Well, fuck. Really?
This is a dark age, a bloody age, an age of daemons and sorcery. It is an age of battle and death, and of the world's end. Amidst all the fire, flame, and fury it is a time, too, of mighty heroes, of bold deeds and great courage.

At the heart of Old World sprawls the Empire, the largest and most powerful of the human realms. Known for its engineers, sorcerers, traders and soldiers, it is a land of great mountains, mighty rivers, dark forests, and vast cities. And from his throne in Altdorf reins the Emperor Karl Franz, sacred descendant of the founder of these lands, Sigmar, and wielder of his magic warhammer.

But to the west lies Bretonnia, a land of chivalry and inequality; ruled by the good King Leoncoeur, it is a nation devoted entirely to promoting nobility and justice above all else. Knights quest endlessly for the Holy Grail of the Lady of the Lake in hopes to gain her blessing. It is a nation of 12 states, each ruled by a duke who answers to the king..

.. save for Mousillon, the lost dukedom, a cursed and miserable land where the nobility has been left to its own devices and horrors stalk the night. Here, in this bedevilled corner of Bretonnia, is where a villainous thief has fled to escape justice after tainting the honor of a lady of Lysonne, Mousillon's neighbor to the north.

===

Beautiful and scenic Mousillon. Not shown: rapists, murderers, undead, in any combination.

Lyonesse is a fine and fertile duchy north of Mousillon, ruled by Duke Adalhard. The Duke is a just enough ruler and the duchy's knights josut, its ladies pray, and its peasants toil just as they all should. However, in any society, there are malcontents and criminals. In recent years, Lyonesse has been tormented by one in particular: Guido LeBeau, bandit, agitator, womanizer, thief, and killer.

Some unsavory elements among the peasants have adopted LeBeau as a symbol of peasant revolution, and some have even suggested LeBeau's example shows a commoner might be as strong and just as a noble knight.

This is plainly unacceptable, and Duke Adalhard has for some time offered a price on LeBeau's head.

The last straw came when the diamond-set circlet of Lady Augistine was stolen. Lady Augistine, lady in waiting to Adalhart's wife, Ismene, was much distraught having seen LeBeau sneaking into her chambers and rummaging through her things.

LeBeau, not being a shy or sensible man, boasted of the theft in some taverns of ill-repute to some of the patrons, some of which knew the news would put them in good favor with the Duke. Adalhard has raised the price on LeBeau's head to include a grant of land in Lyonesse, and he has taken to the very un-knightly step of summong adventurers to pursue LeBeau.

Whether you are a true son of Bretonnia or a wanderer who has followed the scent of adventure to Lyonesse, you await a meeting with the Duke, enjoying the customary two days of hospitlaity in his castle. Others have joined you, and from all you have heard, the group of you are the only ones the Duke has seen fit to serve him.

====

Welcome to Warhammer Fantasy 2nd Edition! I'm going to be running the Barony of the Damned, an adventure that takes the party into the heart of Mousillon, which is the lovely part of not-France in Warhammer Fantasy. We are pre-Age of Sigmar here so Bretonnia is still relevant, yay!

Character creation will be done in the standard manner; post letting me know your interest, and I will roll you two races and two class choices, giving you four choices all together. I am using the Career Compendium, so it will be a 1d1000 roll to see what you get, and there's quite a few options. Roll up your stats, one roll per stat applied however you like rather than in order, and use Shallya's mercy on the lowest (turning something lower than an 11 into an 11.) If you get a legitimately horrible roll where nothing is above 11, then I'll let you reroll everything ONCE, but you must take the second roll no matter what.

I also offer what's been affectionately called MANMODE, where I roll once for race and class and you're stuck with what you get. I'll explain the benefit to this in a moment!

Once you have selected your career and race, go ahead and build your stats and take every skill and all of the trappings of that career. Then, no matter what, you get TWO free advances, meaning two +5 advances to primary stats, two +1 advances to a secondary, or a mix. If you went MANMODE, you get FOUR advances, putting you just a bit above your friends and allies.

I will be selecting five people for this game, and I would like a bit of backstory about what brings you to the city. Recruitment will be open until Sunday the 13th, and I will make my picks then.

Well, fuck. Really?
Dachsundofdoom, you are one of Kislev's mad Streltsi, a bizarre not-Russian gun toting berserker; when your ammo runs dry, you murder poo poo with your poleaxe, and by God do you love your job. You have named your gun and should anyone else use it other than you, they will have offended you worse than if they had slept with your wife. Seriously that is a thing the book actually says about you.

Liquid Dinosaur, you are a much more mundane Elven Apprentice Wizard. Yeah you're the token elf, and a wizard to boot. Try not to turn every other elf in existence sterile/barren by trying to cast a fireball, like some OTHER elven wizards. As an elf, you don't have to go to school or pay dues, unlike human wizards, so you're basically the worst kind of rear end in a top hat.

Alexei Gorky

He picks up the five coins again, one by one. They make tiny rasping sounds against each other as he clenches a fist around them. He raises the flagon, drains it, slams it back down to the table. He unclenches his fist and lays the coins out one by one, carefully, ritualistically.

Dmitri. Big Ivan. Pyotr. Feodor. Little Ivan. One coin for each brother; two by blood, all by combat. They were gone now, lost in one terrible night. Now Alexei was the lone survivor of the merry band that struck out from Kislev with dreams of mercenary fortune to be made in the south, far from their icy home.

His watery grey eyes twitch to a servant lurking in the corner, and she flinches as though shot. She'd been staring at him. It was the bright uniform, the rusty hair, the face full of anguish and fury. That, and the fact that he'd been drinking continuously ever since he'd arrived at the castle. Far more than was courteous, since he was drinking for free. He takes a deep breath and growls one word in that unmistakable northern accent.

"More."

The maiden scurries out without a word. None of them had the courage to confront him over draining their master's stores of alcohol. Not even the Duke had dared to complain. Perhaps he assumed it was simply the cost of doing business. You wouldn't find a fiercer warrior and gunman than a Streltsi. Besides, it was clear that Alexei didn't give a drat about the reward or the land. He was just looking for an excuse to go there. To Mousillon.

Things crawled out of that cursed place and struck their camp in the darkest part of the night, just before sunrise. Everyone but him, torn limb from limb by loping monsters in the dark. He never saw what they were, for they'd kicked dirt into the fire at the start of the attack, and they dragged away the bodies. Both their own and those of his brothers. He'd followed the blood to the border once the sun peeked over the horizon. He'd wanted to keep following, alone, but he knew it was a fool's errand. If he was going to die, he knew his brothers would want him to accomplish something. What was revenge unachieved?

The servant brought the whole bottle this time. Good. It was going to hurt when he sobered up for the journey, but nothing could hurt him like the loss he had already experienced. All he could do now was find whatever Mousillon-spawned monsters did this, and slaughter each and every one. For his brothers.

He picks up the five coins again, one by one.

Werix, you are a Dwarf Outlaw. Why you aren't a Troll Slayer simply from being a dishonorable wretch, I don't know. I didn't write the rules for this book. Maybe there's honor among thieves, or maybe your ancestors have always cracked unsuspecting people in the back of the head and rifled through their pockets.

fool_of_sound, you are a Human Grave Warden. You are the arch-nemesis of the grave robber, as he robs the graves you ward. You start with a powerful stench because that's how WFRP2e works. That guy gets a rifle and a poleaxe, you get body odor.

Tricky, you are a Halfling Hunter. I should clarify, you are a Halfling what hunts, not a person who hunts Halflings. Try to visualize Frodo with a longbow, I'll wait.

Halloween Jack, you are a Dwarf Rat Catcher. You have the coveted small, but vicious dog, a beast highly prized by all adventurers for its ability to gently caress poo poo up. Skaven beware, for your mighty mutt will feast upon their throats. You yourself are a small, but vicious rat catcher.

Mr. Maltose, you are an Elf and there is no helping that, but on the bright side, you may be either an Outrider, Noble, Gambler, or Seaman. If you don't giggle and snort at 'Elf Seaman' then I don't know what to tell you.

Gaspard the Gravedigger

Gaspard is a large, simple young man from a small, simple village. Hardworking, optimistic, loyal, and servile, he is the ideal Bretonnian peasant, and he would have likely made a natural yeoman if not for his blatant, crippling stupidity. His utter inability to grasp the subtle art of charcoal burning left his father at a loss, and when the old gravedigger offered to take Gaspard as his apprentice for free, his father jumped on the opportunity.

Truth be told, Gaspard rather enjoys his profession, and most days can been found walking the old graves, whistling, singing, or just making conversation with the corpses. In turn, the villagers are rather grateful for the oversized man's presence; this close to Mousillon, a stout body and a sort of oblivious courage are highly desirable traits in a gravekeeper. Recently, one of the Duke's knights rode into town demanding a guide for an expedition into the accursed province, and Gaspard happily volunteered. Meeting new friends, going on and adventure, serving his Duke, and maybe even getting rewarded? According to Gaspard, it doesn't get much better than this.

Cat Hogberry-Patch, Halfling Hunter

"Yanno, people're always askin' me, 'Oi, Cat, why'd you want to leave The Moot?' It's not that it's a bad spot to rest yer head, quite the opposite, but I've always bin more at home in the woods than Gran's house. Mum and dad are bakers, just the most brilliant pies you can think of, but we all know me older brother's gonna take on the family shop. I don't fancy slaving away for that pile of bollocks until I catch the eye of some fat ol' trader at the kiss-scrump."

"Nah, guv, I figured I'd wander the road. Did some provisionin' for a company of mixed infantry for a few seasons, wasn't too bad. Halflings don't get a lotta respect on the march, but ya make a few friends fast when you're bringin' in a fresh brace of coneys and ya can shoot the bollocks off a deer at a hundred paces. They still checked their coinpurses erry time I mosied on through, but ya get used to it."

Cat rubs her longbow lovingly.

"I swapped half a deer for this beauty. They say that an Empire longbow can punch through armor and straight through to the next. I dunno about all that, but she's done me well. Anyways, I gots the wandering feet like me grandpap. I figure I'll head back to The Moot eventually, but no hurry, eh?"

To be fair, there's a lot of stuff that changes once you are assigned a race; only Halflings and Humans roll for bonus talents, and each race gets its own selection of skills and talents that it gets alongside its career stuff, as well as their own stat modifications and wounds and fate.

Feel free to roll new stuff once you get a race and career. I'll roll up everyone's manmodes here shortly.

Unknown Quality, you are a Human Zealot. Life dealt you a cruel hand and rather than going insane with grief, you went insane with FAITH. The key difference is you are out there beating people to death in the name of one of the warrior gods, rather than sitting at home writing sad poetry or whatever. Good on you.

Ryuujin, you are an Elf Entertainer. You juggle butterflies or something, I dunno. You're an elf entertainer. You do elfy things to entertain other elves and humans don't care for it because it doesn't involve farts, bawdy lyrics about buxom lasses, or explosions.

Fathis Munk, you are a Halfling Servant. You are the lowest possible position on the social ladder in the Empire, and also a servant. The game literally gave you a quote to summarize your career that is just 'do you want fries with that.' You're going into a nation where knights basically shove people like you in the mud because it's what's expected of them, so good luck and have fun!

Professor_Curly, you are a Dwarf Burgher. You expected a hamburger joke but I'm above that. Really I don't even know what a burgher does, but hey, you're one of them.

frankenfreak, you have the option of being either Human or an Elf, but that's not much of a choice. As a human, you may be a Grail Pilgrim, one of the peasants of Bretonnia that realized the life of a peasant sucks and so instead you throw your lot in with a questing knight. If he dies, you might get to steal his bones as a relic! If not, you might be a Swampiare, which means you are a Bretonnian peasant that hunts frogs. Yep.

As an elf, you might be a Hunter, because of course you are, or you might be an Initiate of one of the elven gods. You might eventually get to draw on divine magic but I don't think FFG/Green Ronin ever even wrote anything about the elf pantheon and their special powers.

Dragon God

Gildiril the Gilded

Strange music fills the air, accompanied by raucous laughter, the low mumble of talking, the sharp cries of the barkers calling sightseers to the various attractions. The scent of many animals and their dung, of many people pressed close together, of cooking food blend together to form a unique experience.

"Come one! Come all! To the greatest show!"

The tents blot out the land, the ground is churned to mud from the passing of animals and people. Finally the main attractions start. The mob is ushered into the main tent and witness the spectacle of fools dressed strangely with painted faces making funny, falling down and accidentally hitting each other with boards. They watch nimble acrobats swinging from swing to swing high in the air, walking on tightropes and performing various feats of death defying derring do. Gasps filling the air each time it seems like someone might fall. Strange furry beasts are brought in to the fear and delight of all, their foreign trainers putting them through their paces with various acts including standing atop a ball.

A garishly dressed elf with golden hair comes out to some cheering. He wears a gilded porcelain mask with a raucous smile, his clothes ringed with a variety of similar masks, each bearing a different expression. He waves, he bows, he moves over to his stage. There a wooden board shaped in a circle is set up a series of targets painted upon it, and some leather straps at strategic spots. The elf begins his routine with a dazzling display of daggers, flipping them about, dancing them along his long slender fingers, and flinging them at the targets. He retrieves the daggers and the target is set spinning. And again he sets the daggers flying into the targets, hitting despite the high speed of spinning target. But this display is not enough. Soon a beautiful girl in a skimpy costume is brought out and strapped to the once more motionless target. Once more a dazzling display of thrown daggers, each slamming into the target near the girl but without hitting her. The display escalates as the target is once more set in motion and the daggers again slam into the target. Screams of fright and delight fill the air as each dagger goes streaking toward the target, yet even with the motion each dagger fails to hit the girl while still hitting the target.

The display finishes, the elf and girl bow and wave then walk off. The rest of the attractions continue on. The whole event continues the next night, and the night after, before moving on to another village to repeat itself once more. Again and again. But as time moves on, as years move on, the numbers of visitors to the circus began to dwindle more and more, more and more attractions were shedded as they proved to expensive to continue. And in time the elf too had to leave the circus.

Gildiril the Gilded. A gifted knife thrower, a man of exceptional agility even for an elf. Even as a child he was gifted, not in magic like some of his family, but gifted all the same. He honed his agility, turned his nimble fingers to great use and eventually made his way out into the world. As he traveled the world he found quite a bit of trouble. People who hated him for his looks, people who hated him for being an elf, people who hated their lot in life, sad people, tired people, angry people. For a time he became depressed. His adventure seemed to be ready to end almost before it began. Not wanting to have his first time out in the world marred by the problems of people he wanted to make people happy. But he was no good at jokes, singing, or anything else that bring mirth to people. But he did have his nimble fingers. He started with simple tricks, then moved on to juggling and eventually to more dangerous looking displays. It worked, to a degree, but some were still put off by his beauty and his race. While there was nothing he could really do about the latter for the former he began to wear masks.

His adventures continued as he traveled exploring the world, seeing new sights, and displaying his skill to earn some money. And then he came across it. A traveling circus. A group of strange individuals with their own skills who displayed them to delight and entertain, and to earn money. He watched their show, and then when it was over he introduced himself. After displaying his talents he was brought on to the troup. As he traveled with the group he honed his skill further and expanded his act. He went from simple clothes to more extravagant outfits and costumes. His masks went from simple affairs to more elaborate and became a part of the air of mystery he had. Over the years the circus grew, more and more acts joined, and they became more and more popular. But of course nothing lasts forever.

And now that his time with the circus is over he must make his way out in the world on his own, somehow. It has been some time since he was alone. Still during the last stop he heard something interesting. The Duke of this land is calling for help, offering quite a bit. The story he heard sounds quite romantic. A true adventure like the stories some of his fellows would orate in the other attractions. And while he is hardly a knight, or a real fighter, his skills with the knife could prove useful and perhaps a bard will tell of his tale?

Snorri Bronnson

Me grandfolks came outta the Vaults, and me mum and dad come from Parravon, carting stonework and dwarfcraft all over for posh folk as wants that sorta thing. Then he got into wine, and cloth, and now he stays close in town, which is good cause his knees is bad, you know.

But I'm the second son and two daughters besides, so my dad says to me, "Son, I made my own living up out of nothing, like it were, and sad to say, you got to do the same." So I look around and I see even the rag and bone trade is shut up, and not the farmer nor the shopkeep complain of no place to throw out their ashes, but they've all got rats in their larders. "If it stinks, it clinks," mum used to say. So with no fear of ditch nor tunnel, I knew I had my work cut out for me. That's how I found Digger, she's a good dog.

And it pays tolerable well, but I figure there's big opportunities for a man who's ready for anything. I don't even know why I got called up when so many dangerous looking characters got turned away, but maybe his lordship prefers an honest rat-catcher to a cutthroat. I know I do. Anyway, if it all ends with me flushing rats out of wheat-stacks, only with a sack of ferrets and a new pair of boots, I'll call it a good day's work.

Bow or Polearm? Bow or Polearm? Bow or Polearm? That's a tough decision for me. Grail Pilgrim is such a flavorful career, though, and that settles it.

Marhault Perrot, Grail Pilgrim

Like most Brionnians, Marhault was born a romantic poet. Where others favor tales of love, Mar has always been fascinated by the tales of chivalry, especially those telling of the exploits of Grail Knights. And like any boy who's into such stories, he always dreamed of being one himself. Of course reality was that he was born into a family of peasants and his greatest deed in life would probably be building a new sty.

Two years ago, the Grail Knight Artagnan de Robin passed through Mar's hamlet. It was quite the show and Mar was starstruck. Then the band of Grail Pilgrims trailing Sir Artagnan entered the town and after talking to them, Marhault decided to join them. If he can't be a Grail Knight, he could at least be close to a true, living one. In his mind, this beat shoveling manure and maybe we would become famous himself for a song he would write about a great deed of Sir Artagnan one day.

In the two years following Artagnan he hasn't composed this great song yet, but witnessed his questing all across the land. His latest exploits would lead him into the Forest of Arden in search of a missing knight he was friends with. There he was beset upon by a horde of beastmen and the pilgrims rushed forward to help their revered Sir Artagnan. Many a pilgrim fell, but Mar survived. Sir Artagnan valiantly fought and saved the lives of many a pilgrim to boot. In the end, the beastmen were decimated and driven off. Only then it became apparent how much Artagnan had sacrificed for this victory. He collapsed, bleeding heavily from many wounds and the pilgrims attending to him quickly turned to securing the best relics off his body once they realized there was no hope and no prayer to the Lady would save Artagnan.

Since then, the pilgrim band has been marching across Bretonnia, carrying the body of Sir Artagnan and spreading the word of his noble deeds in life. After taking a winding route through the country, the group has finally sailed to Lyonesse. Not to bury him, of course, since the pilgrims are intend on continuing their tour through the land with Artagnan as so many pilgrims do.

Mar will not be joining them, however. Being witness to the great accomplishments of one of the greatest heroes of this age and the occasional opportunity to do something knight-like himself have become more important to him than serving the memory of Sir Artagnan. And while he thinks he'll join another band of Grail Pilgrims following a living knight when he finds one, the last stand of Sir Artagnan has left a mark on Mar. A thirst for thrill and adventure is growing in him. So when hears that Duke Adalhard is looking for adventurers he more than excited to sate this thirst by following the Duke's call, still as much a dreamer as he was three years ago.

e;fb, but I have pithy remarks!

Firesight, you are an Elf Toll Keeper. An odd career choice, collecting money to maintain roads cutting through forests and destroying the nature elves cherish so much. This might add an unhealthy dose of self-hate on top of the hate you get from other people.

Astus, you are a Dwarf Ex-Convict. Whatever you did to land in the slammer, don't do it again, okay?

wiegieman, you are a Human Knight Errant. You probably aspire to be a flower of chivalry, just like all the other Bretonnian knights. You may decide for yourself whether a light warhorse is better or worse than a small, but viscious dog.

Jo Joestar, you are a Human Bailiff. A job that gets poo poo on from both sides. The nobles you serve for not doing your job properly and the people you are in charge of for doing your job properly. No wonder you're looking into adventuring.

Henri de Vienne

Dear Father,
I swear I'll bring Grandfather's armor back. I'll see you in ten years or so when I'm famous. I also took Happy, he is very excited and will help me kill goblins.
Love Henrietta
PS I'm going to call myself after Grandfather, obviously.
PPS I hobbled the horses and I have a good head start.

In hindsight, Lord de Vienne will probably admit that it wasn't a good idea to name his daughter after her Grail Knight ancestor, but he was kind of hoping for a son. Then he got three, and Henrietta went from "at least an heiress has marriage prospects" to "I hope she likes marrying a younger son and weaving tapestries."

Now, for a girl who could beat up all three of her brothers, being relegated to textile duty for some lout who barely managed to not die when he was younger was entirely untenable. There were a number of shouting matches to this effect, most involving the words "no daughter of mine" or "what would your poor mother think", with numerous tears by the latter.

Whatever. Henrietta was always pretty good at bullying training sessions out of the armsmen, and she's at least half sure that some of the knights she meets are women in disguise. There's no way men can have hair that good.

This in no way stops her from insisting she's a man with a close shave and incredible hair.

With nothing but the armor on her back, years of practice, a shield with Vienne heraldry, an eager warhorse, and all the privileges of noble birth, Henri is going to make a name for herself or die trying.

Probably die.

Gottri is not what you would call lucky.

His family owned a small but successful mine is Ostland, up until it collapsed a few years ago. So Gottri decided to travel across the Empire, hoping to find another mine that could use an extra hand. Through a series of oddjobs, unfortunate events, and broken bones due to withholding of payment of oddjobs (due to said unfortunate events), Gottri was penniless and ostracized within a year. So he decided to steal from his last employer.

It should have been a simple, get-in-and-get-out job, and he's still certain the plan was foolproof. But Gottri is just...not very good at burglary. Multiple broken windows, several demolished doors, a couple of shattered vases, and the guards catching him while he was beating the poo poo out of some unfortunate human (Gottri panicked when he came around the corner unexpectedly, it's not his fault) was enough to see the dwarf enjoy some time in jail.

But that's all in the past, and now he has a chance to start over on the right foot (or actually learn how to steal, whichever is easier), as long as he doesn't bungle this job. But that's a very big "if".

"My family've been bailiffs to the lords of Quetteville Manor as long as anyone can remember - my father, grandfather and his father were all bailiffs for my lord's grandfather, old lord Percy. He'd found the grail when he was young, which I suppose is why he lasted longer than most. So since this job's been in the family for so long, I thought I had a duty to do it as well as I could - keeping it ready for the next generation, so to speak - and I've always been proud of my work. Up until last harvest, lord Philippe always got what he was owed, when he was owed, with not a penny more or a penny less, and none of it kept for me beyond what the lord saw fit to pay me."

"And that last harvest, in a roundabout way, is why I'm here. See, in the western bit of my lord's lands, there's not much trading or anything beyond farming. So when it's time for them to give my lord his taxes, he gets paid mostly in wheat and vegetables, and maybe pork if there’s been a butchering lately. It’s my job to collect, so I get a big covered wagon from my lord's stables - you don't want wheat getting wet, it's a pain and a half to dry - and go around the western hamlets. It's a two-day round trip, and my lord always holds a feast for the household once all the taxes are in, so I'm always in a hurry to get back. Except this time, when I got back, all the wagon contained was a thin layer of cut wheat, and some rocks packed in straw. I still don't know how it got switched. I saw the goods put into the wagon, and I never left it unguarded. The lord was just shy of having me flogged once he saw the goods were missing."

"So first off, I didn't have any idea who could have done it. The villagers might have, but there aren't many places they could store that much grain, and I checked all of them. Bandits or the Herrimault or Greenskins, maybe, but there haven't been any sightings of them for years. For all I knew, the Fay could have spirited it away. But a few weeks later, I started hearing stories going about how LeBeau had struck again - stolen a wagon of grain from some greedy lord and his stupid henchman, and given it away to a village on the other side of Lyonesse. The stories weren’t all right - I never slept on the way back, and I don't have that many warts, but it was close enough to the truth."

"So, now I've got a good idea who did it. My lord's made it clear that he won't need me around for a long while, and he doesn't much care where I go. And now that I’ve got so much time on my hands, I'm going to go and wring every gold ecu my lord’s owed out of LeBeau’s hide, and maybe give my lord a nice piece of land for the delay."

"So, that's why I'm here. What's your story?"

After all, he was a brilliant elf among a race known for it's brilliance, and Khaine take him if he was going to have to wait a millennia for a chance to prove his natural-born skill in politics! Surely he could take a few years to set himself up in some governmental post in the human Empire and use a few decades of experience there to prove that he would be a valuable ally in the circles of power back home.

Of course, it didn't help that he took a ship to the wrong port. It wasn't his fault, the stupid humans told him that their final destination was supposed to be Marienburg, but instead they told him to get off the ship in Martel with assurances that it was their final stop because of a letter from the captains wife! Still, one human city would be much like any other, so a few glares and stern words were enough to get an interview with the local Baron so that he could demand a position suitable to his superior mind in the mans court.

A few days in the Barons dungeon later, after having served his time for insolence towards a man of supposedly superior blood, Jo-Hanseur managed to make a deal. He would be given a prestigious position in the mans court if he would first prove his bravery by serving in a supposedly perilous task of being the Toll Keeper along the border of Lysonne and Mousillon. The last two had apparently proven themselves craven and fled their posting. It would be a simple thing, really. How much threat could a few bandits and smugglers be to an elf?
