I'm so ready to build a Threadripper system.

Someone want to buy a lightly-used i7-4770K?

Fuck the cowboys. Unf. Fuck em hard.
As an addition to all the other updates re this in this thread, that guy updated with a note that the stress test is working fine other than the apparently-expected conftest segfaults. So it seems Epyc isn't susceptible to whatever the bug is on Ryzen. Wait for B2 Ryzen I guess

On newegg.ca the available threadripper motherboards are holy-poo poo expensive. sTR4 is the socket, right? Is there any other? https://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007624%20601301149

It's not really that insane, HEDT motherboards are going to be more pricey due to more layers for the extra pcie channels, memory channels, etc.

If you look at X99 mobos there are quite a few in the similar range and those have been on the market for quite some time.

Gots to pay to play :getin:

One thing I am trying to figure out is if there are any differences I would care about between the ASRock boards.

X99 i can find in the $300 range. These ones are in the $500 range. Quite a jump. I guess these are the top on the pop for the platform and are aimed at those who can't wait. I hope there'll be a few cheaper down the road (october maybe?)

Yes but there ~are~ X99 motherboards on newegg in the $500 range too. There's more of a price range because there are more X99 boards. Also the prices will probably come down as the designs get refined and cost-reduced.

The Asus board listed on newegg.ca is their top end board. They have also annouced a low(er) end board, but it looks like it won't be out until a couple of weeks after the Threadripper launch.

The main difference I can see is that the Fatal1ty board has a 10Gb ethernet port in addition to the two gigabit ports of the Taichi. When it comes to sound, the Taichi claims to support " Purity Sound™ 4" while the Fatal1ty instead supports "Creative Sound Blaster™ Cinema 3". Whatever that means.

Ah cool, I don't have a use for a 10GbE port right now so the Taichi would be fine. That and the 1900X is looking really tempting!

it means that if you have the disposable income to buy a £300 motherboard and are torn between them based on the soundcard you have your priorities wrong. buy a usb soundcard at the very least

But yes, testing a 16 core CPU paired with suboptimal RAM on gaming workloads isn't much more than a curiosity; we're balls deep in diminishing returns, or indeed regression.

Meh, I am getting a ThreadRipper anyway. Those gaming benchmarks are dumb as hell and don't really tell you anything. ( 4K WTF? )

Right now I am running a W3690 so the upgrade will be significant anyway, and that is not even regarding the core count.

The Mac Pro I have is running SATA2, has no USB 3 and hobbles the bios when you run Windows. All in all the upgrade to NVMe, USB 3.1, faster RAM and a normal bios will make it worth it I guess.

It is pretty weird that so few bother to do more extensive testing with different components. Like AMD or not, there are clearly some different results depending on game, graphics card, and even RAM.

If you watch the LTT video, they mention they couldn't do a full set of tests yet. It's a review of the Alienware, not a full teardown of the entire platform.

That would delay the reviews greatly. People tend to underestimate how long it takes to just do the benchmarks for a review but it can take a week or more of nothing but running benchmarks to get a reasonably accurate picture of how each tested configuration performs, especially with some of the benchmarks having dumb quirks like results getting worse with each consecutive run without a reboot and other fun stuff that adds a lot of extra time to the testing.

Since I know you post in the Mac thread, there, I fixed that for you. Yeah, Threadripper might not be the best option (yet) for gaming, but it falls into that same category as a lot of other hardware that people spend far more than they need to for the intended purposes. Look at Apple's accounting books and all that money that could be going to leftist parties!!!

tim cook seems to be pitching the defining aspect of his tenure at apple to be the tax-free repatriation of apple's loving medieval hoard of overseas profits to be paid as dividends rather than to clothe, feed and educate the destitute in his country. gently caress him. would literally be a better use of money to use that poo poo to build the border wall, at least it might create some jobs

anyway a mac is a demonstrably nicer experience than competitors for general usage and productivity rather than being measurably worse so i don't understand your analogy

The "analogy" was really just to point out how ridiculous your statement was, but if you meant it 100% as a joke, cool.

Threadripper is not "measurably" worse any more than Macs are "demonstrably better" at general usage. Once Safari/Firefox/etc. is open and Joe Casual is reading Facebook or once Excel or Word is open, he will literally not be able to see any demonstratable difference between a $1000 Lenovo (with superior specs) or a $1800 rMBP besides that his porn might look a little better on the Retina display. Guess he should have donated that $800 to a leftist party!

Yeah, even with integrated memory controllers there's usually some kind of hook required in the chipset to make it work - at least with Intel. I've put a Xeon L5520 in an X58 board and an X3440 in a P55 board and in both cases, the processor supports ECC but there's just no way to enable it even with the right DIMMs inserted.

I feel like with Ryzen there were some consumer boards (from ASUS, at least?) which had the ability to run in ECC mode, but I don't know how common a feature it is. AMD's official position is that the feature hasn't gone through full validation testing like it would on server chips but as far as they're aware there shouldn't be any problems with a board that supports it.
