Who knows, maybe I'll really enjoy it and start getting into all kinds of these games! It certainly cannot hurt.

Good, both. TBH I thought about getting art for my RAP but I've been holding off on it so far. It doesn't look as good with custom art as on the TE's cause of the big plastic black frame. Janky custom stuff can be fun too tho.

Badically any stick less than $100 is trash and not worth buying. It'll either break after 3 months, or suck so much to play on that you won't want to play. Pads are perfectly playable with modern games, and stuff like the Hori Fight Commander is super high quality for much cheaper than a stick. I personally use a stick because I just find it more fun to play on, and much more ergonomic, but I would definitely recommend saving up for a nice stick like a HRAP or one of the higher end qanbas, those will last you many years and if you decide you don't like FGs you can usually find someone willing to buy it for not much less than you paid.

If you're addicted to the feeling of learning and making incremental progress in something that's really challenging, you will really enjoy it. If you generally feel you're pretty good at video games and think you should therefore be pretty good at fighting games, you may be very discouraged.

Shadow225 posted:Honest question: why does everyone say SF5 sucks? This question seems to come 'round like clockwork but basically there are two groups of complaints (both valid): SF5 sucks as a complete game release - There were virtually no functioning game modes when the game came out as a full-priced game. No Arcade Mode, no Story, no fun stuff to do that's secondary to fighting other humans. None of that poo poo. - The online experience was a buggy and poorly-performing mess. - Because it was pretty much created as DLC cash register, there wasn't very much content in general, and the cost at this point if you want to own all the characters is loving astronomical. SF5 sucks as a fighting game - The cast is incredibly homogenous and each character basically has 1 correct gameplan. You can't tell one Ken from another Ken; the characters are too strategically shallow to allow any creativity. - Good zoning is mostly nonexistent because everyone has some V-skill gimmick to negate fireballs. - Jumping is really good because dragon punches suck and anti-airs aren't very threatening, so mounting a good offense is simplistic and dumb. - Like half the cast can be losing a round until their V-Trigger gauge is full, then they hit confirm into V-Trigger activation into combo into super for like 70% of your life and then they win. SF is supposed to be one of the least "random" fighting games and instead high level SF5 feels like a coin flip.

How does the worst fighting game have the most hype competitions to watch, is it just community effort

Don't forget the continuous and constant gently caress ups at updating Capcom has made their games as service game be. One update installed a rootkit to all PC players (It was removed in the next patch but you still have to manually go into your computer files to delete the already there malware if you got that update). Characters are broken patch to patch and it takes forever for them to actually fix anything (See: Alex's time travel bug that rolled back versions of characters he was fighting to 1.0.0 which I think has popped up 3 times now and the first two times took them months to actually deal with it).CharlieFoxtrot posted:How does the worst fighting game have the most hype competitions to watch, is it just community effort People watch where the most players go, players go to where the money is, Capcom puts big money in pots so everyone that makes a living doing fight games has to play it. Japanese players jokingly call it Duty Fighter V because you just have to play it. ZenMasterBullshit fucked around with this message at 22:14 on Jul 17, 2017 |

It doesn't. I'd rather watch a lot of other games than SF5, and one of the nice things about Evo is that it gets people to watch top level play in games that they might not be as familiar with. But SF5 is the most recent release from the series that created fighting games (and Capcom is heavily propping up the competitive SF5 scene with $$), so if you're a competitive player looking to win money, that's the place to go.

I will say that the stakes being so high at Evo adds a lot of inherent tension and entertainment value to everything that happens there. SF4 was a really loving boring game but even I have to admit that there were a couple of Evo top 8s during its run that were really excellent to watch.

I don't have a horse in the race, and I'm new to the scene so I don't know what to look for. Could the homogeneous game plans complaint be applied to say, USF4? I thought homogeneous game plans were a feature of fighting games since characters have distinct play styles.

There's a lot wrong with SF4 but I'd say it was a bit better on that front. I might just be biased though because someone once told me I played "like a 3S Akuma" after a few matches in SF4 and it made my day.

they wanted to make it esports because they were cheap and saw a way to spend no money on it and make a lot of micro transaction money from it but they hosed up the whole way then they set out making all the characters into functions with ugly yellow hair

SF4 had a huge roster by the end of its lifespan and they didn't decide to make zoning suck across the board in that game so there was more design space to mess around with, even if the game had other isses.
