How is this still at 84 on Metacritic? The game is fresher than fresh air! I guess the first wave of reviewers is waiting a bit before revising to 100. Strange

Up to A- in Rainmaker. That mode rules so much, I didn't play much of it in the first game since I slowed down playing by the time it came out. That was a mistake.

The brush is so-so, but the Octobrush is really really good. Great as a backstabbing type weapon, with good turf coverage. If you were underwhelmed by the first one, give it a try.

The regular ink brush is more efficient for turf coverage than the octobrush.

Rainmaker is also more interesting in this one since you can't do things like kraken escort the rainmaker straight to the goal. Granted that stopped working at high ranks in the original but at lower ranks you could be quite cheap.

I love this game but let's not pretend it's perfect. Netcode is still bad, no regional matchmaking, no way to check ping and the often ridiculed voice chat measure probably drag scores down.

On the other hand, they're game journalists so who cares?

Absolutely, it’s a fun game, so getting into a genital measuring contest about how many points it has is ridiculous, as is pretending Nintendo has figured out online games. They clearly haven’t, but the game succeeds in spite of that.

Review scores direct affect success and popularity to a certain degree. Splatoon 2 deserves great scores and a billion copies sold.

I get your point and mostly agree but honestly that 9X is a pretty important visual and number to slap on promotional images. From what I've heard the game is selling fine though.

inferis
Dec 30, 2003

i think review scores would be a whole lot more useful if they actually used all the numbers instead of anything below 8 meaning it's garbage

also the way metacritic/rotten tomatoes is used as a way to judge something is so bad because it means whatever is blandly appealing to the widest audience is going to get high scores rather than something that might possibly be very narrowly and specifically 'my poo poo'

Shaped like a friend

Today has just been depressing. It really is impossible to carry in turf war if your teammates don't know what they're doing or if they just play follow the leader. Tonight I've been stuck in games where I'll go up Moray Towers on the enemy side and sneak by- take out the usual dude that spots me... only for the ENTIRETY OF MY TEAM to squid jump to me for some bizarre reason and race to the top leaving our side and the middle totally unprotected.

Fine Inkblot I'll roll around to the enemy side and spawn camp a little while covering turf near their base. I make sure the middle is clear but one enemy sneaks by. "My team can handle one guy right?"

Wrong, that one guy is just making GBS threads on them and I was a fool to think they could handle themselves in a 3v1. By the time I get over there and splat the dude the entire enemy team is now free and each one of them is capable of wiping the 3 other goofs on my team by themselves.

Just insanely insanely frustrating :sigh:

E: And for the record I'm fine with losing and I acknowledge I'm pretty mediocre in PVP modes usually but I'd really like to feel like I had a team capable of helping me out sometimes. I know a handful of them are probably kids but maan.

I really don't get how you can get bent out of shape over turf war. Yeah, it sucks to lose a lot but...its loving turf war. Literal children are playing that mode for the first time. I don't go into that expecting to have fair and balanced matches. Frankly I'll be happy just with coming in first on my own team.

Though I might just be rusty but I'm having trouble getting high scores with the brushes. Its a struggle to break 1000p, but when I was using the splattershot jr. I was surpassing that pretty easily.

Don't take Turf War seriously as a competitive person myself I know that's not easy to do as losing NEVER feels good. If you're going to play Turf War set a different objective for yourself like practicing a new weapon or some poo poo like that. Def take it seriously when there's a Splatfest going down though.

Turf War fucks me up because I hate seeing those little miniscule un-inked (or wrong colored) spots. I can't handle bald spots on an otherwise beautiful splatscape, and end up spending a dumb amount of time just splatting little touch-ups.

Unless I play aeromark in which case, gently caress it everything's getting inked.

Pretty annoyed I can't just change it myself ingame but whatever.

Do the various stats on gear matter at all? I mean, I have a very specific look I'm going for but don't know if I should be stacking ink resistance or something.

To be honest, that's about what I would give it right now. It's a solid game but the matchmaking is hot steaming garbage and nagging issues like Salmon Run being a limited time event and some control issues take it out of the 90+ bracket.

Most of those issues though can be fixed with updates so here's to hoping Nintendo put some work in.

So every piece of equipment has a major ability (the default unlock) and 1-3 secondary abilities that is a 1/3rd of the power of a major. So if you have three of the same secondary it adds up to one major.

Some unlock abilities, like the stealth jump or the side roll. Others boost things like damage, ink usage, defense, etc by 5-10% ish.

So is it going to make or break you? Not more than playing better will. But will it help you if you coordinate and stack certain abilities? Yes. That being said, don't worry much about it at the start, you can look as fresh as you want and fix it up later if you are willing to pay.

Ink resistance is pretty much mandatory for brushes unless you enjoy having all your mobility killed because you brushed up against a dot of enemy ink.

I'm not sure how much of it you need now though. Its not really something you can easily test.
