I actually owned a Pinto at one time so I'm pretty sure the problem was bad considering how lovely the car was overall.

I'm sure I read it on these forums once, but apparently part of the problem stemmed with aftermarket equipment install. A bunch of the cop gear was put in with self tapping screws and the ends poked out through the body. This would puncture the gas tank in a serious accident. I don't have any sources, but it's always sounded plausible.

Applebees Appetizer posted:I actually owned a Pinto at one time so I'm pretty sure the problem was bad considering how lovely the car was overall. It actually wasn't any worse than any other compact car of the time. It met the standards at that time, according to Wikipedia, but someone or several someones got a hardon for taking down Ford. The safety recall was based on a test that wasn't required when they were built. It's a small unibody car with the gas tank at the extreme rear of the vehicle. It's going to leak in a hard rear collision. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Pinto#Fuel_system_fires.2C_recalls.2C_and_litigation Cindy Shitbird posted:I want to see one of those horrible conversions, except slammed or hellaflush ... with a growling old-school V8 under/sticking through the hood. gently caress. Again, it met the standards - it's just as a previous poster mentioned: Crown Vics spent a lot of time on the shoulder where they could be rear-ended at speed. Apparently, the new problem with Ford cop Explorers is that the officers are getting CO2 poisoning while parked and idling. Again because of poorly installed aftermarket equipment, but of course it's Ford's fault. I've heard that third hand, so verify - I don't have the time just now.

That was actually a low point at ford and we found out later they actually were cheating the roof crush test a couple years after this. Assuming it was mostly the same people in charge its hard not to wonder if they knew and didnt care. At the same time porsches still had a fuel tank sitting above your legs this whole time and ive never heard of them catching poo poo for it. I mean honestly theres not a whole lot of good places to put one. Kinda nature of the beast thing.

I owned a pinto for a couple years, even posted pics here a couple times. From what I've read the problem was bolts puncturing the gas tank and the tank neck snapping off. The safety record for those cars is average for the 70s. Keep in mind if it was really as bad a car as everyone say they wouldn't have continued making them til 1980. That said, the car is slow as poo poo and boring. I have no idea why I wanted one.

They were bad enough that the 1st gen Escort was an improvement. All NA made 70s compact cars were abysmal. Speaking of abysmal cars https://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/vancouver/rare-1983-fuego-turbo/1247095153?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true quote:This car that has been sitting in a garage for over 10 years. It was my mother's car when she was alive, so it literally was driven by a little old lady. The car is still in a garage just outside of Edmonton, AB and is in good condition. No rust. Motor was replaced in late 1980s. Car is loaded. 1600 cc, turbo engine, 5 speed manual transmission, fold away sun roof. It is covered in 10 years of dust. It will need a new battery and because it has been sitting for so long, oil should be poured into the motor through the spark plug holes to be sure that it does not seize when it starts. I honestly can't remember the last time I saw one of these. 20 years? Generic photo from net, no photo in ad

Easier to sue a domestic manufacturer than a foreign one probably. The Corvair got poo poo for having swing arms in the rear but that's the same setup the Beetle and the 356 used.
