The worst part of Fallout 4 is they made the weapons weird magic-like things ala Diablo 2 and you only have 4 gun models, total.

Fallout 4 also has the worst open world I've ever seen in a Bethesda game. You basically only have 2 major settlements with npcs and the rest of the world is just ghoul infested small settlements or you have to effectively reconstruct the world and it's economy using a terrible and super tedious ui.

I'm playing through Jotun right now, and it's as if the devs completely forgot to add actual Stuff To Do in the levels. 90% of the gameplay is running around really slowly in maps that are overwhelmingly empty and devoid of anything of interest. I guess the main gameplay attraction is the boss fights, which I haven't done yet, but still. Even the camera seems disinterested in the whole thing, often lagging behind for several seconds before eventually acquiescing and centering back on your character. It's all just so plodding.

Yeah, I gave up after a couple hours (I think I had beaten 2-3 bosses at that point) because it was just incredibly dull. The visuals are great, but as a game it's just bad.

Don't forget "X Settlement is under attack" and when you get there maybe 3-4 raiders with bats are hassling the locals and you finish it off it 3 seconds. All I wanted was to give the locals laser rifles and plasma pistols and have them melt the attackers but somehow they'd always lose.

The settlement aspect was a great idea with terrible implementation, especially since you'd get the hoarding bug and want to collect every bit of spare gear you find, but then without a high level perk and "couriers" you couldn't use any of those resources at other settlements. Plus the habitat design was just weird and why would you bother when you just set up 20 basic beds in the ruins and happiness shoots up to the max. Needing the perks to build certain things was also a pain, since you'd get locked out of really cool poo poo if you didn't make sure to max Science! and at least 2 weapon skills.

Seems like both "The Long Dark" and "Slime Rancher" released 1.0 versions today. Anyone have any feedback on either of those? I know Slime Rancher is a goon favorite so that's high up on my list. How about the other?

Haven't opened the sandbox mode to see what it adds, but The Long Dark's update adds the first 2 of 5 story episodes (starring both Commander Shepherds). The first episode is partially a tutorial for the game, and then it opens up into a wider area with some fetch quests mixed in with the regular survival stuff. The questing stuff isn't that exciting (gather me some things, go here) but it does give some purpose to what you're doing beyond just surviving, and the survival stuff is still good. Be ready to throw lots of rocks at rabbits.

e: Realised you meant about the game itself. It's a survival game set in a desolate, frigid, remote wilderness of Canada (so, in Canada). There's no monsters or zombies, instead there are wolves and the occasional bear (which aren't hostile on the lowest difficulty). You start off scavenging for tinned food and old clothes in cabins and lighting fires in caves from books, and then once you're set up you can fish in ice holes or hunt deer for food and hides. Then a wolf attacks you and you hide in a car bandaging a heavy wound, freezing because the attack ruined all four of the pairs of trousers you were wearing and you're sitting there in your underpants.

It's also really pretty.

Yeah, honestly, I wouldn't mind a "walking simulator" where you've just gotten rid of combat. I'd love one where the environment itself is your antagonist, like a malfunctioning space station where there's nothing paranormal or evil going on, just a natural disaster or an accident.

Adr1ft? You're in a destroyed space station, trying to repair the escape pod system, and you piece together what caused the accident as you repair the escape-system. The only obstacle is the need to refill oxygen.

Warning, may cause motion sickness. Also VR not required, totally playable in normal PC mode.

What Remains of Edith Finch is a delightful walking-simulator with some cool mini-stories. Follows a girl returning to her family home to find out what "happened" to her family, each family member's story is told in a really unique fashion. Very whimsical. 15 bucks is a little too much (my playtime was 97 minutes), but if it ever drops to 10, I'd say that's the perfect price.

Is there anyone who has an old copy of Portal 2 lying around (or that wants to buy a new one) that they'd be willing to trade for anything up to $25 on Amazon? I want to play some Portal 2 co-op but my game budget right now is an amazon gift card balance and Amazon doesn't have digital copies of it.

You know, it'd be one thing if he adhered to that philosophy but just kinda kept the reasons for himself - it's another thing to write a bloated piece of text boasting about... the first paragraph of the design document being an aristocrat's manifesto (???), and how filthy casuals need not apply. Why would you alienate 90% of the people who'll take a look at your lovely game before they've even had a chance to write it off themselves?
