I forgot to mention that it's a security desk PC. You'd think the fact that Windows isn't able to install security updates would be enough to convince them, considering all the times the night shift managed to get malware on that machine.

And this is 100% opposite of what I'd say. We're getting another 2-3 years of life out of systems simply by replacing lovely old spinners with 1/2 decent SSD's - all 256 gb (or more for some power users), but at the cheap price, its a huge upgrade. Everyone loves them.

Luckily Dell has started making 256 the minimum in their newer models, at least for their business lines.

Yeah if you can only barely fit Windows + regular software packages in 128 GB you need to put in a bigger system disk. But otherwise you could also get away with putting a spinning disk (maybe even a USB thing) in for the data/video storage.

Also by not putting SSD's in a regular office-use PC you're probably wasting 15-30 minutes every work day just waiting for disk access. Ask your management to calculate the ROI on that.

Totally agree. They'll be happier using them, lovely bloated apps like office will load much quicker, etc. I'd rather have a slower system with an SSD (over a hybrid, even) then a faster one with a spinner for office work.

It's basically enterprise'ing m.2 drives. It makes sense, the 2.5" drives are just that size/shape due to the legacy of having to stick a spinning disc in there. And m.2s being all bare components is not the best for hot swappin.

It will be interesting to see if it catches on though or if everyone just flips Intel the bird.

I shoulda read more when it said there was a working group with most of the big players already on board. I was thinking if it was an Intel proprietary form factor guys like samsung would be not too keen..

This is a good looking setup overall!

The office laptops at my last job would take an eternity to boot with spinners due to all the crap the IT department had them loaded down with, going to SSDs probably cut like a full minute or more off of boot times, a larger difference than I saw when transitioning from spinner to SSD on my home PC.

Companies were announcing Quad level chips at the event before it lit on fire. Hella storage capacity with that, read speed is still pretty ok, but you can only erase it 100 times.

Evidently it's gonna be made in specialist hardware at first for people like facebook and google, but I could see a future multi-TB consumer SSD with 3 levels of flash, just like the Evo's 2 now. Put all the stuff that rarely changes into the QLC zone, it should work fine as a replacement for the media storage drives people have now.

Sounds like a measured approach to a new form factor. Normally these standards inch along at a slow pace, hopefully this one was shared far enough in advance that it's squared away and there's a level playing field. Hate for this to start on the wrong foot.

She's also vehemently against macs which would simplify this.

Yeah that post had me scratching my head too.

For the vast majority of office users an SSD is the single best thing you can do - for ‘normal’ office stuff there is bugger all difference between a Core2 Duo and and a quad core i7 but there is a huge difference between a mechanical disk and SSD.

Also 128GB is ample if you use a SharePoint or whatever for documents and the PC isn’t shared between too many users.

In our case, bunging an SSD in Ivy Bridge HP/Dell SFFs that were approaching 4 years old gave excellent performance, and let us push back replacing 50% of the fleet for another two years at least.

User experience is vastly improved too.

Seriously, an office can get by on a fleet of i3 machines as long as you have a decent amount of RAM and an SSD in them. I'd rather use that than an i7 with a spinning disk in.

It'll have to have comparable latency and performance at low queue depth to be a true comparison.

That's not to say it won't be a better option for most users and as fast or faster in other areas

Between the Sandisk II and the 850 EVO, what should I probably go with? 500gb, they're both on sale on Amazon (150, 140 respectively.)
Also, is there any risk in continuing to use the 840 EVO heavily? I was thinking about using it for a Linux install.

Definitely go with the 850 EVO over the Sandisk, and so long as the most recent firmware is loaded on the 840 EVO you should be fine. Remember that the most recent firmware has to be loaded via the Performance Restoration Tool, not Samsung Magician.
