONOUR.

7. At some point we vote on the best one using whatever criteria the individual voter decides, and the winner gets... something. Probably a certificate of achievement.

Anyone interested in seeing who's signed up (and what they have) can check it out here.

++ THE RAINBOW COBRAS ++

A chapter of the Emperor's Adeptus Astartes, this chapter was raised during the Ultima Founding to participate in the Indomitus Crusade. They have rapidly established themselves as fearless and intimidating assault specialists, fairly demanding to lead the charge against enemy fortifications and act as linebreakers (or, less generously, as a forlorn hope). Though they do not scorn it as a tactic in general, the Rainbow Cobras do not consider stealth and infiltration to be worthy battle tactics - embodying to the fullest the Astartes credo "Have faith in your colors", they eschew trickery and cunning in favor of bold, demonstrative strikes, backed up by overwhelming firepower and the fiery pronouncements of their field commanders.

++ COLORS ++

This individual is an Intercessor Sergeant. He is wearing the unusual color scheme of the Rainbow Cobras Chapter: a slightly iridescent, dark blue armor, reminiscent of the carapace of some beetle. It is in line with the Chapter's general attitude: they wish to be seen by the enemy as they approach, and thus all the more feared in doing. Similarly, the usual gunmetal color of Astartes equipment - such as the receiver and barrel of the bolt rifle, and the vents of the Mk X 'Tacticus' armor's power plant - have been plated in a rich gold color, to cut all the more striking a figure as they approach. The Chapter badge - the head of a cobra, its seven belly scales in rainbow colors - leaves no doubt as to who approaches.

++ HERALDRY ++
Unlike the Codex Astartes suggests, there is no color scheme nor standard iconography for the Rainbow Cobras' various companies and squad types - making identifying individuals on the field somewhat difficult. There are hints in their heraldry borne upon their squad members' pauldrons. Both pauldrons bear a parchment-white field, representing the 'clean slate' upon which the Chapter can record its glories. The right pauldron is quartered, with each quarter representing a different facet of the individual's past.

This Sergeant bears the II sable of the Rainbow Cobras' Second Company. The bar sinister gules recognizes the individual engaged in gallantry while wounded. The checkerboard sable signifies the Sergeant's role in an Intercessor Squad, traditionally the vanguard and fearless spearhead of any Rainbow Cobras assault. The field sable appears on all Rainbow Cobras, and is appended with some image to reflect the achievement of some crowning glory by the individual. That there is none here is no shame; it requires an overwhelming feat, such as the individual defense of some important point against impossible odds, or the defeat in solo combat of some terrible foe.

Brawling Company

A successor chapter of the Raven Guard, the Brawling Company are noted for their willingness to throw themselves into what seem to be hopeless situations and emerge victorious through a mixture of grit, determination and dirty tricks. More than one great enemy champion has been taunted into single combat by a Brawler, only to be ambushed by an entire gang of Reivers. They will use autoguns, lasguns, xenos weaponry - there are no rules, there is only victory or defeat. The only weaponry they refuse to use are the tools of Chaos, which in the words of the Chapter Master, "'Would make things too easy."

The Brawling Company are most noted for their mastery of unarmed combat and improvised weaponry. Especially in the Dark Imperium era, where the light of the Astronomicon can be intermittent, the Brawlers are well prepared for lightning strikes to turn into grueling wars of attrition from lack of supplies and reinforcements. Their signature weapon is the Power Knuckles, a lighter variant of the power fist.

You can kind of see it here - I actually carved little furrows above the ears and painted them black to into the eyes, trying to go for a sunglasses look. It didn't quite read like that, but it still seems to have worked out ok.

Paints Used: Primarily Vallejo Cold Grey washed with Drakenhof Nightshade at the recommendation of a friend (thanks Tim), with Jokaero Orange washed with Sepia Serephim. The belt is some off-brand 14-karat gold color, the Power Knuckles and arm pistons are the same off-brand Brass. The kit bags are Vallejo Golden Yellow washed in Sepia Serephim as well.

The legs and abdomen are from the original Reiver model. The chest/upper torso is from a Stormcast... Prosecuter? The left arm with the sword is from the Reiver Kit, and the right arm is from a Chaos Terminator kit, with the original twin-linked bolter removed and replaced with a greenstuff Brass Knuckle. The lower back is sculpted greenstuff, as is the connection from the right arm to the torso.

STAR JUSTICARS

Lineage: The Star Justicars are Imperial Fists successors. Taking on a crusade much like their brothers, the Black Templars, they stalk the stars in search of the enemies of mankind that have visited grave injuries upon humanity. Worlds that were wiped out, sectors that have fallen, people forgotten - all are casus belli for the Star Justicars. They pursue enemy fleets and hunt down the enemy until their lifeless corpses float in the void.

Tactics: The Star Justicars primarily fight in space, ship to ship. Breacher units and close combat tactics are favored, as the close confines of ships often don't leave much room for tanks or artillery.

Heraldry: Purple in honor of their regal heritage, and the blue after the memory of the first world they avenged. A Khornate Chaos Warband descended on the Agri-World of Almundi Prime, famous for it's vibrant blue skies that seemed to never end, no matter where you stood on the world. They slaughtered the entire population, leaving eight great mounds of skulls upon the world. The Star Justicars responded too late to save the population, but they wiped out the warband to the last man, and scuttled their ship.

The Regal Skulls were the result of an experiment Belisarius Cawl conducted near the end of the development of the Primaris marines. The intent was to create a legion of pariahs; anti-psykers like those of the Sisters of Silence or the Culexis Assassin Temple capable of blocking the warp. If successful the Regal Skulls would be the pinnacle of Cawl's work; the ultimate defense against psykers, Chaos, and the Immaterium itself. Unfortunately the project was not successful as Cawl was unable to capture the quintessence that defines a pariah. Even the Adeptus Mechanicus are incapable of engineering the soul. What Cawl did produce was a Chapter that was more warp resistant than other Primaris and less susceptible to the uncomfortable effects of being in close proximity to Pariahs. The Ordo Hereticus, seeing the value in such a warrior, requested a chapter and the Regal Skulls were formed. As a small, specialized Chapter Regal Skulls rarely perform independent operations or campaigns. Instead they are typically found alongside the Inquisition, providing support for other psyker-focused forces against threats that may be outside their capabilities.

Steel Slayers

The Steel Slayers are a crusading chapter derived from the Imperial Fists, currently acting as an Militant arm of the Ordo Xenos at the request of Lord Inquisitor Grayson Macavoy. The chapter's original name has been struck from the records, and they bear the new name of Steel Slayers after a campaign of running battles against the Necrons. The Steel Slayers have fight with all of the zeal of the Black Templar cousins, but are not given to warshouts or grand proclamations, preferring the calm of a battle meditation to the fiery exalts of divine inspiration.

They arm themselves with a great myriad of arcane technologies from the stores of the Macavoy Conclave, and work closely alongside Inquisitorial forces. This extends beyond battlefield cooperation and logistics, with units of Storm Troopers, Acolytes and Marines training alongside each other in order to more effectively react to threats in the age of the Dark Imperium. This is clearly displayed by Chapter Master Ferrin Cisor, who utilizes Inquisitor Macavoy's two weapon dueling style in battle.

Colors used:
London Grey, washed with Nuln Oil.
Runefang Silver on the details and sword.
Vallejo Prussian Blue, washed with Drakenhoff Nightshade.
Jokaero Orange for the Eyes
Mephiston Red and Baalthasar Gold on the honors badge/chord.

The cape and tabard is a base of Ulthuan Gray, then layered back and forth with Nuln Oil/Ulthuan Gray until I got the shading I wanted, then I went over the high points with Ceramite White. It's the first time I've tried shading this, I hope it worked out. I admit, the lighting direction is helping.

The hammer was based in 14k Karat gold paint, then I went over it with Abaddon Black trying to leave the gold in the recesses to give a weave look. I was going for like, a spinning generator in the center with a gold turbine surrounded by blue energy. The blue is Thunderhawk Blue, layered over with Temple Guard Blue. On the weapon edges I hit over that lightly with Etherium Blue. Same basic form with the sword, but I had a base of Runefang Silver for it. The gold was hit with a Seraphim Sepia wash.

The model is a Primaris Captain model, with a head from the Deathwatch. The thunderhammer is from an Admiral of those airship Sigmar dwarves. The right shoulderpad is actually some part from that admiral cut that I thought looked interesting and cut off.

+++ THE ROYAL HORNETS +++

All citizens of the hive city Provespa grow up in the shadow of the three great spires. Home to ancient and once noble houses, by the 41st millennium the towers stood only as monuments to the debauched incompetence and corruption of the planetary government. Unsatisfied with his prodigious theft from the imperial tithe, the Governor’s greed eventually drove him and his councillors to consort with the ruinous powers for both otherwordly pleasures and protection from the Emperor’s justice. One early morning while enjoying the former, they found the latter; without warning an Astartes strike fleet arrived in low orbit. As squadrons of Thunderhawk gunships brimming with Marines made planetfall it was clear the Yellow Jackets had arrived to mete out a long needed retribution.

Known for swift and punishing surgical strikes, the Yellow Jackets were blindsided by particularly strong anti-aircraft defenses manned by a traitor garrison of Astra Militarum. Forced into an attritional siege of the spires, the Jackets found their smaller tactical force overrun by sheer numbers of traitor Guard and stymied by powerful emplaced guns. In their hour of need, help came from an unlikely place - bands of deserted loyalist Guard, beleaguered Arbites, industrial security forces, and even common citizens and gangers. These irregulars served as a valuable guerrilla force, undermining and sabotaging emplaced defenses, and proving a crucial distraction in the final assault on the Governor’s spire. Elite stormtroopers and even foul servants of the warp - summoned as a final resort by the doomed Governor - were drawn away, allowing the Yellow Jackets to complete their infiltration of the spire. With their leadership dead, the traitors panicked and fled, ultimately falling to the judgment of the Astartes and the dogged pursuit of the diminished irregulars.

Shaped by many years of privation under a corrupt government and the unusually harsh nature of life in their city, the citizens, gangers and guardsmen of Provespa proved their worth in urban combat. These qualities were not lost on the officers of the Yellow Jackets who reported their suitability as a recruiting pool for not only elite Imperial troops, but even as potential stock for new Astartes. In the years of the Ultima Founding, this advice was heeded and from the most ruthless, determined, and proud specimens of Provespa’s fighting forces were drawn recruits for the Royal Hornets.

The sigil of the Royal Hornets is a crown inspired by the massive towers which dominate their home, the tallest of which gleams white and free from corruption. Their customary armor is painted a base of common brown, banded with golden accents as both reminder of their humble origins and celebration of their newfound glory. Marines who serve honorably in defense of their brethren are given additional gilding befitting their actions. Gleaming purple helmets, shoulders, and aquilas invoke the royal heritage that has reshaped them in the image of the God Emperor, while their glowing red lenses speak to the ferocity with which they dole out his will.

This guy is inspired by the brown-gold coloration of a Japanese Giant Hornet, with a metallic purple component recommended by Beer (who ended up rocking metallic purple, too, which is awesome). My edge highlighting is a little dodgy, and my hacked together transfers are a little uneven but overall this guy was a ton of fun to do!

Particularly observant members of the Inquisition question the Bees' secrecy and their convenient lack of documentation in the Administratum archives. Currently Inquisitor Hari and staff are drafting a thorough report on this chapter's actions, but the Astartes are loathe to surrender sovereignty to outside powers, and an Inquisitorial writ has been requested. =====REDEMPTORISTINE PROJECT=====
================][=================

Primary Chapter Designation: Striking Sisters of the Most Holy Redeemer
Secondary Chapter Designation: Redemptoristines
Founding Date: REDACTED
Founding Chapter: REDACTED

Project Description: The Redemptoristine Project seeks to create a secret force to counterbalance the growing influence of Roboute Guilliman and the resurgent Adeptus Astartes in general to preempt any attempt at seizing control of the Imperium or a constituent part thereof. To that end, agents within the Adeptus Mechanicus have infiltrated Belisarius Cawl's research team and forwarded his Primaris Marine project data along with a gene-seed samples to jump start the creation of a new chapter. However, the only gene-seed sample which could be acquired was from the REDACTED legion. However, despite the risks it was decided to use this sample. With the aid of select, trusted Apothecaries from conclave-allied chapters, attempts were made to create a new chapter without the involvement of the wider Imperium. Early experiments failed, however at the request of Heretek Interrogator Fulgar Yar an attempt was made to implant the gene-seed into a seemingly compatible member of the Order of the Sacred Light.

The implantation process was completed without incident, and the result was a soldier with the fighting capability of a Primaris Marine with the faith and loyalty of a Sister of Battle. Recruit of further members was made simpler by utilizing the existing network of the Sisters of Battle, along with the fact that female applicants are thus far ignored in the recruitment process of the Adeptus Astartes. In battle armor there is no physical distinction between a Redemptoristine versus a Primaris Marine from the Adeptus Astartes, and thus hiding in plain sight has been remarkably successful.

Interrogator's Note: An unexpected result of the implantation process is an unusually large number of initiates have had dormant psyker abilities become active. This is theorized to be because of the use of REDACTED gene-seed. Sending these initiates to Terra for sanctioning is impossible, however as a former instructor of the Adeptus Astronomica and Astropath, Senior Interrogator Daren Andser has formed an independent Librarium order under his supervision.

Primary Colors: Layers of Khorne Red, Mephiston Red, Evil Suns Red and washed with Carroburg Scarlet for the main armor. The cloak is a bunch of layers of Temple Guard blue. My primary focus for this was learning how to use thin layers of paint to get smooth surfaces. The whites are Ulthuan Grey raised up to Ceramite White. The silver on the sword is just Vallejo Metal Medium because I liked how it looked once I put it on there. The sword blade is Baalthazar Gold washed with Druchii Violet. It doesn't show up was well in the pictures, but it has a very interesting marbling pattern that looks warpy enough to be a force weapon. There are some Daemonette Hide cables, and there is a line of Daemonette hide around the edge of the sword. The golds are... Delta Ceramcoat Acryllic 14k Gold washed in Seraphim Sepia because that's my favorite thing to do now.

No big conversions this time, I just did a bit of rearranging with the open hand to give it a bit more of "Well? What is it?" rather than sort of reaching out toward nothing. The color scheme was based on the real life Redemptoristine Nun Habit, and of course it made me think of pre-heresy Thousand Sons so I threw a bit of that in there too. I free-handed the symbol on the pauldron, a simplified version of:

One day I might come back to them and do some more work tidying them up but they'll do. There's only so much loyalist dog business I can handle before my mind turns to more Chaotic projects.

Raging Scorpion Complete:

The Raging Scorpions are an Iron Hands successor from an unknown founding. Like their progenitors, they value metal over flesh and upon achieving battle brother status, all marines are implanted with a prehensile "scorpion" tail that serves as as a deadly close combat weapon due to the poison it injects. It is common for veterans to their right arm entirely with a bionic limb/weapon. They are known as fierce close combatants and favor ambushing their enemies and striking hard and fast.

Alpha Barracudas reporting for duty!

The Alpha Barracudas were amongst the first of the Primaris Chapters to be decanted, and were immediately assigned to the protection of the Piscina system after the Cicatrix Malediction triggered an Ork uprising there.

Unconventional by Astartes standards, the Alpha Barracudas tend towards playing the long game in their campaigns. They make use of guerrilla strikes and assassinations to weaken their enemy, and only once they feel they are sufficiently weakened will they conduct full on raids to crush their foes. These tactics have led to dark rumours that their geneseed is based on that of the Alpha Legion as part of Cawl's experimentation, but no definitive proof has surfaced.

If you want to paint your own Alpha Barracudas, follow the below guide! (note that some of these are OOP and you'll need to find equivalents!)

Undercoat: Army Painter Plate Metal Spray.
Armour: Highlight with GW Runefang Steel. Apply GW Turquoise Glaze to the recesses and any ribbed cabling like the joints, then re-highlight the edges with Runefang Steel. This is also used for the Bolt Rifle's Magazine.
Bolt Rifle: Highlight metal areas with Runefang Steel. The Casing is painted in P3 Greatcoat Grey, then the whole gun washed in GW Glossy Nuln Oil.
Blue: P3 Cygnar Blue Highlight, washed with GW Drakenhof Nightshade and re-highlighted with Cygnar Blue Highlight.
Shoulder Rims: As a member of the 4th company this guy uses GW Emerald Green rims.
Gold: GW Retributor Armour, followed by a GW Seraphim Sepia wash, then highlighted with GW Auric Armour Gold.
Bone: P3 Menoth White Base. GW Agrax Earthshade Wash, highlighted with Menoth White Base.
Skin: P3 Gun Corps Brown, GW Agrax Earhshade Wash, highlighted with Gun Corps Brown.
Yellow: GW Iyanden Darksun, highlighted with P3 Cygnar Yellow.
Base Top/ Laurels: GW Goblin Green, washed with GW Biel Tan Green, highlighted with GW Goblin Green

I have finished my ICE SAINTS Bigmarine.

My idea for these guys is that their homeworld is basically Snow/Ice Version of Dune. The vast majority of the planet's land area consists of icy tundra and plains, with civilization centered around the poles where it is somewhat more temperate due to ~ mysterious ~ terraforming machines left over from the Age of Darkness. There is now an uneasy co-habitation agreement between the human settlers who were rediscovered after the Horus Heresy (and who supply men and materiel for Astra Militarum and Space Marines) and a Mechanicum detachment that was dropped there to figure how just how heretical the terraforming machines are.

This is the seventh dude I've painted since I took a really loving long break and the first not-30k-Death-Guard dude. Got to test some different methods and stuff, it was really fun. I might try to paint more guys with this scheme.

Also this is really cool.

Also also the RAGING SCORPIONS are amazing!

:frogsiren:The Great Goon Chapter Challenge complete!:frogsiren:

Created by Belisarius Cawl in the Ultima Founding, the Savage Hounds are an Imperial Fists successor Chapter*.
Like their namesakes, the hunting hounds of ancient Terra would herd prey into the hunter's sights, a squad of Savage hounds relentlessly advance on their foes pouring continuous fire into them, all the while in conjunction with other squads doing the same thing herds their enemies into killzones where they are rapidly cut apart in a savage crossfire.
While they are effective, the Savage Hounds are also absolutely ruthless. Anyone foolish enough to not give the Savage Hounds a wide berth might find themselves as the target of the Hounds's fire, civilians and allies alike.
These unfortunate souls typically have two choices; be cut down where they stand, or find that all their attempts of avoiding the incoming fire has pushed them into the killzone where they share their last breaths with the enemies of Mankind.
Even those capable of reaching the Savage Hounds over vox usually have little luck getting out alive. Once the targets are in their sights and a killzone have been designated, the Hounds will not stop their advance until either the last foe dies, or they themselves do.

Archmagos Dominus Cawl vehemently denies that the chapter's ruthless tactics and apparent inability to differentiate ally from enemy in the heat of combat is because of any tampering of his. And especially not because of any experimental cybernetic aggression amplifiers based on ancient, and forbidden, archeotech.

*Or so the official records claim.

If you haven't figured it out from the three clues on the model itself, or the heavy hinting in the description yet, the idea here is that these dudes are actually made from World Eaters geneseed. Between Khorne Red and the World Eaters' pre-Angron name being the War Hounds, this was the clear path for me to take.

Now, on to pictures! Click for large.
My apologies for the picture quality, even with some paper covering my work light the light is still a bit too harsh, and that is hiding a bit of the highlights.

This is my first time ever painting a marine, and also my first time trying to freehand anything.
In addition, this is the first thing I've painted in close to a year. It felt real nice to just do a fun one-off.

Created as part of the Ultima Founding the Ozone Skulls are an Ultramarines Successor that have been charged with guarding the Ozone Vault, deep within their fortress Monastery Ozone Mountain on the Planet Ozone III within the Ozone Segmentus. What vile artifact resides within the Ozone Vault is a secret held only by the Chapter Master Titus Marius who rules the Ozone sector from the Ozone Throne.

It's hard to see in the pics but this guy's armor is a dark metalic blue, I was trying to go for a deep purple metallic since I read that's what color liquid ozone is but I couldn't get it to work our right. I used Reper Tarnished Copper instead of Screaming Bell as the base for the Aquila on his chest.

What's the position on conversions? As long as it's still reasonably 1x Intercessor dude, all's good?

For example, people can headswap / add cool shoulder pads / pouches / detail provided at it's core it's still just a dude?
