From mutual friends, I've heard that Tesla is paying him much, much more than AMD or Apple did.

If they want a solid Zen 3/4, the last 15 years' history suggests that they need him back ASAP.

I strongly suspect Jim Keller has a large long position in AMD

That said musk and Tesla are in a position to pay him a lot more

The best case (and most likely) is that Threadripper equals an 1800X in gaming for twice the price. The worst case is that NUMA doesnt work well at the OS level or games just don't play nice with it, and it ends up actually slower than an 1800X clock for clock. I don't think thats likely at all, but we will see soon.

HEDT (or SHED, lol AMD) is not really a gaming platform so much, no matter how desperate AMD and Intel are to make gamers think they need $1000 CPUs to play overwatch. For content creator types though, TR could be a great value.

Eh, the memory speeds on package look interesting. If Threadripper is as fast, then it should fare well enough. That said, I still wish for async IF clocks on TR2.

I wonder how much faster the chip would be if the IF was pegged to the max.

I'm not sure that'd really help, since theoretical max is 512GB/s IIRC. You could do a quarter of that and probably reap 90% of the benefit.

Like, I'll giggle like an idiot if all AMD has to do to get 15% IPC gains is set the divider between IF and the IMC to 2:1 respectively.

Oh sweet, that's a big deal for Ryzen/Threadripper performance in server builds. It's an under-served niche because nobody really cared about RAM clocks in server builds until Ryzen came along.

Even if the timings end up being meh, just getting the clockrates up gooses the Infinity Fabric, just like with non-ECC ram.

Jury is still out whether pumping 300W through on an area this large is a good idea:

GamersNexus says Threadripper will not come with a cooler, but will come with an Asetek mounting bracket so you can use many existing AIOs.

...I suppose that's one way of neatly sidestepping the problem of buying an AIO, and then having to source a retention bracket separately.

You'll probably need to wait for single socket Epyc CPU and platform to come out if you want a white box work horse mobo.

If you can't wait for that then just buy TR and turn off all the LED's on your mobo of choice. HEDT on either AMD and Intel is at least as much about doubling down on RGB blinkenlights now as it is about having moar corezzz.

This is only with Ryzen 7 and 5 retail mostly, I'm kind of expecting them to start turning ~300m profit Q1 2018 when they release Ryzen 3, Threadripper, EPYC, Raven Ridge and have a lot more OEM and mobile presence.

Of course they have to. If it was going to be that easy, Intel would have done it already.
