If you have any interest at all in top-down dungeon crawling, Crypt of the Necrodancer is good, runs comfortably on 10 year old hardware and is easy to pick up - you control the entire game with just the four arrow keys. I'd recommend headphones if you're playing it on a laptop, though.

Here's a nice trailer:

Keep in mind that the "additional soundtrack" DLC only means you get the soundtrack separately as MP3s or FLAC, the alternate soundtracks are available in-game either way.

The "patch" is basically redownloading most of the game with less asset duplication (on account of merging the solo + mp "games" together). I believe once it's done it reduces the install size by something like 11gb? Small consolation, but...

I think Square will eventually release it on Steam just like they did X remaster. Square are also releasing a better version of 15 on PC probably next year. Maybe at Gamescom they will confirm or make an annoucement.

Man, is Mafia 3 one of the most disappointing games I've ever played.

I was one of the people super hyped for Mafia 3 back during the reveal stuff. Everything about the look, feel, and era all stood out to me. While everyone loves their godfather style Italian mob movies, one of the more interesting periods I always felt could use some representation was the death of the Mafia/organized crime. When black/Haitian gangs and breakaway splinter groups broke apart most of the Mafia organizations at the same time the US gov started cracking down, which led to this vacuum for them to move into. There was also an honest joy at seeing an open world game with a black protagonist fighting in the American South circa 60's.

I also love open world games! And I love collectathons ( I 100%ed Mad Max and didn't get bored! ), so I figured Mafia 3 would be the game for me.

Nope, christ.

The actual open world may as well not exist. Outside of the same office/combat space reused over and over again across a zone for each of it's enforcer zones, you'll never need to go into 75% of the buildings in the game. When you do enter a building, it's going to be the same ( and I mean same, down to the stuff on the walls ) across an entire zone. If you need to bust up 4 union trailers, trust me, they'll be the same union trailer, in the same parking lot, with the same side building every single time. It's astounding how much asset reuse is in this game. While the zones look pretty and feel fairly representative of the times, you don't really do anything in them.

Actual side content might as well be nill. You can run "rackets" for your bosses which increase their earnings, which increases how much you make from them. Except it's always the same rackets. For the Haitians you go drive to the bayou and pick up weed, then drive it to the new racket you just got. For the Irish you drive to the bayou and pick up moonshine you bring to the racket you just got. For the Italians you drive to the bayou and kill a guy, then pick up the guns and drive them to the racket you just got. If you do this they become more "loyal" and also make more money.

Outside of that there doesn't seem to be anything else to do. You can collect Playboys/Nudie picks around the world, as well as Hot Rod magazines and tear up the occasional Communist Poster. But as far as I can tell, doing this gets you nothing but some boobs to gawk at. Oh no wait, there's also a loyalty quest mission path for each actual boss, where you......drive down to the bayou and pick something up then drive it back up for them, but five times.

For all the side content they "offer" this might as well be Mafia 2 again, with the pretty city but not much to do in it. Hell, I'd say I prefer Mafia 2's approach, because driving from home > mission > home was a lot more fun then this bullshit that's basically required to get the good endings ( because of loyalty! ).

So if the side trappings of the open world suck, hopefully the main stuff is good, right?

Nope!

Every main zone as far as I can tell has two main rackets. They all follow the same path. You find person attached to racket/watching racket. You get a hint on who to take out to damage racket. You shoot dudes in 3-6 places that all look exactly the same. You drive back to one of the places you shot up, and beat up a guy who "runs" the racket who wasn't there the first time you shot up the place. You can then either kill him, or if you've wiretapped all the phones you can recruit him. Oh yeah, wiretapping! It loving sucks too! You have to go collect these little things all over the game world ( there are 30-50 per zone! ), and spend 3 of them to wiretap a phone station you have to physically go to. There are usually like 9-12 phone stations in a district, so a lot of the game is running from house to house picking up their electronics to wiretap the neighborhood before you can even get into any fights.

The kill/recruit thing? Pointless. Every time it's the same animation, and the guys model looks 360 style awful. If you kill him, you get cash. If you recruit him, you get a stronger racket and make more money off it. But hey guess what, you'll still only ever get 30k/50k for killing, or 32k/50k for recruiting, so it's not a huge deal. Especially because you then have to go run the racket side mission to get it to max, and even if you killed the guy you'll still max out the racket by doing the racket side mission/driving down to the bayou. So it's this whole system that does NOTHING. It's just there to ?????????

And this is the whole crux of the territory control.

After doing it for the first zone/second zone, I was already done with it. There are 9/10 zones in the game. I can't tell if you also have to do this bullshit for the Bayou, so I'm just going to say 9/10. It's the worst but thou must bullshit I've ever seen in a video game. It's SR2/Mad Max all over again, but I actually enjoyed both of those games because the activity lock loop sucked, but at least the activities you could do were fun. Mad Max was just a joy to play, this isn't.

Which on that note! The gunplay is terrible! The AI will watch you gun down their friends in front of them and not even react. You can headshot with a stealth pistol an entire area and they'll just say I FOUND A BODY and keep to their normal patrol rather then look for you. If you get spotted there is some light flanking which is nice, but it takes FOREVER for the AI to realize it's seen you, give off it's "YOU SHOULDN'T BE HERE, LEAVE" ( even if you are murdering your way through mafia top dog hideout and they've seen 10 bodies ), and then think about firing at you. And then they also just stand there every once and awhile. It seems like they have a script to fire initially, wait, fire again, reload, wait and then fire some more, which makes them hilariously incompetent. 90% of fights aren't even fights, people just drop dead as you silencer kill the entire group. The other 10% of fights have them all running into walls not understanding how to play the game.

But there's still a joy to combat right? TPS gunplay even against braindead enemies still has a few quirks that make it fun. Except you basically never fight anybody. Enemies only spawn at designated racket zones, and otherwise don't exist in the world/don't fight you. You don't see enemy patrols. You don't see allied patrols either. You only fight when you bullrush into another racket mission and gun everyone down before they even realize you are there even though you are standing in the center of the zone killing them. Despite this being a "war" on Sal Marcono, I've taken 6 of the 9 districts and he hasn't even threatened me yet. Nobody has attacked me or anything I own. I've killed several of his family members to no response. Just two quick vignettes where he worries about his casino. It's extremely offputting, and makes the core revenge mission feel pretty awful considering the person I'm supposed to hate basically doesn't exist/do anything to counter me.

The story is also.......not good. Which I think is probably the most controversial/disappointing part. It's super heavy handed. After this interesting betrayal/intro the "Dixie Mafia" came in and just started raping black teenagers and yelling the n word constantly. Basically everyone was revealed to be racist except for the good guys I recruit. One of my bosses is basically pushing for armed revolution against the government. Lincoln Clay is also SUPER NONCOMMITTAL about all of this, and constantly brushes off the plight of the black community in New Bordeaux by saying it's not his problem/he doesn't care even as people are lined up against the wall and shot because they are also black, and Lincoln is causing a race war. There's also just a ton of lost? content in the game. As I mentioned Sal basically disappears after the intro, which means half the game is just beating up these nobodies around the city which plays to a far different narrative then the revenge. Especially since half these people don't even/barely work for Sal at the end of the day. The entire game switches to "Sal wants to build a Casino" and "I want that Casino" really quickly, which is baffling and not really anything that was promised in the trailers. It also doesn't answer anything about what happened in the intro, and makes the whole thing basically fall apart. Why would Sal want Lincoln to take over the Hollows if he was going legit. Why would he care about Sammy if he was going legit. Why would he purposefully cause a race war in a city he wants to build a casino in, to get tourists to come to the city. Nothing makes any sense.

The individual moment to moment conversations feel fairly realistic/well done, but the overarching plot is disappointing. It's well written on the small scale, but overwrought on the large scale.

I really, really, really liked the individual moment to moment conversations. The characterizations, the personal talks, the day to day stuff. But everything else in this game is awful, and I don't think I want to keep playing it.

The game is as gutted as Mafia 2 but in a different way. Mafia 2 lacked side content and Mafia 3 lacks main content.

Mafia 3 has the most grindy open world design in existence, even Mad Max is less annoying than this poo poo. Not only do they force you to clear repetitve map points as a huge part of the main story, but a lot of the side stuff simply doesn't even have any use - there are locations marked on your map like bars, alcohol stores that do nothing, it's mindboggling. I did enjoy the few proper main missions though, I wished they just...developed more of those.

Mafia 2 was more developed then Mafia 3.

Mafia 2 had an open world that didn't do anything, but the core structure worked fine. If I view it, and played it like a linear style TPS I could find a lot of enjoyment out of it. Could I tell it was gutted? Yup. Did I care? Yup. Could I still enjoy the story, characters, and gunplay? You drat well bet I did.

Mafia 2 had great missions. It had great gunplay. It had great action, and a bunch of really fun moments. For the 20 or so hours I got out of it, I enjoyed all of them. I left Mafia 2 thinking "this could have been GOTY with all that content still in it." but loved what I got.

With Mafia 3, I have an open world I don't want to do anything in. I don't want to loving get these rackets. I don't want to do these side racket missions. The side quests are repetitive and awful. The gunplay is trash. I've conquered 6 zones out of 9, and I've seen 2-3? missions I'd actually consider to be even close to resembling a "main" story mission in any other game. It's just the same cycle I don't want to do over and over again. It's awful.

Mafia 2 might not have had the best story ever, but I wanted to see what happened to Vito and Joe. In Mafia 3, I don't really care about Sal's Casino anymore. I realized I'm only playing to see the next bit where I get to talk to someone, and I still don't like half the people I talk to.
