American Horror Story is an anthology series created by Ryan Murphy. Each season is a self-contained storyline an entry in an increasingly scattershot and arbitrary canon, a pastiche of forms and genres found in western-style horror.

American Horror Story: Cult is about clowns and the 2016 US presidential election. This is the first year in which Ryan Murphy has set up an Instagram account, which he has used to tantalize us with bloodstained pretty boys and visits from old friends and dank memes. You can find more formal, structured promos for the season on the tie-in site every week until the show premieres.

Celebrities who have been roped into this (*for the first time):
Evan Peters
Sarah Paulson
Adina Porter
Cheyenne Jackson
Frances Conroy
Mare Winningham
Emma Roberts
Billie Lourd*
Billy Eichner*
Alison Pill*
Colton Haynes*
Leslie Grossman*
Lena Dunham*

American Horror Story: Bees will premiere on September 5. As usual, the title of the show has changed so be sure to remake your season passes.

Previous on American Horror Story:

Season 6: Roanoke

Season 5: Hotel

Season 4: Freak Show

Season 3: Coven

Season 2: Asylum

Season 1: Murderhouse

Hey, Roanoke was pretty good.

I'm actually kind of optimistic about a new season of AHS for the first time since 2013.

Time to lift these expectations up to the roof! What could possibly go wrong?

There is nothing remaining about this series that invokes the spirit of Season 2 which caused me to fall so in love with this show, and yet I've still continued to watch every episode of every season because I'm a loving sucker

I take each season as it comes. I expect nothing anymore. Except something totally goofy at some point.

Personally, I've always thought Ryan's period pieces are so much better. Asylum, Freak Show, even Feud. So I don't have a lot of confidence that they'll craft a story around the election that is more clever than it is obnoxious. But time will tell.

Coven has made me check out except at season's start every year sincr and something has happened every year since that was just as bad as precious masturbating to placate a minotaur in the first episode. Im waiting for this show to go one episode without making me cringe.

Was the first season of Feud any good? I really enjoyed American Crime Story; is it even somewhat close to that in quality/entertainment?

The writing wasn't quite as tight but the performances from Lange and Sarandon were absolute powerhouses and kept the whole thing buoyant.

A question: having really enjoyed Feud and really, really enjoyed American Crime Story but never having seen AHS, is there a stand-out series I should watch? I was always under the impression it was kinda schlocky camp nonsense (not that there's anything wrong with that), but I'm a convert to Ryan Murphy and Id like to give it a fair shake.

The seasons generally go like this:

1: A good slow-burn haunted house story (watch)
2: Batshit madness overload (watch)
3: Garbage (do not watch under any circumstances)
4: Not very good but an improvement over 3, although to be honest a 13 hour stream from a camera pointed at a putrefying pig carcass would have been an improvement over 3 (do not watch unless you find yourself getting really into the show or fall madly in love with Jessica Lange)
5: Surprisingly decent and a return to telling an actual story instead of a medley of unconnected shock videos (watch)
6: A decent-to-good story presented in a really unconventional structure (watch)

They are all absolutely schlocky camp nonsense, of course.

Controversial opinion: Freak Show was worse than Coven. Coven was insanely boring and nothing mattered or even made sense but at least it wasn't actively offensive in a bunch of ways. And swamp witch Lily Rabe makes me forgive a lot of lovely writing.

Yeah Coven wasn't THAT bad, really...pretty boring, sure, and the plot was all over the place, but personally I like to watch AHS for the horror movie send ups, and Coven did that just fine.

We got voodoo, zombies, witches & witch trials (obviously), that whole "drink the blood of the young to stay youthful" trope, a minotaur monster, a Frankenstein monster, and even a scene where people get their eyes removed with a melon baller. Now that's what I call horror!

But speaking of executing horror movie send ups, S6: Roanoke really did not do very much of that at all which, in my eyes, was a big bummer looking back. I enjoyed parts of it at the time, but in retrospect it's pretty unmemorable, and I'm possibly the least excited for a new season of AHS as I've ever been.

And yet, here I am, posting about it on a Tuesday morning instead of working

It was really uncomfortable, in a way AHS hasn't done me in a while. I will always love Roanoke for the exact recreation of the format of My Haunted House. Its so shlocky AMS didn't even seem like a parody.

Also, because I'm even further south than the Roanoke area and all the old tired southern jokes in it were just :allears:

The most unforgivable part of Roanoke is how they continually lauded their fictional show (to the point of having people's lives and psyches ruined by just how awesome the show was), when it actually looked like some bobo poo poo that even A&E wouldn't run.

I can't remember the name, but there's a ghost show that has pretty actors during the "interviews", and another set of pretty actors for the reenactment. The first half of Roanoke is that show so hard.

As much as I enjoyed Roanoke, the biggest "suspension of belief" factor was that the first five episodes was a television series that took over popular culture with the power of a dozen Game of Thrones and Breaking Bads.

That, and the fact that the role of Shelby beat The Butcher for a Saturn Award.

That reminds me. Unfortunately, Kathy Bates won't be in this season due to a scheduling conflict with Bates's new Netflix show.

I'm a little skeptical about this season. The previews suggest that Murphy is really hung up on Twisty from Freak Show. I never really liked Twisty as a concept or a character, except in his ability to propel Dandy toward insanity. It might be a personal thing, but I have difficulty taking the clown get-up seriously.

Hopefully, I'm wrong and we get another Asylum.

Perhaps the biggest mistake Freak Show made was eliminating Twisty so fast, so maybe it's lingering feelings of regret.

I don't know, sometimes he gets these ideas in his head and they're just sort of there. Like that gremlin stuck in the mattress in Hotel that was all over the advertising and didn't mean anything but to be a spooky image.

AHS: Roanoke was really pretty good, and didn't have near the amount of flaws that Coven, Freak Show, and Hotel did. It's the best season since Asylum without crossing over into "bad". However, it's still a Ryan Murphy project, so... your mileage may very.
