The first boss in IVAN is a giant man-eating plant that's super deadly in melee range and mostly harmless outside of it. One of the first times I reached it I still didn't know much about the game, but I had gotten lucky with some nice weapons and armor and thought I had a chance. I started trading blows with it and within the first three hits the plant bit one of my legs off, so at that point I'm committed to the fight because my armor encumbered me too much to get away on one leg. I keep fighting and it bites my weapon arm off, sending my axe (and arm) flying across the room, so I'm stuck rummaging through my bag for anything that might help. I zap a random wand at it and it's a wand of acid rain, which begins pouring on the plant AND me because I'm in melee range. The acid dissolves my remaining arm and leg... and kills the giant plant.

So there I am, my first kill on the first boss of the game, and I'm lying there on the cave floor amidst pools of blood and acid as a limbless torso. I started praying in the hopes that the gods would give me at least one limb back, and while I'm doing that, my puppy (which you start with and somehow survived the carnivorous plant and acid torrent) decides to feast upon the dissolved corpse of the boss. He steps through the tile my torso lump is on, rolling me into the acid puddle next to where I landed. Unable to move, I melt and die in an inch-deep pool of acid I had conjured.

You don't have to be hardcore to enjoy IVAN. You have to be willing to let IVAN go hardcore on you.

I have this sort of fear: I have a LOT of games on steam. Could steam just ban my account so I can't play stuff? I use a vpn for torrenting sometimes but I don't ever pirate games at all, or buy games while I'm on a vpn. Steam sees me changing to russia and back. Twice I've vpn'd to unlock a game early.

The vpn stuff is not even really part of my fear which is that for some reason steam could just stop working or ban me for no good reason and that steam wouldn't ever give me access again. Does that happen? Does steam have support who actually talk to you ever? I've never had to contact them before.

No. They can trade / VAC / Community ban you or restrict access so you can't activate or buy stuff, but AFAIK there are no bans that stop you playing things. I mean, Valve could go down the tubes but there's SteamPipe, so even theoretically then you could still download and install.

e: Even when DrunkenFool leaked all the golden wrench stuff they just VAC'd him, rather than anything else. And then hired him, but still.

There was a goon(sorry, can't remember his name right now) who got a Buy Ban because he bought through the Russian site and sold/gifted/traded the games.
I believe he was actually in that region, and simply just used the gifting system to its fullest extent.
I'm not sure if that ban ever got lifted.

VPN unlocks shouldn't be a problem and the worst you can get, is probably a mail from Valve and the game not unlocking.
Trying to circumvent prices by using a VPN to buy in cheaper regions is where you could end up getting a Buy Ban.

The only time I've ever heard of games being removed, is when you buy keys from shady sites, where the keys are usually gotten through stolen credit cards.
Sometimes the publisher will disable those keys and your game is gone from your library, so stick to the legit shops and you should be OK.

Civ 6 is not a fun game. I played Civ V into the ground, I tried to beat it with all empires on king difficulty and got maybe 3/4 of the way through. I have about 500 hours in Civ V. I have played a lot of Civ, I played the poo poo out of Civ 1. I love Civ.

Civ 6 has got me to play 2 games of it, then I gave up. I recently asked in the thread "has this game changed much since release, I didn't like it" and the reply was "no". I think I even played Civ: beyond earth more than I played Civ VI and I hated beyond earth.

E: A really neat little game that's the price of a pint is PAKO 2, a top-down getaway driver game. Part twin stick shooter, part GTA and a little dash of Crazy Taxi, you drive your car around picking up heisters in order to drop them off at their requested destination, all the while pursued by the police. You get money for each successful dropoff and can use it to upgrade your cars and buy new weapons - more money if you survive the level and drive out the exit. Has a cute VHS aesthetic and is a fun little game if you just want some fast arcade action.

I haven't played Foxhole, but I can vouch for Running with Rifles which is a very similar game, except not Early Access, not a MMO and with less base-building (three good things IMO). It came out over 2 years ago and is still getting regular updates and also has a demo

:allears: I'll check IVAN out some time!

Also yeah yeah roguelikes / not roguelikes hybrids - okay, I don't care about the distinction that much, but when I'm opening up the roguelikes category in my steam library I'm looking for top-down grid-based dungeoncrawls (Morphblade bends this but ehhh) with turn-based rpg-esque gameplay. Which is like, the narrowest of narrow definitions, which is why I added in the bonus category for FTL and Spelunky and so on. We can argue about what is a roguelike until the heat death of the universe, but I swear my aim in this list was to group up similar games in the genre so we're not having people look at DoomRL and Spelunky as the same thing when, uh, their core gameplay is definitely different.

Anyhow, I'm checking out Darkwood because i've never heard of it before and it looks cool, so thanks!
