Main reason for that would be volume control. That said, my Denon let's me disable the power portions of CEC.

Buying tvs in Europe seems like a waste of time, by the time I transpose the EU model to the NA one and try to find a review for the series, mind you most of the times not the same year of making or revision, most resources just seem to give it a middling review, and the better models are nowhere to be found. So I'll just keep things simple, is there a scenario where a Sony 32" priced the same as a 40'' LG worth going for instead of the bigger one?

HDTVtest.co.uk is based in the U.K., that might help give you more relevant reviews to what's available in your market?

It never helps that different areas get different codes, then different stores get different codes to stop price matching. It can definitely be a frustrating exercise, I feel you.

Honestly TVs 40" and under are so cheap and all LCD that it's more about taste in UI than anything else.

I remember reading about a guy trying to sell a TV that had a huge cock burned into his screen. Maybe the same story.

Yeah it's weird I had a panasonic plasma and I would leave it on like NCAA football menus for hours and I would notice a little bit of burn in like minutes later but it would always go away pretty fast

You have to be pretty abusive (CNN idling for 8 hours a day) to get real burn in.

Yeah, retention goes away. Burn doesn't. My friend managed to get some IR for a day or two after playing way too much FIFA on his LCD.

How on Earth does the CNN bug get on there? I thought you had to leave a static image for at least an hour for that to happen. CNN has regular commercial breaks. Is it really just that sensitive, that even 10 minutes does it in?

The commercials are not what's on the screen 75% of the time, it only seems that way

It doesn't even fill the edges of the screen which seems weird to me, although admittedly I haven't really watched cable news enough to pay attention to what their on-screen graphics setup looks like.

my c6 has a thing where if you are using a native app to watch television and pause it (e.g. through netflix) the screen will automatically go completely black and only show a small "firework" effect to indicate the TV is on but yeah, another reason to not watch cable news, christ

These people who have posted this problem usually say something to the effect of "I only watch [cable news channel] for a few hours every day!" These people are putting 1500 hours a year with those static logos on their emissive display and wondering why they are having problems. It completely escapes them that a few hours of cable news is not only a waste of the TV, but it's not a normal use case for most people. I even saw one guy ask someone who didn't have any issues which news channel they were watching every day. Person responded back that they didn't watch any at all and I think you could hear the other guy's brain short out over the internet.

pwn posted:A three to five minute break isn't sufficient to avoid image burn in? How long should a pixel be a different color? I think there is some confusion about the difference between image persistence and burn-in. Image Persistence is a problem with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technologies. The liquid crystals twist when electricity is applied, which changes how much light they allow to pass through. That's how different images are displayed, but there are a wide variety of liquid formulations and arrangements with different cost/benefit tradeoffs and in some of these variations the crystals are prone to remaining stuck in their twisted state, causing an image to persist even after the scene has changed. This can generally be cleared by displaying different colors/patterns on the screen or simply waiting. In some cases people have been able to clear it by gently rubbing the screen but my advice is to keep fingers off the TV if it can be avoided. Burn-in is a problem with emissive display technologies, such as plasma and OLED displays. There is an emissive material which gives off light when electricity is applied. This is the secret of the "perfect blacks" of such displays - while an LCD requires a backlight to be constantly lit on at least part of the display, with an emissive display there is no light emitted where none is desired. The catch, however, is that the emissive material gradually loses brightness over time. So long as you are displaying moving / varied images, this is no problem, as this wear will be evenly distributed throughout the display (and it will take years of operation before this loss of brightness becomes noticeable to the human eye). But if you display a static image on just part of the display for hour after hour, you can cause this wear-out to be occurring only where that image was, "burning it in" to the display. To try to counteract burn-in, modern day emissive technology TVs have a computer program which tracks how much each part of the display has been used and then displays a corresponding negative pattern to even out the wear during off hours.

So I hooked up my PC to my LG B6 and I've been playing Super Mario Sunshine through an emulator (Dolphin can up the textures--I've got it at 1440p and it looks SO MUCH better than playing it on my gamecube). One thing I noticed late last night that I don't think I've seen before is a weird visual glitch. When I turn the camera, I'd sometimes get a "double vision" effect--kind of like a holographic effect--where you'd see mario's hat in a place where it used to be but isn't any longer. This could be the emulator, but I think I've seen similar effects while watching Luke Cage on netflix. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a setting that may reduce it?

Not an expert but if it's something controllable (and not some intrinsic part of the processing) it sounds like it could be the interpolation. Not sure what it's called on LG sets but it's for anti-judder, and makes up frames in between actual frames to smooth out the motion. Soap opera effect is also caused by these settings if you want something (though unrelated) that you can search on to at least know what knobs to turn. Some people love it, most hate it, for me it depends on the source material and motion but there are some things it smooths out well and some things where it's extremely distracting.

Motion interpolation will reduce it, but also add lag. This is an artifact that's inherent in the tech. The combination of super fast pixel response time, sample and hold method of display, and the way the panel refreshes itself can give this impression on certain types of pans.

So is the LG OLED B-series the one to get since the picture's the same as every other model? I'm slowly getting worn down and getting ready to buy.

My old 42" TV has given up the ghost. The LG B6 is $1900 on Amazon ($1700 through "Amazon Warehouse Deals" but idk if $200 is worth the risk). Is that basically the way to go? I'm a little concerned that it's going to be too large for my place but whatever. I got my last TV about a decade ago, and am hoping to get some years out of this one too.
