If for some reason they ever really needed an Episode 3/HL3 announcement (Not the game, just the actual announcement. I dunno like if they ever really get into some deep poo poo PR wise and need a surefire fix) they'd show up as a part of some conference with a twenty-second trailer that's just the lambda symbol followed by the number 3. Tacky yes, but just like the Metroid Prime 4 announcement tease it would be enough to drive the entire internet into a frenzy. Details are unimportant in this moment, the impossible has been made possible. Ten to fifteen minutes later after that we'd find out that it would be "Made by the fans, for the fans" and various teams could be funded through Kickstarter and/or Patreon. That solves the problem of pretty much none of the original creatives still around at Valve to help make it themselves anymore. Valve will let teams put up every build for sale on Steam and everyone will be happy.

Actually I think that they didn't realise the damage Half Life 2 would cause and DOTA2 was the intentional one. There would totally be a bad Portal 3 by now if the Portal 2 hats weren't such a dud.

I wonder if that cliffhanger was meant to imply the next game proper would have starred Alyx and this was going to be their way of "Retiring" Gordon. At least it ends better than how Episode 2 does.

Half-Life 2 isn't even the worst game of that era in terms of the influence it had on FPS design, seeing as Halo: Combat Evolved came out in 2001.
