I like the Korok seeds not because I felt compelled to get all of them, but because I did not. :o:

I guess games really are spaces to express one's values because after my fiftieth encampment I thought to myself, "What am I getting out of going there when I don't like fighting, and at best I will replace some of the weapons I have with equal to or worse weapons." The same thing with the Korok seeds, people who bash collectibles in other games drool over these and want to collect all one thousand or whatever and maybe I'm just jaded and cynical because when I read that the designers used the Hero's Path tool to see where people weren't going and placed the Korok seeds there, I was like, "Oh, they're doing that to fill the map just like other open world games do, and the reason to collect the seeds besides the fleeting pleasure of solving a one-step puzzle is to increase my inventory slots which only matters because the inventory is at a feel-bad low cap and the inventory slots only really matter because of the feel-bad durability system and aren't I trying to avoid interacting with the feel-bad melee combat anyway"

I'll say this one last thing, because I'm not wild about the game and think it's pretty good not GOTY, but it ticks all my boxes because it's a game that gives out what you put in and the designers step back enough to give you room to breath. A lot of developers don't trust the player enough to walk a straight line without telling you what's going on but BotW has a pretty hands-off tutorial section then boots you out. The korok seeds are a lovely diversion as they're deliberate enough to be noticeable when you know what to look out for. Compare this to Batman where the Riddler trophies and puzzles are keyed to a color and you collect things to reveal a thing to reveal more trophies. Having a bigger inventory is nice but when every enemy drops a weapon and I've got melee and arrows, I don't need an armory to handle any challenge. That's all optional stuff I can put time into or not.

BotW also made me reevaluate Zelda 2, a game I used to think was poorly designed and arbitrarily hard but now come away that where it lacks in Zelda 1's exploration it more than makes up for that with combat-as-a-puzzle.

It's strange, I think the Souls games should be my favorite series of all time but I've fallen off of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls three or four times.

Yeah who is saying you HAVE to get all the korok seeds, I've heard far more praise for them being so plentiful that you can easily get enough of them for what you need without getting every last one.

I think one of the most common gaps in thinking between devs and the segment of players that post on forums is that a lot of games aren't designed with 100% completion in mind

I wanna say that was for a booth advertising the show so the costume was probably made by the cosplayer but the prop she's sitting on was probably constructed by others.

Regardless, they're both well done. I wish I had the money and space to do cosplay stuff because there are a lot of outfits I'd want to work on that'd require the same kinda knowledge the people that made that would have for propmaking or working with whatever kinda material she's wearing.

e: also, because odette was posted earlier, check this vid out

It's pretty amazing what she ended up doing with it even if it's obviously going to be pretty uncomfortable to move around in, possibly moreso than most costumes

So I just played Hellblade on steam for a couple of hours. It's "interesting", by that I mean it's all story and no gameplay*.

*Okay there is some combat and puzzle gameplay...but you're really not missing much.

Initial reviews make me excited about Hellblade and it sounds like self-publishing paid off for NT but I hear there's a totally broken unbeatable part in the review build so I'm going to wait and see if it's fixed soon. Then again I can't tell if it's an actual bug or a "couldn't beat the fishing in Nier" type of lapse in thought from the reviewer's part

Actually you have a limited number of deaths in Hellblade, if you die too many times you lose all your progress and start over. So if you get to a boss fight, you better know what the hell you're doing or you'll have to waste a couple hours just to try that section again.

Imagine if Dark Souls had permadeath, as if it wasn't already frustrating enough.

That was just the meme around the game. The ARG involved things like watching soup reviews and meeting up with Jim Crawford, the game's creator, and witnessing him getting arrested by time police for the proliferation of bug porn, or something like that. Then the part near the end that actually involved other indie games was mostly related to launching the actual patch that put the "frog fractions" part of the game into the game that was released, since it originally showed up on steam with no fanfare and none of the actual wacky content. You can read/listen to Jim about the ARG and the game in general on either Polygon or Giant Bomb, as well as a couple other outlets.

The lady who is cosplaying posted a step by step of a bunch of parts of the process of making the rachnea costume and body/legs, it's a pretty impressive assembly. Basically just a big chair that she sits in, and her actual legs act as the pedipalps, which is a clever design decision. Also, they hired her because she's got the proper gigantic boobs to pull off rachnea. :v:
