They look really cool but they're super frustrating. In my recent achievement run of the game I gained a new hatred for them. You have to really focus on the three points that UFOs change paths, keep returning to the middle UFO for more time, make really big turns since sonic can't corner for poo poo, and if you so much as touch the water you're hosed. Then again, every Sonic special stage gets frustratingly hard with its own systems for the last few.

I'm going to say my favorite special stages, based on the brief amount of time I have spent playing it, is Sonic Rush. It's like if the half-pipe was manageable.

So I didn't notice during the livetweets but apparently they confirmed the game is "of comparable length to s3&k". Apparently S1 and S2 Act 1s are both acts combined roughly together and then a new act 2. Not sure if this applies or how to CD or 3/K levels though. I think their levels were longer to begin with. Anyway it sounds like 3 new (Studiopolis, Mirage Saloon and "CastleMania") + 7 remastered zones or 4 new + 8 remastered? I'm leaning toward the latter since that's 2 from each "game" and leaves a fourth new zone for the final zone. S3&K has 14 zones but 3 of them are shortened so 12 is probably a fairer number. Exciting!

What I'd like to know is if they've said they'll keep pumping out new stages as DLC if the game sells well enough. Just give me an endless stream of new, well designed, sonic levels in a decent engine without superfluous new gimmicks please.

I just assumed the game won't be long enough for Hyper Sonic to be a thing. They claim it'll be S3&K length but I don't believe that at all. I'm still buying the game day one and hyped as hell don't take that as me being negative on the game.
