Been having a real good time playing Custom Blaster recently. Especially on Tower Control.

It's got decent range, and 1 to 2 shots most of the time. Like any blaster, it can kill people behind cover. The autobomb is an excellent defensive weapon, and between the normal fire and the autobomb, it's really easy to clear people off the tower safely. It's really hard to push through an autobomb stall solo on towers without numbers. You WILL have to move and reink, and by then, another bomb will be on. As long as a I have a perch, I'm right as rain. The inkjet's the opposite, and I can use it long range to make offense happen. It's range and damage, combined with the autobomb's ability to push entrenched positions is super fun. It's also pretty decent at defense and at regaining territory and defensively inking from safety.

Tenta Missiles are a goddamn riot on Port Mackerel, you don't have to backtrack that far to get the whole enemy team in your sights, and you can usually scoot back forward and pressure at least one of them when they're coming down.

Naw, I wouldn't do that. Anyway! Here are way too many words about the Squiffer:

Like other chargers, knowing your best spots on each map is really important, but because the Squiffer has shorter range, the spots that other chargers can work from won't work. Instead, go for these:

-Literally any long corridor or choke point, but watch out for Squelchers and Rapid Blasters;
-Areas with wide-open flat ground, like the two courts in Port and the central courtyard in Academy. When defending yourself from attack, take advantage of your quick charge speed and funnel the attacker into one path. If they try to swim through it to get closer, you'll know exactly where they are and exactly where to shoot. Good players won't fall for this, but most players aren't good.

The Squiffer is very strong on flat ground, and it's okay on higher ground but it can't take advantage of that as much as longer-ranged chargers. Because of the Squiffer's shorter range, you'll have to move through lower ground a lot, and this is where the Squiffer is weakest. You're essentially blind to any enemy coming at you from higher ground, and you lack any means of attacking them while they can rain shots down on you from above. It's a geometry problem. Especially dangerous areas for you include:

-At the bottom of any central hill, like in Shipyard or Musselforge;
-Defending against the side paths leading onto the central zone in Mainstage;
-At the foot of any ledge, like those that lead up to Mainstage or surround the courtyard in Academy.

You can mitigate a lot of the risk by keeping these areas at your maximum range, but sometimes that isn't an option. Thankfully, you have a tool for just these situations! If you think an attack is coming from a place like these, toss out a Point Sensor. If anyone decides to hop down and come after you (and they will), you'll see them coming, and you can be ready for them. The Point Sensor is also great for blind corners and big chunks of enemy ink. Use it liberally, because you can still squeeze a few shots out after using it.

The Squiffer is actually pretty adept at laying down ink. Take advantage of that by stacking a bunch of Special Charge Up abilities and enjoy having four or five Ink Armors per match.

Finally, practice your snap shots! The majority of your splats are going to come from those. You can practice them by going into the test room, getting in the middle of all the dummies, and getting used to making those quick snaps between random targets while incorporating as much movement as you can keep up with.

Special up power on tentas only increases the targeting reticle, making it easier to hit more people. In practice it doesn't make much of a difference because you're either getting it off fast in combat against 1-2 people for a quick reload/harass/to not lose points or going back to spawn and lining up an easy 4.

It doesn't even make the impact spots larger? Lame. It seems pretty worthless in inkjet too, I swear I hit motherfuckers right in their face multiple times with that thing sometimes and they just shrug it right off.

Only one that seems useful is the splashdown to make the impact zone bigger, and even then somehow it can be blocked by brellas which is high grade bullshit.

I'm just gonna say that one of the best abilities in the game is Bomb Defense Up. That ability can make the difference between life and death in a lot of situations. Bombs get thrown around a lot in ranked, and being able to shave off some splash damage, or a direct bean from a Burst Bomb can really help your survivability.

raditts posted:

Isn't there a point of diminishing returns with the number of abilities you have? Would it increase your killin' potential if you had Special Power Up on one of those?

There's a reason I said it was a dumb build! :v: Also it stopped working all that well once I got to S+. The skill jump from S to S+ is pretty huge, and I had better things to be doing there than spamming missiles all day.

Special Power Up doesn't increase damage. It just either increases the duration of the special (It's not that helpful for Inkjet, it just increases the duration slightly, but 1 main isn't enough to get one last shot in.) or increases the radius of the effect. Or in the Baller's case, it increases the Baller's HP.

Actually, what I just said last post is incredibly bad and wrong! According to this page https://splatoonwiki.org/wiki/Special_Power_Up you can get more than two extra seconds of Ink Armor with three Special Power Up mains.

That's still a heavy commitment, but it could be worth it. I'm still gonna run with Tenacity and Special Charge Up, though.

It's good, but if it were 1 extra hit, it would be amazing. Extra seconds don't mean anything if you don't get hit, and an extra second won't save you against a heavy splatling or what have you.
