I love my pok3r PBTs and dont care much for the shine on ABS keys so I really want to get a set that usually only comes in ABS.

teethgrinder

Yeah I kind of blew it on that ... but I guess we'll see. Might not be so bad as doubleshot ABS? Here's hoping.

Was thinking if I were to get Godspeed it'd have to be for my forthcoming Race3 ... but screw trying to match caps to those nonstandard keys. Fortunately the caps it comes with look good.

That Race3 looks pretty sweet. I settled on a pok3r for work though as it needs to be as portable as possible. For home use I'm waiting for an ergodox.

Did pull the trigger on Godspeed and ordered GodX with it because, why not.

:siren: group buy - sa max ashen from maxkey - round 2 :siren:

- $78 for a fully sculpted sa keycap set, honeywell themed
- $16.80 shipping if you just buy just that, or free shipping if you grab $100 of stuff
- group closes sept. 5th, ships october-ish
- abs, but thick rear end doubleshot abs with a satisfying sound

round 2 changes a couple things:

quote:

The new and improved Maxkey Max Ashen is back by popular demand. With its classic and low-key gray color scheme accented by a dash of red, SA Max Ashen is reminiscent of the aftermath of a campfire, with some burning embers amidst a pile of gray and white ashes. Previous issues such as "Back space", “SHIF T”have been all resolved, "Delete" is now "DEL" and "Escape" now "ESC", for even better aesthetics.

check me out sperging about this set here: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3732284&pagenumber=93&perpage=40#post473197750

i can vouch for both the production quality of this set and zfrontier, and i've been quite happy with my purchase. this is a legit good purchase if you've been lusting after crisp, luxurious doubleshot sa keycaps, at a more reasonable price than the sp stuff on massdrop. the ~6 week turn around is also quite nice.

get on this, nerds

I really like how all the vendors have pushed Maxkey to fix their SA legends. Another upcoming Maxkey SA keycap is Maxkey Lime and I'm definitely getting that and probably going to build a keyboard with a wooden case for it. That particular one will have text instead of the fat arrows for the arrow keys also.

K95 with Cherry RGBs for me, which means I also need "gaming" bottom row support as well. That's a really big gripe I have with the MK community, a lot of people are all about screwball layouts like 40% or Ergodox and often custom keysets will have optional packs to support those users, but somehow offering a wider spacebar and narrower Windows keys to support about a third of the mainstream mechanical keyboard market is too much. I can't explain that in any other way than snobbery.

It's because mainstream gaming keyboard owners generally don't buy keycaps so it doesn't make financial sense. The crazy screwball layouts kb folks do, a lot, like probably the majority of the market, so catering to their weird needs makes sense. This isn't snobbery, if anything it's taking advantage of addictive personalities.

I think that's more of a chicken and egg thing. Think of all the heavily customized gaming machines out there with custom painted cases, windows showing off their colored watercooling loops, and then an off the shelf RGB keyboard with the colors set to match the theme. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of gaming-market MK owners wouldn't even be aware that their caps are removable if the modern ones didn't tend to come with a replacement set for WASD.

The custom crowd on the other hand is very aware of third party caps because they basically have to be.

If there were more keysets available that were usable on these keyboards I think all it would take is one of the big name pro gamers or stream/youtube stars to get a set and the floodgates would open from people who had no idea that was an option. Backlight compatibility is really the big one to me, the bottom row can be dealt with well enough by mixing and matching. Who really cares about the legends on the Windows keys? Put whatever 1x keys you want in those spots.

You are limited to official sets made by topre meaning a black or white hhkb set or realforce sets which are solid one color (I've seen lime green, orange, red , yellow , blue and, lavender) and can go up into the hundreds of dollars due to their rarity.

Holy hell that's a nice keyboard. Really well done, drat. I like the layout, if you're going to make it from scratch makes sense to make something unique life that.

Also, was this was your first time building a keyboard? Did you already know how to wire it up and whatnot, or did you learn as you went along? That's all real impressive.

This was my first keyboard build. I knew the basics of wiring it up but I did some trial and error along the way as I noted in the log. There are other guides to building keyboards that do a good job and normally its pretty straight forward. All diodes in a row are soldered together in a single line, then the columns are put in and everything goes back to a pin.

The biggest pain is the firmware, since I have no idea how to parse the keymap that is made for this matrix so I can't easily identify how to change it. I'm working on though.

I took all the keys from a standard 60% and lined them up like a planck board. This had the effect of giving me those even angles for the keys on each side. Pretty much everything is in easy reach with little used things out of the way (my Fn key is far bottom left).

SymmetryrtemmyS posted:

I did use that, it's in my build log link. I meant actually reading the keymap for a 5x16 keyboard that is written in 8x8 is hard to follow.

while i don't agree with all of the design choices, the execution is pretty good and it's always a treat to see hand wired keebs.

i have to ask though, what's up with the f row? the way it's delineated with the darker keys creates a mid group of f6-f9, which is odd to me.

Black on numbers 5 and 0 as a quick visual reference. I'll probably change it since numbers on an ortho layout are pretty easy to nail down. I don't intend to keep these caps on here, but until the Miami dolce set starts to exist this is the best option I have.

So I read that Corsair discontinued the K70 RGB with blue switches. Are there choices like the K70 (raised switches/floating keys for easier cleaning, 100% keyboard, and customizable backlight) with blue switches out there? I don't really know the lesser known brands.

Baby, when it's love,
if it's not rough it isn't fun.
Every couple of weeks I get this urge to buy a new keyboard. I've been using a K70 with reds at home for like 2 years, and have to deal with one of the ultracheap Dell pack-ins at the office (or the mushy laptop keys when I'm not at my desk) and it's making me sad. I've got a K-Type coming, but that's at least 3 months out at this point, and I'm still trying to decide if I made a mistake on that one because I ordered it with Kailh Reds. The saving grace, in my mind, is that it's hotswappable, so I can buy a bunch of Cherry Blacks and throw them in instead, if I decide I want more force.

This isn't really a recommend me a board post, just kinda a frustration thing. I probably should suck it up and find a 75% or something in that area that meets my desires so I can stop dealing with all the mush at work.

Edit: Maybe just a POK3R. I keep eyeing it and the ANNE Pro, but I dislike the lack of a dedicated function row and arrow keys, and I think the lack of an aluminum case on the ANNE would be offputting. I could get over the layout with time, I guess, and it'd make it a lot more portable for work purposes.

I wouldn't worry about switches at all. They're like $0.30 a switch so it's not like you threw money away or something. As for Kailh, their new switches are definitely the best switches in the market right now. (Box, Speed and Pro series) Their previous switches were pretty lacklustre, but they've retooled them recently, so who knows, you might get the retooled originals. Granted, reds are pretty meh in general across all manufacturers, but you can always replace switches.

As for a new keyboard, you can try a 75%. It's 60% with a function row and arrow keys. Almost has as many keys as a TKL. The only issue with this is, the better choices out there are mostly custom keyboards like the KBD75. Also, $$$. There's the Vortex Race 3, but the non-standard Esc and Del key can be a pain in the rear end if you ever want to replace the keycaps.

I'm not TOO worried, I just kinda wish I had opted for a tactile or something because I know if I stick with linear I'm going to want something heavier. Would have just been an opportunity to try something different as a daily driver.

More or less my exact thought process here. A 75% would still scratch the itch of having something portable and give me the majority of the buttons I really want, though I'm sure I could get used to a 60% given time.

We've got a lot of people around my office that use mechanicals (most kind enough to stick with non-clicky varieties, other than one of the guys in my pod who uses blues), and one of our UI guys gave me a strong recommendation for a Pok3r a couple weeks ago, which is what made me give it more serious thought. I already know I prefer the feel of mechanical, it's just the balancing act of finding the one I want. If nothing else, getting the Pok3r and setting up the layers the way I want them would be a good opportunity to preplan for my K-Type.
