It actually says he's facing prison for "wielding" or "possessing" the stick, which seems...odd. Not the sort of thing I'd think would be illegal in itself. Maybe it's specifically because of his prior conviction.

There�s a maximum sentence of one year in county jail, which is normally as low as felonies go. Unless, you know, you have a prior felony conviction for armed robbery.

Nope, the California code linked earlier looks pretty broad, but the key is that it wasn't a pipe at all, it was a stick weighted with lead.
